Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rahill's Corporation Accounting and Corporation Law There are hundreds of books devoted to book-keeping in general, but none that I know of devoted entirely to this important. Branch of the science of book-keeping. That this is not complete I own. That it has its shortcomings I confess, but I trust it will not be judged by its shortcomings but rather by such merit as may be found in it. I have endeavored to make this work more than interesting. My aim has been to make it instructive and useful to the large number of good book-keepers who have not had practical training in this branch of ac counting. No one man knows all there is to be known of any science and I do not claim to be a master of this, therefore I invite. And will appreciate friendly criticism and endeavor to profit by it in the future. Stock Exchanges are so interwoven with Stock Companies that they necessarily form a part of this work and constitute one of its most interesting features. A digest of the laws of all the states is also a unique and very valuable appendix. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Account: Being a Concise Treatise on the Right and Liability to Account, the Taking of Accounts, and Accountants Charges The Law of Account seems of sufficient import ance to warrant the belief that a separate work on the subject may not be out of place. The subject is continually coming before the Courts, and is being daily dealt with in Judges' Chambers. It is, moreover, one of the most important and most frequent matters with Which Solicitors have to deal. 'tliere is therefore some ground for thinking that a Concise Treatise on the subject may prove of use to both branches of the Legal Profession, and may also be of service to Liqui dators, Receivers, Accountants, and others who are called upon to keep and audit public and other Accounts. During that period there has been a certain amount of legislation, and a great number of cases have been decided. All of this I have endeavoured to incorporate in this edition. I have been compelled to divide the book into two volumes, but in other respects the very kind reception which was accorded to the first edition has led me to keep to my original plan. Accordingly, while I have dealt with the subject from a lawyer's point of View, I have given very special attention to all matters which concern accountants, secretaries, auditors, receivers, and liquidators. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classified C. P. A. Problems and Solutions 1915 This book has been prepared for the purpose of providing applicants for the degree of Certified Public Accountant, with the most important problems relating to accounting and auditing selected from all the available C. P. A. examination questions given in the year 1915 in the various states, together with complete answers and solutions to the same. Space has not permitted the inclusion of questions on commercial law. The author has selected those questions that seemed to be most representative and most useful to the student, and has classified these according to their subjects. Because of the necessity of selecting questions which are representative, it has not been possible to take these questions in even approximately the same numbers from each state. Wherever essentially the same subject has been brought out in the different state examinations, the questions have been grouped and one answer given for all. Where it has been possible, answers to questions have been quoted from the accepted authorities on accounting. Too frequently in the presentation of C. P. A. accounting problems, questions involving technical points and catches have been preferred, and the more important questions involving system and procedure have been omitted. The catches and the technical questions have not been ignored in the present volume, but most of the problems given are those which cover general matters of system and procedure. In a few cases lengthy and somewhat involved problems concerning the designing of accounting systems and the necessary forms therefor have been included. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Company Law The increase in the size of this volume since the last edition does not materially affect the amount of matter intended for the ordinary student of Company Law with the exception of some additions to the chapters on winding up, which have been considered as too brief. The greater part of the increase in bulk is due to the addition of some special notes on the duties and position of receivers and liquidators, which are intended for the use of accountants. The author is much indebted to his friend Mr. Herbert Jacob of the Inner Temple for valuable suggestions and information as to the requirements of accountants in this direction. The winding-up rules have been printed at the end of the volume for the use of the same class students. The author would have preferred to include the Companies Act in the Appendix, but in the absence of proof of any extensive demand for this addition the publishers have been thereby entailed was hardly justified for the purposes of the present edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the opportunities and challenges facing the accounting profession in an increasingly globalized business and financial reporting environment. It looks back at past experiences of the profession in attempting to meet its public interest obligation. It examines the role and responsibilities of accounting to society including regulatory requirements, increased emphasis on corporate social responsibility, accounting fraud and whistle-blowing implications, internationalization of public interest obligations, and providing the education needed to be successful. The book incorporates an ethical dimension in making these assessments. Its focus is a conceptual, theoretical one drawing on classical philosophy, the sociology of professions, economic theory, and the public interest dimension of accountants as professionals. The authors of papers are long-time contributors to the annual symposium on Research in Accounting Ethics sponsored by the Public Interest Section of the AAA.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Auditing: Theory and Practice There is a demand for a practical book on auditing which up to this time has not been met. If my twenty-four years of continuous experience in professional accountancy work is a sufficient practical training, I trust I have established a prima facie excuse for the presentation of this book, which contains more of practice than of theory. Auditing, in its broadest sense, is the most important branch of accountancy. During the early years of my clerkship in the office of Mr. John Heins, of Philadelphia (then President of the American Association of Public Accountants), and later, while acting as an instructor in the School of Accounts and Finance of the University of Pennsylvania, I strongly felt the need of a dependable textbook on the subject. My attention was all the more directed to the paucity of books on auditing and on other accounting and cognate subjects by contrast with the full and comprehensive literature of the legal profession which I had found of such great assistance in my studies preparatory to admission to the bar.
