The value of systematic reading need not be dwelt upon, and the inability of the average reader to select his own path needs no comment. These courses, which cover only a small fraction of the great mass of our literature, aim to present to the reader only the very best products of American belleslettres. The endeavor has been to include nothing in Course I which has not stood the test of time, and which has not been admitted by the general consent of critics to the select list of American Classics. As the field of Asian American literary studies gains increasing recognition, however, questions of misreading and appropriation inevitably arise. How is the growing body of Asian American works to be read? What holds them together to constitute a tradition? What distinguishes this tradition from the "mainstream" canon and other "minority" literatures?
