Book excerpt: This is a satirical fairytale for the 21st century. Troglodytes Watch is the Winter Wren, a direct descendant of the dinosaurs. It survived the calamitous upheaval caused by the meteorite perhaps because it was as it still is: a diminutive, secretive and watchful spirit. The substance of this tale begins with three ancestors who escape from a tribe of headhunters in Borneo around 700 B.C. and ends with some of their descendants on a nuclear waste dump island in the northwest Pacific Ocean where they are prepared to wait out the next evolution-changing, life-arresting calamitous upheaval. The foibles, frolics and conflicts of the various peoples are witnessed, narrated, and influenced by the spirit of Troglodytes. This tale is infused with some literary, some facetious and some deliciously infuriating commentary. The figures are drawn by the writer and the foreign words and expressions should be no burden to the Reader. Relax, read and enjoy the book.

As he comes to know the children and sees how they live, Chi Huang is drawn deeper and deeper into their complex and desperate lives. The doctor soon realizes that to truly help these children, he will have to follow the example of Jesus: live among them, love them in spite of their brokenness, and cling to his faith in God’s goodness, even when it appears it is nowhere to be found. A true story that will inspire and challenge readers to greater faith and action.

Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller "An irreverent satirical fantasy about a sudden and violent upheaval.…Think Tom Robbins channeling Jonathan Swift." —David Takami, Seattle Times Adjustment Day is an ingenious darkly comic work in which Chuck Palahniuk does what he does best: skewer the absurdities in our society. Geriatric politicians bring the nation to the brink of a third world war to control the burgeoning population of young males, while working-class men dream of burying the elites. Adjustment Day’s arrival makes real the logical conclusion of every separatist fantasy, alternative fact, and conspiracy theory lurking in the American psyche.

His out-of-the-ordinary experiences teach him to see the world through different eyes. Disgusted by the modern world, he embarks on an urban odyssey in order to find peace and freedom in a world gone mad. Throughout his adventure, he encounters people from his past who assist him along the way. His friends offer him a temporary sense of home, along with utilities and tools that would prove to be useful. But, after being jumped by a bunch of hoodlums, he is left, once again, with no backbone, no food, no shelter. Out of desperation, he seeks refuge at an old friend’s house where he reconnects with his best friend from high school, Tony. Like Corey, Tony is experiencing his own problems. After losing his roofing job he is practically homeless, also. Tony resonates with Corey’s sense of displacement, and the two boys band together in face of an unforgiving world. However, the boys’ search for freedom and peace ironically drags them into the darkest corners of suburbia, where they acquaint themselves with a dysfunctional drug dealing family who provide them with the income they need to flee the town, but, as the boys soon discover, this type of lifestyle doesn’t go without its fair share of consequences.

Book excerpt: The beautiful struggle of a girl desperate for the one relationship that has caused her the most pain Cassie O'Malley has spent the past two and a half years in a mental institution—dumped there by her mother, against her will. Now, at 18, Cassie emancipates herself, determined to start over. She attends college, forms new friendships, and even attempts to start fresh with her mother. But before long, their unhealthy relationship threatens to pull Cassie under once again. As Cassie struggles to reclaim her life, childhood memories persist and confuse, and Cassie must consider whose version of history is real, and more important, whose life she must save. However, plastic surgeons are also becoming more willing to explore them, and minimally invasive cosmetic and aesthetic procedures are now an established interdisciplinary topic. Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Procedures - A Guide for Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons addresses the needs of both these specialties. It provides a comprehensive overview of the most relevant and widely used minimally invasive procedures, presented in a practical and straightforward style. Rather than a broad overview of the literature, it offers a step-by-step guide to clinical procedures. Each chapter explores a single clinical procedure, discussing the theoretical basis; the materials needed; the methods and techniques; clinical follow-up; before-and-after illustrations; as well as the side effects and complications and their management. It also includes a summary of tips and relevant references. With more than a hundred procedures presented and discussed in a clinically applicable format, Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Procedures - A Guide for Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons is a practical manual for all dermatology and plastic surgery practitioners who are interested in aesthetic medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of scar revision techniques can be utilized to treat specific types of scars, in combination with each other or with adjunctive therapies to achieve optimal results. Pathological conditions like hypertrophic scars and keloids are still challenging. Though a number of therapies exist to treat keloids, such as intralesional steroids and anti-metabolites, cryosurgery, to name a few, none are definitive in treatment. Understanding the molecular basis of keloids may lead to development of new therapies. Striae, also known as ‘stretch marks’, are extremely common, disfiguring and a real challenge to treat. Management of striae is a neglected field of research. Except for topical retinoids, the efficacy satisfactorily. Current treatment options include chemical peels, lasers and collagen induction therapy, with a tendency towards active intervention. However, studies are necessary to determine treatment strategies which produce results that are effective with minimal adverse effects. Post-acne scarring is one of the most common causes of facial scars, causing considerable cosmetic disability. Acne is a common skin disorder, unfortunately affecting a large number of teenagers. Usually patients have a combination of different types of scars; hence no single modality is useful. A combination of procedures is generally required for a satisfactory cosmetic outcome. The use of fractional lasers is gaining importance, as it is a minimally invasive procedure as compared to aggressive resurfacing procedures of the past. Collagen induction therapy is another promising technique. Today, patients are also getting up-to-date information about the various modalities available for scar treatment through media, such as magazines, advertisements and internet. However, exaggerated advertisements and information from nonprofessional sources, particularly with regard to lasers can influence patient expectations and result in unrealistic expectations. Patients need to understand that deep scars cannot be eliminated fully and can only be improved. They usually have high expectations from procedural techniques. Proper counseling is extremely important for a happy and satisfactory outcome. Current innovations and techniques in scar prevention and management and increasing use of minimally invasive surgeries are paving the way toward smoother, less noticeable scars. Every surgeon practicing aesthetics should be well versed with modalities of scar management and this is the aim of this clinical update.

Emma Perotti is on trial for murder. The victim was a young Chinese woman named An-Ling Huang, who walked into Emma’s ESL classroom some time ago and quickly became a major presence in her life. Emma’s husband never completely trusted the girl—but Emma, driven by a long-ago tragedy that haunts her with guilt—embraced her fully, even moving into a loft apartment with her after the couple’s marriage started to deteriorate. What really happened between these two women—and the men in their lives—is tantalizingly revealed, in a “taut psychological thriller [and] a gripping, intelligent read” (Publishers Weekly).
