Book excerpt: Now that the Bush Administration has kiboshed the Kyoto Protocol, are efforts to curtail global warming dead? Are even more technical studies called for? The issue of global warming would appear to be one which will force pollution control even before the public will need to walk around with gas masks as part of their daily attire. Such controls, however, will require a gutsy administration in Washington which may not surface in the short run. This new book brings presents the issues of global climate change in a crystal clear manner leaving no doubt that a crisis is enveloping the world.

Book excerpt: Climate, climate change, climate fluctuations and climatic trends are only a few of the terms used today, in not only conferences, scientific symposia and workshops, but also parliaments and in discussions throughout society. climatologists these terms may be well known; to the vast majority of people, however, they are new, and they require definition and explanation. The World Meteorological Organization inherited an interest and involvement in the studies of climate and climate change from its predecessor, the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), which was established in 1873. By 1929 the had set up a Commission for Climatology to deal with matters related to climate studies. When, in 1950, the World Meteorological Organization assumed the mantle of the it retained the commission which, among other responsibilities, had already recognized the need for the definition and explanation of terms used in climatology. It must also be said that much of what we now know about climate derives from the scientific and technical programmes - ordinated by and now, to a much greater extent, by In 1979, the First World Climate Conference made an assessment of the status of knowledge of climate and climate variability, and recommended the establishment of a World Climate Programme.

While environmental and atmospheric conditions in large part determine the climate of a region, the impact of human activity has increasingly become a significant factor as well. This is especially true concerning significant climate changes, commonly known as global warming. New technologies and an ever-expanding population have contributed to worldwide climate shifts in ways that are harmful to the planet. The factors affecting climate, the various climate classification systems, and international responses to global warming are all carefully considered in this volume.

Book excerpt: The recurring community and environmental impacts of climate extremes, such as the global pattern associated with the El Niño phenomenon, can bring hardship and set back development. It is no accident that those countries that recognise the importance of planning for climate extremes, adequately engineer public infrastructures, and implement appropriate community response strategies are better adapted. When we take a long view, from many decades to centuries, it is important to understand that there are natural fluctuations in climate system. The warming trend of the recent century is not unus.

Book excerpt: It is the greatest environmental challenge of the 21st Century. But what do we truly know about global climate change? And what can we do about it? Most of the world's top scientists agree that emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from human activities such as industrial processes, fossil fuel combustion, and land-use changes are causing the earth to get warmer. Impacts of this warming may include damage to our coastal areas, accelerated rates of species loss, altered agricultural patterns, and increased incidences of infectious diseases. The effects of climate change - and efforts to mitigate climate change - could also have substantial economic ramifications. The book presents the latest research and analysis from prominent scientists, economists, academics, and policy-makers, including: "Tom Wigley" and "Joel Smith," who, along with other authors of the Science and Impacts chapter, explain the basic science of climate change, the growing evidence that human activities are changing our climate, and the impacts of these changes; "Eileen Claussen," "John Gummer," "Henry Lee," and other authors of the Global Strategies chapter, who describe what nations are or are not doing to address climate change, and the state of international climate talks; "Robert Stavins," "John Weyant," "Ev Ehrlich," and other economists, who explain why economic analyses of climate policy are conducted, why the projected costs of addressing climate change vary so widely among economic models, and how changes driven by today's economy can influence climate policy; "Gov. Jean Shaheen" and other authors of the Innovative Solutions chapter, who describe what state and local governments in theUnited States and multinational companies are doing to monitor and curb greenhouse gas emissions; and "Forest Reinhardt," who offers business leaders advice on steering their companies on a path that is healthy for business as well as the global climate. Book excerpt: This book introduces climate change fundamentals and essential concepts that reveal the extent of the damage, the impacts felt around the globe, and the innovation and leadership it will take to bring an end to the status quo. Emphasizing peer-reviewed literature, this text details the impact of climate change on land and sea, the water cycle, human communities, the weather, and humanity’s collective future. Coverage of greenhouse gases, oceanic and atmospheric processes, Pleistocene and Holocene paleoclimate, sea levels, and other fundamental topics provide a deep understanding of key mechanisms, while discussion of extreme weather, economic impacts, and resource scarcity reveals how climate change is already impacting people’s lives—and will continue to do so at an increasing rate for the foreseeable future.

Book excerpt: Scientific evidence clearly shows that temperatures and the level of CO2 in the atmosphere have risen dramatically since the end of the nineteenth century, coinciding with the rise of industrialization. But what can be done to slow the effects of climate change on humans, plants and animals, and natural resources? This book explains the consequences of further climate change, from flooding of coastal areas to unhealthy pollution in urban areas, and how governments, businesses, and citizens can proactively work on limiting their use of greenhouse gases. International accords such as the Paris agreement of 2015 and the Kyoto Protocol of 1992 are also discussed.

Book excerpt: World leaders, environmentalists and the international science community agree that climate change is one of the largest and most intractable problems now confronting us all. Despite this, it still remains a bewildering subject. The Impact of Climate Change tries to answer our urgent questions: 1 What is climate change? 2 How will it affect us? 3 What can we do to stop it? The book is divided into five chapters; which look at why our climate is changing; how the world works; how we pedict the outcomes of climate change; how we live with change; and how we make a difference. It looks at environmental, cultural and technological changes likely to occur in the 21st century and beyond. It takes scientific findings and demystifies them; it illuminates our planet's greatest threat in a dynamic and entertaining manner without being dogmatic or judgmental. The Impact of Climate Change empowers the reader by providing information on solutions and opportunities to reduce the impact of climate change.
