Book excerpt: Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) encompass mobile devices such as laptops, tablets, handhelds, phones, that use wireless transmission technologies for access of information from anywhere any time. These networks can be formed by a group of ad hoc nodes irrespective of time and location, without any infrastructure and having no central control. Provisioning of on-demand Quality of Service (QoS) to the mobile users is a major challenge in this network. This book discusses ad hoc networks starting from the basic concepts to its issues, QoS parameters, their evaluation methods, QoS provisioning mechanisms, and challenges with an emphasis to channel allocation, routing, and multicasting. Performance analysis of well known ad hoc routing protocols such as DSDV, DSR and AODV with varying network conditions provides an idea of selecting suitable routing protocol for better QoS to the Mobile Hosts (MH) in MANETs. Application of VGA for channel allocation and MOO for QoS multicasting are the major contributed models in this book. This book will be helpful for postgraduate students as well as for research scholars, especially using ns-2 simulator for modelling and testing protocols in MANETs.

Book excerpt: With the advances in wireless technologies and development of mobile devices, Mobile Ad hoc Networks have emerged as the milestone and play an important role in establishing communication using no fixed infrastructure. Nodes are free to move randomly and communicate with each other through single hop if within transmission range or through multiple hop beyond transmission range. Due to unpredictable behavior of such networks, it is difficult to maintain the required Quality of Service (QoS). QoS in MANETs refers to the provision of guaranteed services on the network layer, defined in the performance metrics between application and service provider. The first important task in QoS network routing is to find a feasible route through the network between source and destination. This route should satisfy all the requirements to fulfill the QoS constraints for the desired service. The focus of the book throughout has been on the study and development of QoS constrained routing protocols to ensure better QoS provisioning.

Book excerpt: With the rapid proliferation of wireless networks and mobile computing applications, Quality of Service (QoS) for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) has received increased attention. Security is a critical aspect of QoS provisioning in the MANET environment. Without protection from a security mechanism, attacks on QoS signaling system could result in QoS routing malfunction, interference of resource reservation, or even failure of QoS provision. Due to the characteristics of the MANETs, such as rapid topology change and limited communication and computation capacity, the conventional security measures cannot be applied and new security techniques are necessary. However, little research has been done on this topic. In this dissertation, the security issues will be addressed for MANET QoS systems. The major contributions of this research are: (a) design of an authentication mechanism for ad hoc networks; (b) design of a security mechanism to prevent and detect attacks on the QoS signaling system; (c) design of an intrusion detection mechanism for band width reservation to detect QoS attacks and Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. These three mechanisms are evaluated through simulation.

Book excerpt: Quality of service provisioning in wireless ad hoc networks plays an integral part in determining the success of network-centric warfare as envisioned in future military operations. It requires good scalability of the QoS architecture since ad hoc networks in the battlefield tend to be large. Previous work attacking QoS in ad hoc networks seldom considers the scalability issues. In this paper, we propose a scalable QoS architecture for such networks. Our scheme draws upon the positive aspects of both IntServ and DiffServ, and extends upon the scalable LANMAR routing protocol to support QoS. The scheme is also capable of incorporating mobile backbone networks (MBNs) to further improve the scalability. Simulation results show that our proposed QoS architecture can achieve good scalability in terms of large network size and mobility.

Book excerpt: Focusing on an important and complicated topic in wireless network design, Wireless Quality of Service: Techniques, Standards, and Applications systematically addresses the quality-of-service (QoS) issues found in many types of popular wireless networks. In each chapter, the book presents numerous QoS challenges encountered in real-world applications and delineates ways to overcome these obstacles. Some of the challenges explored are performance impairments in WLAN hotspots, video streaming applications, and broadband wireless access. The techniques and mechanisms covered to tackle these problems include medium access and call admission control techniques, a parameter tuning algorithm, the QoS-enabling features of IEEE 802.11e, a Markov chain model, a probe-based distributed admission control mechanism, topology-transparent scheduling protocols, and a novel multicast congestion control mechanism. Addressing advanced topics and future directions, the expert contributors acknowledge the need for more research to solve several open issues. In the meantime, they offer innovative solutions to solve current QoS problems.

Book excerpt: [Author's abstract] Short term fairness, low delay jitter and high throughput are required to provide differentiated Quality of Service (QoS) levels in wireless ad hoc networks and wireless Local Area Networks (LAN). This thesis presents a study of differentiated service mechanism via Cooperative Medium Access Protocol in wireless LANs. The IEEE 802.11 MAC can provide service differentiation via Point Coordination Function (PCF) by polling or Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) by Static Priority (SP) and Dynamic Priority (DP). The DP and PCF in highly loaded networks and SP in lightly loaded networks perform poorly and can not support QoS levels of wireless LANs efficiently. This thesis proposes a novel and efficient differentiated service mechanism via Cooperative Medium Access Control (C MAC). Proposed mechanism performs very well under both cases, highly loaded and lightly loaded. It protects high priority classes from greedy sources while providing short term fairness within the priority classes and high network goodput. However, it encounters a small amount of additional packet loss and goodput degradation and it requires additional counter, Backoff Increment Counter, and additional knowledge, priority level of the transmitted packet.

Book excerpt: With the rapid growth of multimedia applications and the advances of wireless communication technologies, quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for multimedia services in heterogeneous wireless networks has been an important issue and drawn much attention from both academia and industry. Due to the hostile transmission environment and limited radio resources, QoS provisioning in wireless networks is much more complex and difficult than in its wired counterpart. Moreover, due to the lack of central controller in the networks, distributed network control is required, adding complexity to QoS provisioning. In this thesis, medium access control (MAC) with QoS provisioning is investigated for both single- and multi-hop wireless networks including wireless local area networks (WLANs), wireless ad hoc networks, and wireless mesh networks. Originally designed for high-rate data traffic, a WLAN has limited capability to support delay-sensitive voice traffic, and the service for voice traffic may be impacted by data traffic load, resulting in delay violation or large delay variance. Aiming at addressing these limitations, we propose an efficient MAC scheme and a call admission control algorithm to provide guaranteed QoS for voice traffic and, at the same time, increase the voice capacity significantly compared with the current WLAN standard. In addition to supporting voice traffic, providing better services for data traffic in WLANs is another focus of our research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QoS provisioning over Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) has attracted a great attention in recent years. While much research effort has been devoted to provide QoS over wired and cellular networks, QoS solutions for the support of real-time traffic over MANETs remains one of the most challenging and least explored areas. In fact, real-time applications such as voice and video could not function properly on MANETs without a QoS oriented medium access control (MAC) scheme. Indeed, real-time traffics claim strict requirements in terms of transmission delay and packet dropping that can be fulfilled only if the MAC sub-layer provides bounded channel access delay, and low collision rate. The purpose of this thesis is the proposal and analysis of an efficient reservation MAC protocol to provide QoS support over MANETs. Firstly, we study one major issue in resource reservation for MANETs which is reservation consistency. Our analysis of existing reservation MAC protocols for MANETs reveals that many reservation conflicts between neighbor nodes occur during the reservation establishment phase. These conflicts which are mainly due to collisions of reservation control messages, have an important impact on the performance of the reservation protocol, and lead to a significant collision and loss of packets during the life-time of the connection, which is not acceptable for real-time traffics. We design a new reservation MAC protocol that resolves these conflicts. The main principle of our protocol is to achieve better coordination between neighbor nodes in order to ensure consistency of reservations. Thus, before considering a reservation as successful, the protocol tries to ensure that each reservation control message transmitted by a node is successfully received by all its neighbors. In the second part of this thesis, we apply the proposed reservation protocol to voice traffic...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs), mobile nodes communicate over an error prone wireless channel without any centralized control. MANETs have n9 fixed topology because mobile nodes can freely join or leave the network at any time. As a consequence, it is difficult to guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) in these networks. The current routing , protocols provide only best effort services to the applications. Multimedia communications become very popular and require various types of QoS guarantee from the network such as guranteed throughput, bounded end-to-end delay. The QoS-aware routing (QA) and Admission Control (AC) protocols try to address the issue of QoS to some extent. In this work, a novel Flow Aware Admission Control (FAAC) protocol is designed to assure the guaranteed throughput to data sessions. It utilizes the route cache of routing protocol and devises a new admission technique to accept or reject data session to the network. It is partially coupled with the Oynamic Source Routing (OSR) protocol as it has used the basic functionality of route search of the OSR protocol. The protocol has two phases: (i) route discovery and (ii) test the route nodes resources for a data session entry. The performance evaluations show that the protocol outperforms the existing best effort routing and QAR and AC protocols such as OSR and Contention Aware Admission Control (CACP) protocols in providing QoS in MANETs. Mobility is a big challenge to assure guaranteed throughput to data sessions. To address this issue, we have designed F AAC-Multipath protocol that uses multiple routes for data transmission. The protocol maintains two tested routes for each data session and devises new fast switching mechanisms that switch the data flow from one route to another to guarantee the throughput. Multimedia applications require guaranteed throughput as well as bounded end-to-end delay. To address this issue we.have designed Flow Aware Admission Control-Multipath with Multiple constraints (F AAC-MM). This protocol assures the application with guaranteed throughput as well as bounded end-to-end delay. FAAC-MM switches the data flow from primary to secondary route on the basis of achieved throughput and end-to-end delay. We have also analyzed and compared the proposed protocols with the state of the art protocols such as CACP and Multi-path for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. The simulation results show that our protocol outperforms the above mentioned protocols.
