Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulpit Studies: Or Aids to Preaching and Meditation If to mark the origin of nations, the rise and fall of empires, the events which agitate states and overthrow kingdoms, be a pleasant study, must it not yield equal gratification to mark the commencement of time, and to trace all the families of the earth back to their first progenitor, since his life is so intimately connected with the state of the world around us, with our intellectual, moral, and social nature, our eternal destiny, and more especially with that plan of redemption on which all our hopes are founded ? His life is full of interest, in comparison of which the achievements of the most illustrious persons, and the events of the most remarkable epochs in history, dwindle into insignificance. Let us, then, consider, I. His Creation; II. His Glory; III. His Fall. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They are worthy Of the man, Of his Church, Of his many friends, and of a place on the table Of all, laymen and preachers. They who read will say, Why is the volume not double its present size? But no volume can convey the charm of the preacher's wonderful presence or superb man ner. Yet this does bear to us on every page the clear proof of the tropical splendor Of his genius, the breadth Of his great heart, and the real depth Of his spiritual life. He submits them with some humble confidence as illustrations of rules which he was wont to insist upon Not only would he show what he means by preaching Christ, in connection with whatever special subject, but by preaching the word. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke Divinity School Bulletin, Vol. 8: May, 1943 Despite the extempore nature Of preaching much time was spent in general preparation, such as reading, Bible study, prayer, and meditation. The circuit riders went from their knees to the pulpit. Henry Smith states that to have preached to a congrega tion without having previously been on his knees in prayer would have brought to the preacher a sense Of fear. Before religious services, Valentine Cook spent so much time in prayer that friends Often had to hunt for him and bring him from his knees to the pulpit. The Bible was the source book in the preparation of sermons, for it was the constant companion Of the circuit riders. They read it not only daily but Often hourly as they rode to and from their appointments. At ordination services Bishop Asbury would hold up the Bible and say: This is the minister's battle axe; this is his sword; take this therefore and conquer. The diaries Of the preachers tell Of rising early in the morning to spend time in the reading and study Of the Bible. Closely related to prayer and Bible reading was the practice of meditation. George F. Pierce is described as continually thinking about and brooding Over themes. The long rides between appoint ments gave the preachers much time for meditation on sermons. Matthew Simpson adopted the habit Of collecting texts in a note book, meditating upon them, and then suddenly using one as the basis Of a sermon. In the last analysis, the preachers relied upon the Holy Spirit for their messages. James Erwin states that my method was, and I think the general practice Of Methodist ministers Of that time, to pray for our texts and subjects, and keep the mind Open for any suggestions that the Holy Spirit was pleased to make - sometimes I would go into the pulpit without a text. And without knowing a word that I would say. He declared. However, that God never failed him. Nathan Bangs believed that, if the preacher was a man Of. God, he would always be helped by the Holy Spirit in delivering the sermon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament is more than a religious history of the nation of Israel. It is more than a portrait gallery of heroes of the faith. It is even more than a theological and prophetic backdrop to the New Testament. Beyond these, the Old Testament is inspired revelation of the very nature, character, and works of God. As renowned Old Testament scholar Bruce Waltke writes in the preface of this book, the Old Testament’s every sentence is “fraught with theology, worthy of reflection.” This book is the result of decades of reflection informed by an extensive knowledge of the Hebrew language, the best of critical scholarship, a deep understanding of both the content and spirit of the Old Testament, and a thoroughly evangelical conviction. Taking a narrative, chronological approach to the text, Waltke employs rhetorical criticism to illuminate the theologies of the biblical narrators. Through careful study, he shows that the unifying theme of the Old Testament is the “breaking in of the kingdom of God.” This theme helps the reader better understand not only the Old Testament, but also the New Testament, the continuity of the entire Bible, and ultimately, God himself.
