Book Synopsis Extramural English in Teaching and Learning by : Pia Sundqvist
Download or read book Extramural English in Teaching and Learning written by Pia Sundqvist and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is unique in bringing together theory, research, and practice about English encountered outside the classroom – extramural English – and how it affects teaching and learning. The book investigates ways in which learners successfully develop their language skills through extramural English and provides tools for teachers to make use of free time activities in primary and secondary education. The authors demonstrate that learning from involvement in extramural English activities tends to be incidental and is currently underutilized in classroom work. A distinctive strength is that this volume is grounded in theory, builds on results from empirical studies, and manages to link theory and research with practice in a reader-friendly way. Teacher-educators, teachers and researchers of English as a foreign language and teachers of English as a second language across the globe will find this book useful in developing their use of extramural English activities as tools for language learning.

Download or read book Markings written by Dag Hammarskjold and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2006-10-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Perhaps the greatest testament of personal devotion published in this century." — The New York Times A powerful journal of poems and spiritual meditations recorded over several decades by a universally known and admired peacemaker. A dramatic account of spiritual struggle, Markings has inspired hundreds of thousands of readers since it was first published in 1964. Markings is distinctive, as W.H. Auden remarks in his foreword, as a record of "the attempt by a professional man of action to unite in one life the via activa and the via contemplativa." It reflects its author's efforts to live his creed, his belief that all men are equally the children of God and that faith and love require of him a life of selfless service to others. For Hammarskjöld, "the road to holiness necessarily passes through the world of action." Markings is not only a fascinating glimpse of the mind of a great man, but also a moving spiritual classic that has left its mark on generations of readers.

Book excerpt: The Nordic countries have collaborated in setting guidelines for dietary composition and recommended intakes of nutrients for several decades through the joint publication of the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR). This 5th edition, the NNR 2012, gives Dietary Reference Values (DRVs) for nutrients, and compared with earlier editions more emphasis has been put on evaluating the scientific evidence for the role of food and food patterns contributing to the prevention of the major diet-related chronic diseases. Recommendations on physical activity are included and interaction with physical activity has been taken into account for the individual nutrient recommendations wherever appropriate. A chapter on sustainable food consumption has been added. A Nordic perspective has been accounted for in setting the reference values. The NNR 2012 has used an evidence-based and transparent approach in assessing associations between nutrients and foods and certain health outcomes. Systematic reviews form the basis for the recommendations of several nutrients and topics, while a less stringent update has been done for others. The systematic reviews and individual chapters have been peer reviewed and the systematic reviews are published in the Food & Nutrition Research journal. The draft chapters were subject to an open public consultation. Recommendations have been changed only when sufficient scientific evidence has evolved since the 4th edition. The primary aim of the NNR 2012 is to present the scientific background of the recommendations and their application. A secondary aim is for the NNR 2012 to function as a basis for the national recommendations that are adopted by the individual

Book Synopsis Preconception Health and Care: A Life Course Approach by : Jill Shawe
Download or read book Preconception Health and Care: A Life Course Approach written by Jill Shawe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a practical, multidisciplinary approach to support a broad range of health professionals, social workers, public health workers and others tasked with providing health and care to young adults. The continuum of life begins with the health and wellness of parents prior to conception, followed by embryonic and fetal development, and continues throughout life. Each person’s life stages prepare them for the next and determine their health outcome and wellbeing over time. The text highlights the importance of promoting health throughout the lifespan, the influence of intergenerational health, and the concept of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease in epigenetic processes and embryology. Authors underscore the importance of advancing health equity and lift up some of the ethical considerations in this work. The authors explore specific interventions in four major categories: Lifestyle, Infections, Nutrition, and Contraception / Pregnancy Planning (LINC). Preconception care is defined by the World Health Organization as the provision of biomedical, behavioural and social health interventions to women and couples before conception. Preconception care includes evidence-based interventions to improve health status, to reduce behaviours, individual and environmental factors that contribute to poor health outcomes. This book offers readers evidence-based guidance regarding fertility awareness and sperm health, genetic counselling and lifestyle assessments, as well as mental wellbeing, alcohol, tobacco and pharmacotherapy, and specialist care for those with chronic conditions, including a review of medications. It also covers relevant infections, including HIV and the Zika virus, as well as different types of environmental and occupational exposure. The book employs a framework focusing on health promotion, the social determinants of health, and the science behind preconception care. Strategies for improving preconception and interconception health, including examples from around the globe, are described in detail.
Book Synopsis The Experience of the Foreign by : Antoine Berman
Download or read book The Experience of the Foreign written by Antoine Berman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1992-08-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the first authoritative analysis of the theory of translation in German Romanticism. In a systematic study of Herder, Goethe, Schlegel, Novalis, Humboldt, Schleiermacher, and Hölderlin, Berman demonstrates the importance of the theory of translation for an understanding of German romantic culture, arguing that never before has the concept of translation been meditated in such detail and such depth. Indeed, fundamental questions that arise again today, such as the question concerning the proper versus the literal, of the Other to a given culture, the essence of the work of art, and of language, all these issues, and many more, are shown to have been premeditated in a most important manner by these German Romantics.

Book Synopsis Reading for Children by : Judith Gustafson
Download or read book Reading for Children written by Judith Gustafson and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zacharius Topelius's Lasning for barn or Reading for Children series appeared on book shelves from 1856-1896. His works are now considered treasure trove of historical significance, and their emphasis on nature, the simplicity of daily life, spirituality, and morality teaches lessons that are just as relevant and important for readers today. Judith Gustafson has painstakingly translated these classic stories into English, making them available for worldwide enjoyment. Her goal was to present them as authentically as possible, bringing out the meaning, tone, and scriptural message that Topelius originally intended. Reading for Children is the perfect collection of stories to be read to or by children. I was pleasantly surprised by the innocence and beauty of Judith's translation. One can sense the poetic art of Zacharius Topelius in the phrasing and stories. It is not easy to translate the intent of the author when many years have passed and the language has evolved. Mrs. Gustafson has performed a difficult task well. -Dwight Gunberg, educator"

Book Synopsis Early Holocaust Memory in Sweden by : Johannes Heuman
Download or read book Early Holocaust Memory in Sweden written by Johannes Heuman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the memory of the Holocaust in Sweden and concentrates on early initiatives to document and disseminate information about the genocide during the late 1940s until the early 1960s. As the first collection of testimonies and efforts to acknowledge the Holocaust contributed to historical research, judicial processes, public discussion, and commemorations in the universalistic Swedish welfare state, the chapters analyse how and in what ways the memory of the Holocaust began to take shape, showing the challenges and opportunities that were faced in addressing the traumatic experiences of a minority. In Sweden, the Jewish trauma could be linked to positive rescue actions instead of disturbing politics of collaboration, suggesting that the Holocaust memory was less controversial than in several European nations following the war. This book seeks to understand how and in what ways the memory of the Holocaust began to take shape in the developing Swedish welfare state and emphasises the role of transnational Jewish networks for the developing Holocaust memory in Sweden.
