Book excerpt: Two-thirds of degenerative diseases of the vertebral column involve the lumbar spine. Magnetic resonance imaging plays a pivotal role in diagnosis and treatment. With more than 450 illustrations and 78 case studies illustrating various constellations of findings, this book provides a wealth of illustrations that guide the reader through the MR imaging of lumbar disk herniations and spinal stenosis: Impressive series of MR images illustrate both common and unusual findings, helping to enhance conceptual understanding and sharpen diagnostic perception. Clinical findings and progression are covered in addition to MRI findings, helping the reader to appreciate the correlations between clinical and imaging findings. The role of diagnostic imaging is addressed for specific disorders, helping to foster the more discriminating use of imaging procedures in the lumbar spine. The book concludes with a chapter on the current technique of performing CT-guided injections at the lumbar level.

Book excerpt: A general consensus exists, that lumbosacral nerve root compression is the primary cause of sciatica and neurogenic claudication, although humoral and vascular factors certainly play a role as well. This book focuses on imaging the various ways in which nerve root compression can come about, and determining which anatomic features are reliably associated with the production of radicular pain. After a discussion of the nature of radicular pain and related symptoms, spinal imaging techniques and options are reviewed, with emphasis on the role of MR myelography in assessing the intradural nerve roots. A chapter on normal topographic, sectional, and functional radiologic anatomy is followed by presentations on pathologic anatomy, addressing mechanisms of nerve root compression, and on pre- and postoperative imaging. Features relevant to prediction of the natural history are discussed, and a section is devoted to the performance and reporting of a spinal imaging study.

Book excerpt: This easy-to-consult guide describes new minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of vertebral lesions that are accompanied by fewer complications and side-effects, reduce the risks of anesthesia, and lower costs. Clear accounts are provided of CT and X-ray guided techniques for vertebral augmentation in different regions of the spine and for the treatment of vertebral tumors by means of cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, and embolization. Helpful information is also provided on imaging, biomechanics, biopsy, and biomaterials. Like other books in the Springer series New Procedures in Spinal Interventional Neuroradiology, this practice-oriented volume will fill a significant gap in the literature and meet the need expressed by a large number of specialists (interventional neuroradiologists and radiologists, neurosurgeons, and orthopedists) for a topical and handy guide that specifically illustrates the presently available materials and methods.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Percutaneous nuclectomy according to the Onik method is an avantgarde method used to remove the intervertebral disc by percutaneous access and with closed surgery. The instrumentation and the procedure are simple. The main feature is the smaller diameter of the probe (2mm) which fragments and aspires the small chips of pulpy nucleus. It reduces the risk of discitic infections (occurring in various percentages with all methods of percutaneous discectomy) because the hole in the anulus, being small, closes spontaneously after the probe is removed. Moreover postoperative acute lumbar pain has been reported to occur less frequently. This method is carried out under local anesthesia, with radioscopic and intraoperative discographic monitoring. By consulting this atlas orthopaedists, neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists may learn this method easily, because every detail is clearly presented and illustrated with a great number of coloured pictures.

Book excerpt: It is amazing to discover how little importance has been attached to narrow lumbar canal syndromes up to now. Though H. VERBIEST gave a very accurate description in 1949, the neurologist's and neurosurgeon's preoccupations were mainly focused on discal pathology, disregarding the problem of an exclusively bony origin in canalar stenosis. A. WACKENHEIM and E. BABIN have the merit of becoming aware of the impor tance and originality of this problem; they organized in the beautiful surround ings of the Bischenberg near Strasbourg, a postgraduate course, in which the most eminent European specialists in this field participated. I am very honored to have been asked to write the introduction to this mono graphy, which contains all the studies reported and commented on during this meeting. Before considering the problem from the various radiologic points of view, it is in my opinion indispensable to define the term "stenosis." We could not do so more accurately than by assuming the definition proposed by A. WACKENHEIM and E. BABIN and unanimously confirmed by all those who attented the session.

Book excerpt: Offering a practical, case-based approach, Spanish and the Medical Interview: Clinical Cases and Exam Review is a unique, immersive study and review resource for medical Spanish. It provides extensive training and review in two formats: the print book contains numerous cases spanning a wide variety of clinical settings, formatted as a patient would present for medical attention, while the audio cases provide multiple opportunities to hone your listening comprehension skills. Together, these learning components test your knowledge and skills in caring for Spanish-speaking patients and prepare you for case-based examinations that test clinical skills in Spanish. This first-of-its-kind title is ideal as a stand-alone resource or as a companion to Dr. Ortega’s Spanish and the Medical Interview: A Textbook for Clinically Relevant Medical Spanish. Helps you improve your interviewing skills, your understanding of patient responses, and your ability to explain a diagnosis and plan of care to Spanish-speaking patients, so you can provide a higher quality of patient care and safety in your practice. Covers multiple presentations of cases in main organ system areas, including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, endocrine, genitourinary, neurologic, psychiatric, eye/ear/nose/throat, and pediatric, in multiple patient care settings such as urgent care, emergency department, outpatient clinic, and inpatient wards. · Focuses on topics that are particularly common in Hispanic/Latino patients and includes cultural health issues that may impact the patient's understanding of medical information, belief system, decision-making preferences, or access to care—all of which have a significant impact on your medical decision making and interviewing styles and effectiveness. Leads you through key information for each case, prompting you to use your medical Spanish clinical skills in a series of prompts and questions as the case unfolds. Assessment questions follow each case to test your comprehension. Provides more than two dozen audio cases to improve your listening comprehension of different nationalities and accents of Spanish-speaking patients. Provides real-world content from Drs. Pilar Ortega and Marco Alemán, who serve on the steering committee for the National Medical Spanish Taskforce that aims to standardize the educational approach to a national assessment examination for Medical Spanish. Expands your global skills set: in your home country, when caring for patients who speak Spanish, or when caring for patients in other countries through global medicine programs.
