Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioanalysis of Pharmaceuticals: Sample Preparation, Separation Techniques and Mass Spectrometry is the first student textbook on the separation science and mass spectrometry of pharmaceuticals present in biological fluids with an educational presentation of the principles, concepts and applications. It discusses the chemical structures and properties of low- and high-molecular drug substances; the different types of biological samples and fluids that are used; how to prepare the samples by extraction, and how to perform the appropriate analytical measurements by chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods. Bioanalysis of Pharmaceuticals: Sample Preparation, Separation Techniques and Mass Spectrometry: Is an introductory student textbook discussing the different principles and concepts clearly and comprehensively, with many relevant and educational examples Focuses on substances that are administered as human drugs, including low-molecular drug substances, peptides, and proteins Presents both the basic principles that are regularly taught in universities, along with the practical use of bioanalysis as carried out by researchers in the pharmaceutical industry and in hospital laboratories Is aimed at undergraduate students, scientists, technicians and researchers in industry working in the areas of pharmaceutical analyses, biopharmaceutical analyses, biological and life sciences The book includes multiple examples to illustrate the theory and application, with many practical aspects including calculations, thus helping the student to learn how to convert the data recorded by instruments into the real concentration of the drug substances within the biological sample.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Radiation Biology presents a contemporary, comprehensive review of the interactions between ionizing radiations and biological materials, tracking the consequences to three inevitable endpoints: cell restitution, cell death, or cell transformation. The introductory narrative is followed by examination of larger scale phenomena including tissue responses to radiation injury, organ failure modes, and resultant human illness including cancer. Ultimately, Fundamentals of Radiation Biology considers circumstantial radiation incidents impacting biological systems including radiological terrorism and radiation pollution remediation. Chapters presenting an overview of carcinogenesis and radiation therapy techniques based in radiobiology discuss two significant expansions central to the concerns of the text. This book takes an unprecedented narrative approach to radiobiology; each chapter expands on the fundamentals surveyed previously to lead the reader steadily to a panorama of radiation biocomplexity. No biological event happens in isolation. Actions evoke reactions that alter structures and cause living systems to adapt. It also examines the components constituting mammalian radiation response machinery and correlates them with resultant physiological behaviors.

Book excerpt: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has sponsored research and personnel safety standards development for exposure to Radiofrequency Radiation (RFR) for over twenty years. The Aerospace Medical Panel of the Advisory Group For Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD) sponsored Lecture Series No. 78 Radiation Hazards,! in 1975, in the Netherlands, Germany, and Norway, on the subject of Radiation Hazards to provide a review and critical analysis of the available information and concepts. In the same year, Research Study Group 2 on Protection of Personnel Against Non-Ionizing Electromagnetic Radiation (Panel VIIl of AC/243 Defence Research Group, NATO) proposed a revision to Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 2345. The intent of the proposal was to revise the ST ANAG to incorporate frequency-dependent-RFR safety guidelines. These changes are documented in the NATO STANAG 2345 (MED), Control and Recording of Personnel Exposure to Radiofrequency Radiation,2 promulgated in 1979. Research Study Group 2 (RSG2) of NATO Defense Research Group Panel VIII (AC1243) was organized, in 1981, to study and contribute technical information concerning the protection of military personnel from the effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation. A workshop at the Royal Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine, Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, U. K. was held to develop and/or compile sufficient knowledge on the long-term effects of pulsed RFR to maintain safe procedures and to minimize unnecessary operational constraints.

Book excerpt: It is essential to minimize damage to normal tissues during radiation therapy and many strategies have been employed in finding the best methods for radioprotection. This book integrates chemical, biological, and clinical perspectives on these strategies and developments, providing a comprehensive treatise. It emphasizes new concepts in radioprotection, aiming to inspire further basic science and clinical progress in radioprotector research. Radioprotectors: Chemical, Biological, and Clinical Perspectives includes the following topics: Early research on radioprotectors WR-2721, an aminothiol prodrug, as a radioprotector New results with naturally occurring thiols Nitroxides as effective radioprotectors in vitro and in vivo Radioprotection observed with radical scavengers or antioxidants Bone marrow radioprotection with cytokines and biological modifiers Multiple mechanisms of altering radiation response by eicosanoids Vascular response to radiation and the importance of vascular damage to normal tissue Modifiers of radiation-induced apoptosis Survey of clinical trials with radioprotectors Radiation biologists and oncologists, cancer researchers, and toxicologists will benefit from the findings discussed and strategies for future research.

Book excerpt: Mankind has evolved in a sea of radiation. We have been bombarded constantly by X rays, y rays, UV rays, and particulate radiations from outer space, and by terrestrial radiations from the ground we walk on, from our building materials, and from our own bodies. Recently, we have become increasingly subjected to man-made radiations, especially from the medical and defense industries. All of these radiations are capable of affecting us biologically, both to our benefit and to our detriment. This book provides a thorough review of the physical and biological dosimetry of these radiations. It is targeted to those health professionals who are concerned with understanding the mechanisms fundamental to the biological action of ionizing radiation or who are involved in the application, measurement, or treatment of the effects of such radiations. The first chapter, on "Bioeffect Dosimetry in Radiation Therapy," should be of special interest to anyone involved in the treatment of cancer by radiation. It includes a brief review of the history of the manipulation of time-dose parameters in order to improve therapeutic benefit, and an up-to-date analysis of time-dose relationships designed for use in fractionated radiotherapy and brachytherapy. This is followed by two chapters reviewing and comparing national and international protocols for the precise measurement of photon and electron radiations in therapy. These chapters should be invaluable to radiation physicists responsible for treatment machine calibrations.
