Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Raritan River is the largest river in New Jersey, flowing from the states western mountains for approximately 16 miles toward the tidewaters of New Brunswick, from which point it widens over 14 miles before reaching the Raritan Bay. By the end of the 20th century, this estuary, known as the Lower Raritan River, was one of the most polluted in the nation. The very industrialization that brought economic prosperity to the communities along the Lower Raritan River was also the origin of the rivers contamination. Today, however, the waterway is making a comeback. Along the Raritan River: South Amboy to New Brunswick includes historical maps and photographs to tell the story of this changing cultural landscape and its natural beauty and resources, historic floods, economic enterprise, devastating pollution, and continued renewal and recovery.

Book excerpt: Dan Hyland, as a boy growing up in the city of New Brunswick, New Jersey from 1930-1938, saw the last boats being locked through the Delaware and Raritan Canal. He knew the old lock keepers and people who lived in the abandoned barges along the canal. The Raritan River and the D.& R. Canal provided recreation that was both exciting and extremely dangerous. Dan rode the ice flows on the Raritan after city work crews dynamited the frozen river in the early spring. He met strange and colorful people with names like "Corker Pete" and "Two-Cent Itszi." Dan and his buddies pulled a lot of stunts, caused mischief, and had run-ins with waterfront bullies. He enjoyed a free and virtually unsupervised boy's life. Money was nearly non-existent, so Dan and his friends pooled their resources, skills, and imaginations to find ways of earning money to go to the movies and acquire their play equipment. They learned how to capitalize on the neighborhood bootleggers and traveling junkmen. "River Rats: Growing Up on the Raritan River" is a memoir of the Great Depression. The stories are upbeat and at times humorous, reminiscent of the exploits of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many older American cities struggle to remain vibrant, New Brunswick has transformed itself, adapting to new forms of commerce and a changing population, and enjoying a renaissance that has led many experts to cite this New Jersey city as a model for urban redevelopment. Featuring more than 100 remarkable photographs and many maps, New Brunswick, New Jersey explores the history of the city since the seventeenth century, with an emphasis on the dramatic changes of the past few decades. Using oral histories, archival materials, census data, and surveys, authors David Listokin, Dorothea Berkhout, and James W. Hughes illuminate the decision-making and planning process that led to New Brunswick’s dramatic revitalization, describing the major redevelopment projects that demonstrate the city’s success in capitalizing on funding opportunities. These projects include the momentous decision of Johnson & Johnson to build its world headquarters in the city, the growth of a theater district, the expansion of Rutgers University into the downtown area, and the destruction and rebuilding of public housing. But while the authors highlight the positive effects of the transformation, they also explore the often heated controversies about demolishing older neighborhoods and ask whether new building benefits residents. Shining a light on both the successes and failures in downtown revitalization, they underscore the lessons to be learned for national urban policy, highlighting the value of partnerships, unwavering commitment, and local leadership. Today, New Brunswick’s skyline has been dramatically altered by new office buildings, residential towers, medical complexes, and popular cultural centers. This engaging volume explores the challenges facing urban America, while also providing a specific case study of a city’s quest to raise its economic fortunes and retool its economy to changing needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly one hundred seventy years, the Delaware and Raritan Canal has meandered across the narrow waist of New Jersey through bustling cities, suburban towns, and rural landscapes. One of the most successful towpath canals in the United States, the Delaware and Raritan carried more tonnage in 1866 than the famous Erie Canal. Transporting mainly anthracite coal, the Delaware and Raritan also stimulated industries as diverse as Roebling's wire-rope factory in Trenton, Johnson & Johnson pharmaceuticals in New Brunswick, and Fleischmann's Distillery in East Millstone. Today, as the centerpiece of the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, the canal provides the people of central New Jersey with both a water supply and a premier recreational facility. The Delaware and Raritan Canal introduces you to this manmade waterway through some two hundred historical photographs and postcards. In these pages, discover the locks, aqueducts, and machinery that enabled the waterway to transport military men and supplies between New York and Philadelphia during three wars. See how inventor John Holland used the canal to deliver his Holland VI submarine to Washington for its naval trials and how luxury yachts, including J.P. Morgan's Tarantula, cruised the waterway. The Delaware and Raritan Canal documents a historical and recreational gem in the heart of New Jersey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 18th and 19th centuries, covered bridges dotted the landscape of New Jersey, providing safe passage to travelers. Forty-five covered bridges once crossed waterways in all corners of the state. Perhaps the most extraordinary examples of these wooden bridges were found along the western border, crossing the Delaware River into neighboring Pennsylvania. These bridges were feats of construction and engineering but were ultimately unable to prevent the inevitable fate of almost all the covered bridges of the state, namely ice, floods, and fire as well as the development of new materials and technology. Today, only one covered bridge survives in New Jersey. The Green Sergeant's covered bridge in Hunterdon County was constructed over the Wickecheoke Creek in 1872 and has stood the test of time. New Jersey's Covered Bridges showcases the rich transportation history of these structures and pictorially honors the lost ones.
