Book excerpt: Recruiting Employees describes what is currently known and what remains to be learned about the processes by which organizations recruit new members. In this volume, Alison E. Barber delineates three separate stages of recruitment generating applications, maintaining applicant status, and influencing job choice and discusses existing knowledge and important unanswered questions relevant to each of these stages. She also addresses the question of whether and how recruitment influences organizational outcomes. Traditional recruitment topics such as recruitment source effects and reactions to initial interviews are covered in detail. Alternative frameworks and different research, requiring different theoretical frameworks and different research methods, are also proposed. Researchers, scholars, and students interested in studying or contributing to the research literature on recruitment will find this a valuable resource.

The research described herein considers the potential supply and demand for SOM skills and staffing; the actions transportation agencies may take to attract, recruit, develop, and retain skilled staff with SOM capabilities; and the tools that are available or may be developed to assist agencies in attracting and recruiting skilled staff in this area. SOM draws on the knowledge of many disciplines including, for example, traffic engineering, intelligent transportation systems, maintenance, emergency response, traffic operations, traffic safety, incident management, performance measurement, and system planning applied in a comprehensive approach to increase the efficiency and safety of the transportation system. SOM encompasses interactions among transportation modes and between the transportation system and other functions such as emergency management, public safety, and outreach. In this report, we provide information regarding the methodology, results, recommended action plans, and potential future research directions in relation to this project.

Book excerpt: A priceless resource for seasoned as well as first-time executives, this is the playbook that explains how to recruit better people and build stronger, more effective teams. Executives are highly motivated to get better at hiring because they know the ability to consistently identify and recruit the right people is critical to the success of their businesses—and their personal advancement. But hiring people isn't taught in business schools or executive development programs. This book provides the sorely needed and essential practical instruction that executives are not receiving elsewhere, supplying a step-by-step guide for those who want to excel at attracting and identifying talent. Covering everything from the basics of defining a job to the intricacies of managing internal politics, this no-nonsense book provides a clear roadmap through the often-daunting and pitfall-laden recruiting process. In addition to explaining how to get it right, the book provides the information and guidance readers need to identify and fix the most common problems that doom hiring efforts to failure. Debunking the idea that "some people are just great recruiters and some aren't," the author clearly identifies the steps that anyone can take in order to master the art—and science—of recruiting.
