Depuis 30 ans maintenant, les Années européennes visent à promouvoir des moments d'échanges et de discussions entre les citoyens et les décideurs autour d'un thème donné. Cependant, c'est la première fois qu'une Année européenne se penche sur ce que l'Union fait en dehors de ses frontières, pour sensibiliser et impliquer les citoyens et le grand public sur le rôle de l'UE en tant qu'acteur mondial, autour de la devise ±Notre monde, notre dignité, notre avenir. L'Union européenne (UE) et ses 28 États membres restent le plus grand donateur d'aide au monde : en 2013, elle a consacré 56,5 milliards d'euros à l'aide publique au développement - soit plus de la moitié de l'aide publique mondiale. L'UE a longtemps été un moteur de la coopération internationale, non seulement en apportant une aide financière, mais aussi en favorisant le débat au niveau international. Dans le cadre de son ±Programme pour le changement, en 2011, l'UE a adopté une stratégie visant à transformer la façon dont l'Europe lutte contre la pauvreté, en allouant les fonds aux pays les plus vulnérables et ciblant un nombre limité de secteurs où l'impact et les résultats peuvent être les plus importants. L'objectif est de permettre aux personnes, particulièrement les plus vulnérables - à commencer par les femmes, les enfants et les jeunes - de sortir définitivement de la pauvreté. L'UE est également étroitement associée aux discussions en cours sur l'avenir du développement durable. L'année 2015 s'annonce comme un moment charnière pour le développement à l'échelle mondiale. Il s'agit de la date butoir pour atteindre les Objectifs du Millénaire pour le développement, dont les dirigeants internationaux ont convenu en 2000, et qui consacrent leur engagement à réduire la pauvreté dans le monde et à sauver des millions de vies. Ce sera également l'année de nouvelles décisions importantes sur les politiques de développement, de l'environnement et du climat, dans la mesure où le monde cherche à définir un cadre futur pour l'éradication de la pauvreté et la réalisation du développement durable en septembre 2015, lors de l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies.--
