They are silica fiber of graded-index Ge-P doped fiber (A fiber) known as usual communication fiber, step-index borosilicate cladded pure silica core fiber known as better radiation hard fiber (B fiber) and graded-index borosilicate fiber (C fiber). Now, graded-index borosilicate fiber is chosen for influence of boron dopant to radiation characteristics. These fibers were exposed to X-ray radiation, 1 gamma-ray radiation and neutron flux radiation. (Author).

Book excerpt: Samples representative of most of the optical fibers presently available in lengths of 10 m or more were tested for their responses to energetic radiation. Glass fibers doped with three different levels of cesium were also prepared and tested. Permanent and transient x-radiation effects tests were performed. Neutron effects tests were performed. All of the fibers tested showed decreases in transmission when exposed to radiation. All of the fibers emitted fluorescent light pulses when exposed to intense x-ray pulses.

Book excerpt: Since it is generally recognized that radiation-induced loss is due to pre-existing defects in optical fiber, the technical approaches were designed to reduce the number of these defects in as-drawn fiber and to passivate the ones that remain. While our investigations confirmed the Ge doping leads to greater sensitivity, both the experimental and theoretical results remain ambiguous as to whether fluorine is beneficial or deleterious. The diffusion of impurities from the preform substrate tube into the core has been identified as an important source of induced loss. Hydrogen treatment has been found to be an effective means of passivating defects in as-drawn fiber, and improved the hardness of most fibers tested. Optical fibers, Radiation effects, Glass structure. (jes).

Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Energy is interested in extending the distributed sensing capabilities of optical instrumentation to high temperature reactor radiation environments. For this technology extension to be possible, the survivability of silica optical fibers needed to be determined in this environment. In this work the optical attenuation added to silica optical fiber exposed simultaneously to reactor radiation and temperatures to 1000°C was experimentally determined. Optical transmission measurements were made in-situ from 400nm-2300nm. For easy visualization, all of the results generated in this work were processed into movies that are available publicly [1].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was done of the effects of 14.7 Mev neutrons on transmission in optical fibers. This study was done with monochromatic light in the spectral range from 700 to 1700 nanometers. Of the fibers studied, two were high purity silica fibers, and two were Germanium doped core silica fibers. An important result of the study was that the radiation induced damage was wavelength related. The induced damage decreased rapidly as the wavelength increased from 800 to 1100 nanometers, with minimal damage noted above 1300 nanometers. This trend was due primarily to the energy levels of traps formed as the bombarding neutrons broke bonds within the silica. Several other interesting trends were noted. First, the water content of the fiber affected the amount of induced damage. Second, the method by which the fiber was made affected the damage levels. Third, the dopant used affected the damage levels. These trends deserved further study, but because the data base was so small, more specific conclusions were not possible. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the defect passivation approach, we have completed the evaluation of the effects of hydrogen treatment. Considerable reduction in radiation-induced absorption at long wavelengths (lamba>1 micron) has been observed for hydrogen-treated fibers. Posttreatment of irradiated fibers by hydrogen also increases the hardness of the fibers under subsequent irradiation. In addition, we found photolumunescence to be an effective characterization tool which provides additional evidence for the passivating effect of hydrogen treatment. Keywords include: Optical fibers, Radiation effects, and Glass structure.

Book excerpt: Three kinds of Bi-related materials co-doped silica optical fibers (BRDFs), including Bi/Al, Bi/Pb, and Bi/Er co-doped fibers, were fabricated using atomic layer deposition (ALD) and modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD). Then, the effect of irradiation on the optical properties of BRDFs was investigated. The experimental results showed that the fluorescence intensity, the fluorescence lifetime of BRDFs at the 1150¬†nm band, increased significantly with low-dose treatment, whereas it decreased with a further increase in the radiation dose. In addition, the merit MŒ± values of the BRDFs, a ratio of useful pump absorption to total pump absorption, decreased with an increase of the radiation doses. The Verdet constants of different doped fibers increased up to saturation level with increases in the radiation dose. However, for a Bi-doped fiber, its Verdet constant decreased and the direction of Faraday,Äôs rotation changed under low-dose radiation treatment. In addition, the Verdet constant increase of the Bi-doped silica fiber was much faster than that of other single mode fiber (SMF) and Pb-doped silica fibers treated with high-dose radiation. All of these findings are of great significance for the study of the optical properties of BRDFs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of radiation effects has developed as a major field of materials science from the beginning, approximately 70 years ago. Its rapid development has been driven by two strong influences. The properties of the crystal defects and the materials containing them may then be studied. The types of radiation that can alter structural materials consist of neutrons, ions, electrons, gamma rays or other electromagnetic waves with different wavelengths. All of these forms of radiation have the capability to displace atoms/molecules from their lattice sites, which is the fundamental process that drives the changes in all materials. The effect of irradiation on materials is fixed in the initial event in which an energetic projectile strikes a target. The book is distributed in four sections: Ionic Materials; Biomaterials; Polymeric Materials and Metallic Materials.
