It will, however, be readily observed that to completely expurgate the foreign idioms would involve a greater number of changes than the limits of the present task permit. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Church History, Vol. 1 of 2 May be considered a probable fact, the episcopate of Peter a questionable explanation of his presence at Rome, and its twenty-five years' range a fable confuted by the Scripture history itself. The statement that the Apostles suffered in the fourteenth year of Nero need not clash with Tacitus' record of the attack on mm the Christians in his tenth year. A per scontion, at first prompted by Nero's desire to attach the stigma of the great fire to the already odious sect of Christians, may have begun in an. 64 and continued with intermissions till the emperors death in a.d. 68. The accounts represent Nero's victims as suffering fearful cruelties. They were crucified, cast to wild beasts in the arena, and even smeared with pitch and burnt as living torches to light the public gardens. It is uncertain whether the persecution extended beyond Rome. N 0 other is recorded till that of Domitian. Book Synopsis A Source Book for Ancient Church History by : Joseph Cullen Ayer
Download or read book A Source Book for Ancient Church History written by Joseph Cullen Ayer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Source Book for Ancient Church History: From the Apostolic Age to the Close of the Conciliar Period The value of the source-book has long been recognized in the teaching of general history. In ecclesiastical history quite as much use can be made of the same aid in instruction. It is hoped that the present book may supply a want increasingly felt by teachers employing modern methods in teaching ecclesiastical history. It has grown out of classroom work, and is addressed primarily to those who are teaching and studying the history of the Christian Church in universities and seminaries. But it is hoped that it may serve the constantly increasing number interested in the early history of Christianity. In the arrangement of the selected illustrative material, a chronological analysis and grouping of topics has been followed, according to the lines of treatment employed by K. Muller, F. Loofs, Von Schubert in his edition of Moeller's text-book, and by Hergenrother to some extent. The whole history of ancient Christianity has accordingly been divided into comparatively brief periods and subdivided into chapters and sections. These divisions are connected and introduced by brief analyses and characterizations, with some indications of additional source material available in English. A bibliography originally prepared for each chapter and section has been omitted. When the practical question arose of either reducing the amount of source material to admit a bibliography, or of making the book too expensive for general use by students, the main purpose of the book determined the only way of avoiding two unsatisfactory solutions of the problem, and the bibliography has been omitted. In this there may be less loss than at first appears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. D. 726-1305 However, the impulse of a small party must not be mistaken for the actual opinion of the German nation, though every artifice be tried to represent it as such. No German race desires to break entirely with its history. Great indeed would be the misfortune if a party were to succeed in interrupting the natural development of events by an arbitrary constitution. It would stand without root in the people. The handiwork of one party would quickly be dislodged by that of another; and Germany would be plunged into a whirlpool of change, continually stirring up the very depths of society.
