Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public reading programs are flourishing in many Latin American cities in the new millennium. They defy the conception of reading as solitary and private by literally taking literature to the streets to create new communities of readers. From institutional and official to informal and spontaneous, the reading programs all use public space, distribute creative writing to a mass public, foster collective rather than individual reading, and provide access to literature in unconventional arenas. The first international study of contemporary print culture in the Americas, Public Pages reveals how recent cultural policy and collective literary reading intervene in public space to promote social integration in cities in Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Chile. Marcy Schwartz looks at broad institutional programs such as UNESCO World Book Capital campaigns and the distribution of free books on public transportation, as well as local initiatives that produce handmade books out of recycled materials (known as cartoneras) and display banned books at former military detention centers. She maps the connection between literary reading and the development of cultural citizenship in Latin America, with municipalities, cultural centers, and groups of ordinary citizens harnessing reading as an activity both social and literary. Along with other strategies for reclaiming democracy after decades of authoritarian regimes and political violence, as well as responding to neoliberal economic policies, these acts of reading collectively in public settings invite civic participation and affirm local belonging.
Book Synopsis The Rational Public by : Benjamin I. Page
Download or read book The Rational Public written by Benjamin I. Page and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-05-27 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental study is a comprehensive critical survey of the policy preferences of the American public, and will be the definitive work on American public opinion for some time to come. Drawing on an enormous body of public opinion data, Benjamin I. Page and Robert Y. Shapiro provide the richest available portrait of the political views of Americans, from the 1930's to 1990. They not only cover all types of domestic and foreign policy issues, but also consider how opinions vary by age, gender, race, region, and the like. The authors unequivocally demonstrate that, notwithstanding fluctuations in the opinions of individuals, collective public opinion is remarkably coherent: it reflects a stable system of values shared by the majority of Americans and it responds sensitively to new events, arguments, and information reported in the mass media. While documenting some alarming case of manipulation, Page and Shapiro solidly establish the soundness and value of collective political opinion. The Rational Public provides a wealth of information about what we as a nation have wanted from government, how we have changed our minds over the years, and why. For anyone interested in the short- and long-term trends in Americans' policy preferences, or eager to learn what Americans have thought about issues ranging from racial equality to the MX missile, welfare to abortion, this book offers by far the most sophisticated and detailed treatment available.

Book Synopsis Creating Smart-er Cities by : Mark Deakin
Download or read book Creating Smart-er Cities written by Mark Deakin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon the smart experiences of "world class" cities in North America, Canada and Europe, this book provides the evidence to show how entrepreneurship-based and market-dependent representations of knowledge production are now being replaced with a community of policy makers, academic leaders, corporate strategists and growth management alliances, with the potential to liberate cities from the stagnation which they have previously been locked into by offering communities: the freedom to develop polices, with the leadership and strategies capable of reaching beyond the idea of "creative slack"; a process of reinvention, whereby cities become "smarter," in using intellectual capital to not only meet the efficiency requirements of wealth creation, but to become centres of creative slack; the political leadership capable of not only being economically innovative, or culturally creative, but enterprising in opening-up, reflexively absorbing and discursively shaping the democratic governance of such developments; the democratic governance to sustain such developments. Drawing together the critical insights from papers from a collection of leading international experts on the transition to smart cities, this book proposes to do what has recently been asked of those responsible for creating Smarter Cities. That is: provide the definitional components, critical insights and institutional means by which to get beyond the all too often self-congratulatory tone cities across the world strike when claiming to be smart and by focussing on the critical role master-plans and design codes play in supporting the sustainable development of communities. This book was published as a special issue of Urban Technology.
