Book excerpt: Can the power of public speaking positively impact your child's life? Absolutely! Yet even as adults, most of us shy away from, or flat out fear, opportunities to speak in public. We tend to view them as opportunities for embarrassment. Effective communication skills are fundamental for achieving success and happiness, both personally and professionally. Unfortunately, this essential skill is not taught in school. As a result, the majority of adults resort to avoidance as a coping mechanism. However, with education and training in public speaking and leadership skills, your child will gain the confidence and courage to embrace the power of public speaking. In Confidence is Key, Distinguished Toastmaster Kathleen Petrone shares inspirational success stories of graduates from the Academy for Public Speaking who have overcome extreme anxiety and increased their levels of confidence, happiness, and success.Being a confident effective communicator empowers your child to develop better relationships, make friends easily, choose positive influences, avoid bullying, and be a better listener. Students who learn to organize and present their thoughts are not only more confident, but also earn better grades in school.Additional benefits of conquering the fear of public speaking for your child include joining the speech and debate team, competing in speech contests and winning scholarships, acing interviews, embracing leadership, winning elections, experiencing success, and inspiring positive change. At the Academy for Public Speaking, we teach children their voice is a powerful tool they can use to make a positive difference in not only their own lives and the lives of the people they love, but also in the lives of others. With confidence and effective communication skills, a world of opportunities awaits for your child.

Book excerpt: Confidence is an integral aspect in the growth and development of teenagers. Teen self-esteem attains its peak at the age of around 15 to 16 years. Depending on how the parents, guardians and the community as a whole handle the teenagers at this point, their confidence level may either plummet or rise. Self-esteem is generally related to how we perceive and feel about ourselves in terms of our abilities and attributes. Contrary to the beliefs of many people, teen confidence is deeply rooted and taps into the pre-teen years. A child who was mistreated and exposed to physical abuse at an early age may easily develop a low self-esteem all throughout his/her teenage years. At the pre-teen level, the barometer for self-worth focuses on physical attributes. This is why it is common to find a child who is short, yellow skinned or fat, having low self-esteem. The earlier the teenagers are taught on how to believe in themselves and seek for ways of self-improvement the better their foundation will be in terms of self-confidence. The parents and the society at large should have a way of managing their expectations concerning the teenagers so that they do not demand too much from them. Teenagers should also be trained on how to make great first impressions as this will help them boost their confidence and make them productive in their future lives. Negative attitudes have been singled out as one of the most poisonous tendencies that can easily way down teenagers making them dull and less cheerful. The doctrine of positivity should be nurtured in them right from a tender age so as to give them a positive outlook on life. In order to come up with a comprehensive teenage self-esteem management roadmap, the parents and guardians should first identify the low self-esteem cases. This will enable them to chart forward on how to build their confidence levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reason for writing this book is to help as many people as possible face glossophobia. Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the fear of public speaking. Some people have this specific phobia, while others may also have a broader social phobia or social anxiety disorder. It is said that 75% of Americans have a fear of public speaking. Many clients come to me because they are afraid to speak in public. They get flustered which increases their anxiety level. I had one client who suffered from social anxiety. Another client whose palms sweated so much that you could see the sweat drops when she spoke. Others come to me because even though they talk in public all the time, they want to ensure that their presentation is 'on point!' Many are clients that run for public office, and they want to speak well when involved in candidate forums, meet and greets, and debates. Also, I have many teenaged, and some pre-teen clients whose parents send them to me in part due the enormous time they spend on their cell phones and video games. Too many of our children are growing up minus the social skills that they will need to succeed in the world. Parents want their teens armed with interview skills for college entrance and future employment. The bottom line with teens is that young people who are afraid to speak in public, grow up to be adults who are afraid to speak in public. Seeking coaching for your youth is an investment that will pay off for the rest of their lives!
