Book Synopsis Animating Film Theory by : Karen Redrobe
Download or read book Animating Film Theory written by Karen Redrobe and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animating Film Theory provides an enriched understanding of the relationship between two of the most unwieldy and unstable organizing concepts in cinema and media studies: animation and film theory. For the most part, animation has been excluded from the purview of film theory. The contributors to this collection consider the reasons for this marginalization while also bringing attention to key historical contributions across a wide range of animation practices, geographic and linguistic terrains, and historical periods. They delve deep into questions of how animation might best be understood, as well as how it relates to concepts such as the still, the moving image, the frame, animism, and utopia. The contributors take on the kinds of theoretical questions that have remained underexplored because, as Karen Beckman argues, scholars of cinema and media studies have allowed themselves to be constrained by too narrow a sense of what cinema is. This collection reanimates and expands film studies by taking the concept of animation seriously. Contributors. Karen Beckman, Suzanne Buchan, Scott Bukatman, Alan Cholodenko, Yuriko Furuhata, Alexander R. Galloway, Oliver Gaycken, Bishnupriya Ghosh, Tom Gunning, Andrew R. Johnston, Hervé Joubert-Laurencin, Gertrud Koch, Thomas LaMarre, Christopher P. Lehman, Esther Leslie, John MacKay, Mihaela Mihailova, Marc Steinberg, Tess Takahashi

Download or read book The Red Robe written by A. Marie Kaluza and published by Booktango. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of 30 poems written between 2012-15, A. Marie Kaluza crystallizes the union of family, romance, and the inner world, challenging the perception of these things as separate pursuits and intertwines them in rhythmic prose and free verse. Full of slant rhyme and harmonic, Kaluza creates a world of wonder in the everyday, often veering into dark passages of self-meaning and internal discovery, and the uncertainty of desire. A rich collection, The Red Robe brings depth and feather-like feeling, while resting comfortably in the ambiguous arms of poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were a score round us when the fool, little knowing the man with whom he had to deal, and as little how to lose like a gentleman, flung the words in my teeth. He thought, I'll be sworn, that I should storm and swear and ruffle it like any common cock of the hackle. But that was never Gil de Berault's way. For a few seconds after he had spoken I did not even look at him. I passed my eye instead - smiling, Bien Entendu - round the ring of waiting faces, saw that there was no one except De Pombal I had cause to fear; and then at last I rose and looked at the fool with the grim face I have known impose on older and wiser men. 'Marked cards, M. l'Anglais?' I said, with a chilling sneer. 'They are used, I am told, to trap players - not unbirched schoolboys.'

Download or read book Pratt Of The Argus written by David Nobbs and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Pratt, back home from National Service, is a man at last. As eager to prove it as he is to please, he is in at the deep end in his chosen profession - cub reporter on the Thurmarsh Evening Argus. As trams and typewriters chatter to the echoes of Suez and Hungary, Henry finds himself in an exciting if bewildering world. His first scoop about a stolen colander is not quite as straightforward as he hopes. Misprints and chuckles abound as ever-hopeful Henry manages to fall foul both of typesetters and attractive women. And, in a profession not noted for kindness to the diffident, he is as prone to accident as practical jokes. Nothing ever goes quite right for Henry. So when the scoop of a lifetime finally comes his way it threatens to upset the family and complicate further his ever-hopeful love life.
Download or read book Deep Mediations written by Karen Redrobe and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preoccupation with “depth” and its relevance to cinema and media studies For decades the concept of depth has been central to critical thinking in numerous humanities-based disciplines, legitimizing certain modes of inquiry over others. Deep Mediations examines why and how this is, as scholars today navigate the legacy of depth models of thought and vision, particularly in light of the “surface turn” and as these models impinge on the realms of cinema and media studies. The collection’s eighteen essays seek to understand the decisive but evolving fixation on depth by considering the term’s use across a range of conversations as well as its status in relation to critical methodologies and the current mediascape. Engaging contemporary debates about new computing technologies, the environment, history, identity, affect, audio/visual culture, and the limits and politics of human perception, Deep Mediations is a timely interrogation of depth’s ongoing importance within the humanities.
