Book Synopsis Living on an Active Earth by : National Research Council
Download or read book Living on an Active Earth written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-09-22 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The destructive force of earthquakes has stimulated human inquiry since ancient times, yet the scientific study of earthquakes is a surprisingly recent endeavor. Instrumental recordings of earthquakes were not made until the second half of the 19th century, and the primary mechanism for generating seismic waves was not identified until the beginning of the 20th century. From this recent start, a range of laboratory, field, and theoretical investigations have developed into a vigorous new discipline: the science of earthquakes. As a basic science, it provides a comprehensive understanding of earthquake behavior and related phenomena in the Earth and other terrestrial planets. As an applied science, it provides a knowledge base of great practical value for a global society whose infrastructure is built on the Earth's active crust. This book describes the growth and origins of earthquake science and identifies research and data collection efforts that will strengthen the scientific and social contributions of this exciting new discipline.
Book Synopsis New Approaches In Geomagnetism And The Earth's Rotation by : S Flodmark
Download or read book New Approaches In Geomagnetism And The Earth's Rotation written by S Flodmark and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991-01-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rotation of the Earth and its relation to geomagnetism are topics that have been under debate for more than a century. In this volume both of these phenomena are discussed in the light of new approaches. Keith Runcorn presents a survey of the papers and concluding remarks. F Richard Stephenson gives a thorough review of the history of the Earth's rotation whilst Stig Flodmark finds an explanation for the Chandler wobbles and the drift of the polar axis. A New Approach to Polar Motion by Losito et al. gives another view of the same theory. The fascinating idea of a single-crystal inner core is discussed by Flodmark and Weber and magnetic rigidity in the Earth is a new concept dealt with by Mörner. The mechanisms behind magnetic reversals, ice ages and earthquakes are other subjects under debate. It is hoped that the present volume will encourage forthcoming debates on these subjects.

Book Synopsis Recent Crustal Movements, 1977 by : C.A. Whitten
Download or read book Recent Crustal Movements, 1977 written by C.A. Whitten and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Crustal Movements, 1977 is a compilation of the proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Recent Crust Movements. This volume is comprised of 50 papers and 38 abstracts, in addition to a special report about the RCM Symposium and the report of the Fennoscandian Subcommission. This volume is subdivided into eight parts. The first part presents the opening remarks at the symposium and the special report of the Fennoscandian Subcommission of the Commission on Recent Crustal Movements. Locations included in this report are the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Part two is about crustal deformation using extra-terrestrial geodesy. Part three explores the measurement of strain, tilt and gravity. The observed vertical crustal deformation is the focus of the fourth part. The second half of this volume focuses on geologic studies of Holocene deformation; observed horizontal crustal deformation; seismology; and, finally, experimental and theoretical models of interferometric methods for the measurement of distance in the study of recent crustal movements.

This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the solar system is regarded as a moving mass point system, then both the planet m and the sun M move around the solar system mass center O. According to the motion law of the mass point system and the centripetal force formula of the curve, it can be determined through theoretical analysis and mathematical derivation: (1) Kepler's law of planetary motion contradicts the motion rules of mass point systems. (2) The universal gravitational force F between planet m and sun M. K is the new gravitational constant. The force F' on the object m in the inertial frame S'. In the formula, V' is the velocity of the object m in the inertial frame S', and u is the velocity of the inertial frame S' in the cosmic space reference frame. In addition, the author designed three new optical experiments based on the light interference theory to verify whether the principle of constant speed of light conforms to objective facts. Experiment 1. Using the new front and rear hole laser interferometer for verification; Experiment 2. Verification of using long and short optical path Michelson interferometers; Experiment 3. Verification of using a double-hole interferometer.

Book Synopsis Earth Rotation: Solved and Unsolved Problems by : Anny Cazenave
Download or read book Earth Rotation: Solved and Unsolved Problems written by Anny Cazenave and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for organl.zl.ng an Advanced Research Workshop entirely devoted to the Earth rotation was born in 1983 when Professor Raymond Hide suggested this topic to the special NATO panel of global transport mechanism in the Geosciences. Such a specialized meeting did not take place since the GEOP research conference on the rotation of the Earth and polar motion which was held at the Ohio State University (USA) in 1973. In the last ten years, highly precise measurements of the Earth's rotation parameters and new global geophysical data have become available allowing major advance to be made in the under standing of the various irregularities affecting the Earth's rotation. The aim of the workshop was to bring together scientists who have made important contributions in this field during the last decade both at the observational and geophysical interpretation levels. The confe rence was divided into four main topics. The first session was dedicated to the definition, implementation and maintenance of the terrestrial and celestial reference systems. A few critical points have been identified as requiring further improvements: (i) appro priate selection of terrestrial sites recognized for their long term stability, (ii) determination of the relationship between terrestrial and celestial references systems as well as between the various terrestrial ones, (iii) improvment of the theory of a rotating elastic earth (the recently adopted theory needs already some corrections').
