Book Synopsis Reading Process by : Constance Weaver
Download or read book Reading Process written by Constance Weaver and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Still authoritative. Still definitive. Now focused on the reading process. The Brief Edition of Constance Weaver's classic Reading Process & Practice begins with the seemingly simple question "What is reading, anyway? What is the essence of the reading process itself?" With so many competing, often antithetical interpretations, teachers need an answer they can trust and put to use. Connie Weaver knows the research and her book is designed to help teachers develop their own research-based definition of reading. Written in clear, concise language, Reading Process, Brief Edition, is still comprehensive. It takes the chapters from the third edition of Reading Process & Practice that explore the reading process, miscue analysis, and supporting struggling readers, combining them with features ideal for preservice, post-graduate, and in-service learning: a new introduction that succinctly discusses of the implementation and fallout from Reading First, the National Reading Panel report, and DIBELS definitions, concepts, interactive activities, and examples that make the research accessible a model of reading that synthesizes reading research from several perspectives while emphasizing insights from sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic research a companion website (www.heinemann.com/weaver) with printable forms for miscue analysis and case studies of readers across the grades a new, detailed, interactive study guide, perfect for study by individuals, reading groups, and whole classes. To answer "What is reading?" we must examine how readers interact with texts in normal settings. To learn what this research says, we can trust Connie Weaver and Reading Process, Brief Edition. It remains the essential guide for teachers who want an understanding of reading around which they can build effective practices.

Book Synopsis Reading as a Perceptual Process by : A. Kennedy
Download or read book Reading as a Perceptual Process written by A. Kennedy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-08-04 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is divided into five sections dealing with various fundamental issues in current research: attention, information processing and eye movement control; the role of phonology in reading; syntax and discourse processing and computational models and simulations. Control and measurement of eye movements form a prominent theme in the book. A full understanding of the where and when of eye movement control is a prerequisite of any complete theory of reading, since it is precisely at this point that perceptual and cognitive processes interact. Amongst the 'hot topics' included are the relation between parafoveal and foveal visual processing of linguistic information, the role of phonology in fluent reading and the emergence of statistical 'tuning' approaches to sentence parsing. Also discussed in the book are three attempts to develop quantitative models of reading which represent a significant departure in theory-building and a quantum step in the maturation of reading research. Much of the work reported in the book was first presented at the 5th European Workshop on Language Comprehension organised in April 1998 which was held at the CNRS Luminy Campus, near Marseilles. All contributions summarise the state-of-the-art in the relevant areas of reading research.
Book Synopsis The Cerebellum and the Reading Process by : Rita Moretti
Download or read book The Cerebellum and the Reading Process written by Rita Moretti and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a paradigm shift in the understanding of the role of the cerebellum in the nervous system, which is now suggested to be an integral component of the distributed neural circuitry, subserving even higher order functions, traditionally linked to the integrity of cerebral cortex. One of these functions is reading, which is one of the most prominent learned competencies in humans. The pathophysiology of dyslexia is largely unknown. It is usually related to brain cortical alteration. Recent evidence suggests dyslexia may involve binocular instability or alterations of accommodation. This book describes the possible role of the cerebellum in reading tasks, either considering its emergent role in mentation, either considering its traditional role in motor control. It examines the possible involvement of cerebellum in reading, which may be caused by an alteration of the diffuse projections which connect the cerebellum to different cortical areas via subcortical structures, by its involvement in spatial perception, in timing processing of cortical flow of information, and by a possible intrinsic property of the structure in cognition.

Book Synopsis EYE MOVEMENTS AND THE FUNDAMENTAL READING PROCESS by : Stanford E. Taylor
Download or read book EYE MOVEMENTS AND THE FUNDAMENTAL READING PROCESS written by Stanford E. Taylor and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is multifaceted; it is primarily dedicated to exploring the nature of the Fundamental Reading Process and to discussing the manner in which proficiency in these basic skills can be evaluated through eye-movement recording. Major topics include: the history of eye-movement recording; exploring eye-movement recording through the use of the Visagraph Eye-Movement Recording system; uses of eye movements in terms of reading appraisal; field use of the Visagraph system by schools, clinics, and optometrists; Visagraph EyeLink comparison in terms of eye-movement data; and the 2012 Visagraph Norm Study Report. Reading and tutoring centers will be very interested in both the diagnostic eye-movement recording techniques as well as the web-based practice techniques available through computer technology. Reading researchers will also be intrigued by the comprehensive description of the silent reading process, as well as the effect on the oral reading process with the development of proficiency in silent reading. Especially helpful is the information revealed through eye-movement recordings about the many subliminal factors involved in the process of reading, as well as the changes produced by today’s web-based computer techniques to modify the basic visual/functional, perceptual, and information-processing skills that comprise the silent reading process. In addition, the book will serve as a resource for graduate courses that cover what occurs during silent reading and what outcomes are possible with current reading practice programs using web-based computer technology. This unique text is essential reading for all who want to understand the role of the eye in silent reading and want to increase their instructional capability as teachers and remediation specialists.

Librarians in an academic library, while not directly responsible for teaching those skills, are involved in making such literacy part of the students' learning process. Broussard approaches the misconceptions about the relationship between libraries as a source of information literacy, and offers suggestions on providing students support when working on research papers.

Book Synopsis Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children by : National Research Council
Download or read book Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-07-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most children learn to read fairly well, there remain many young Americans whose futures are imperiled because they do not read well enough to meet the demands of our competitive, technology-driven society. This book explores the problem within the context of social, historical, cultural, and biological factors. Recommendations address the identification of groups of children at risk, effective instruction for the preschool and early grades, effective approaches to dialects and bilingualism, the importance of these findings for the professional development of teachers, and gaps that remain in our understanding of how children learn to read. Implications for parents, teachers, schools, communities, the media, and government at all levels are discussed. The book examines the epidemiology of reading problems and introduces the concepts used by experts in the field. In a clear and readable narrative, word identification, comprehension, and other processes in normal reading development are discussed. Against the background of normal progress, Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children examines factors that put children at risk of poor reading. It explores in detail how literacy can be fostered from birth through kindergarten and the primary grades, including evaluation of philosophies, systems, and materials commonly used to teach reading.
