Book Synopsis Implementing Sustainable Development by : William M. Lafferty
Download or read book Implementing Sustainable Development written by William M. Lafferty and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-11-30 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, political leaders from more than a hundred countries made a formal commitment to intensify efforts to resolve global environment and development problems and to strive for sustainable development. This volume examines how governments in the developed industrial world have responded to the challenge of sustainable development since it was catapulted into the international stage. It focuses on the central government engagement with sustainable development in Australia, Canada, Japan, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union. The study shows that sustainable development has been integrated into governmental idiom in most jurisdictions and has come to be associated with a series of changes to the structures and approached deployed to manage environmental problems. Yet, it also reveals significant differences of interpretation and priority, and in enthusiasm with which sustainable development has been received.

Book Synopsis Economics of Climate Change Mitigation in Central and West Asia by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Economics of Climate Change Mitigation in Central and West Asia written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological complexity and diverse ecosystems give Central and West Asia rich natural resources and hydrocarbon reserves. Countries in this region are exposed to climate change risks, and there is growing recognition that their carbon-intensive economies necessitate greenhouse gas mitigation. This report assesses the costs, benefits, and investment opportunities for greenhouse gas reduction in the energy and transport sectors of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, and discusses indirect benefits of such reduction to human health and energy security. It gives policymakers, practitioners, and academics an overview of policy measures and technologies available for emission reduction, as well as scenarios of future emission trajectories in the three countries.
Book Synopsis Climate Change in the South Pacific: Impacts and Responses in Australia, New Zealand, and Small Island States by : Alexander Gillespie
Download or read book Climate Change in the South Pacific: Impacts and Responses in Australia, New Zealand, and Small Island States written by Alexander Gillespie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALEXANDER GILLESPIE & WILLIAM C.G. BURNS The idea for this book grew out of the Ecopolitics conference in Canberra, Australia in 1996. The conference captured the ferment of the climate change debate in the South Pacific, as well as some its potential implications for the region’s inhabitants and e- systems. At that conference, one of the editors (Gillespie) delivered a paper on climate change issues in the region, as did Ros Taplin and Mark Diesendorf, who are also c- tributors to this volume. This book focuses on climate change issues in Australia, New Zealand, and the small island nations in the Pacific as the world struggles to cope with possible the impacts of environmental change and to formulate effective responses. While Australia and New Zealand’s per capita emissions of greenhouse gases are among the highest in the world, their aggregate contributions are small. However, both nations may exert a disprop- tionate influence in the global greenhouse debate because their obstinate positions at recent conferences of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on C- mate Change (FCCC) may provide justification for other developed nations, as well as developing countries, to refuse to make meaningful reductions in their greenhouse gas emissions.
