Book excerpt: Excerpt from Protestant Fiction It is true that by one means or another, and' especially owing to the work of the High Church party in the Establishment, our countrymen during the last fifty years have greatly advanced in the knowledge of things Catholic. It is equally true that a large proportion of those who calumniate us are paid officials of societies, whose occupation would be gone were the Church pourtrayed in her true colours, and whose interest it is to foster and develop popular prejudice against us. One such society, as Trut/z pointed out,1 has been formed by an enterprising publisher, who is its sole officer, for the express purpose of promoting the sale of his publications, many of which, on the authority of the same non Catholic organ of opinion, are an outrage upon decency. But the number of men of influence and independence who support these bodies is not only small, but decreasing; any one familiar with the reports of anti-catholic meetings published in Pro testant papers, will notice the constant repetition of the same names, and these of persons in no way representing English opinion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Novelty of Popery: And the Antiquity of the Religion of Protestants, Proved by Scripture and History "Where was the Protestant religion before Luther?" is a question that has often been asked with an air of confidence and triumph, by the advocates of a church which claims to be the only infallible expounder of the word of God. The object of the following essay is to answer this question, and to retort the charge of novelty in religion, on those who make such arrogant claims for the antiquity of their church. The importance of the question will be evident to every one who considers, that it relates not merely to some unessential doctrines, or external observances, but to the very foundation of a sinner's hope. If the Popish system be true, Protestants are left to the "uncovenanted mercies of God;" without a ministry, without sacraments, without hope! If it is false, how awful is the delusion, and how imminent the danger of those who rest all their hopes of salvation upon it! That the discussion is seasonable, must be apparent to all who are awake to the signs of the times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Protestant, Vol. 2 of 3: A Tale of the Reign of Queen Mary Since the late interview with Edward Wil ford, Sir Richard Southwell, to whom we must now return, had been much disturbed in mind. His fondness for his daughter, the dread he entertained lest the claim that Edward still made upon her, and her affection for him, should hereafter lead her to become the wife of a here, tic, allowed him no rest. And even in the midst of these tormenting reflections, he could not think upon Owen Wilford, the father of Ed ward, now suffering in prison, accused of heresy, and liable to the severest penalty of the law. Book excerpt: 'Titus, A Comrade of the Cross' is a runaway success in Christian fiction from the turn of the century. It was written for the purpose of bringing young people to emotionally invest in the story of Jesus and to be spiritually set alight by it. Titus is a young boy, born to a down on his luck fisherman who has turned towards violent crime and a downtrodden mother. His main companion, his brother Stephen is crippled as a result of being beaten by their cruel father, however he remains kind and sweet. After hearing of Jesus Titus is brusque at first, dismissing the possibility that Jesus would help them as 'heathen greeks'. He warns Stephen off his hopes of healing and he is hostile and wary of the people of Jerusalem and fears that they would not benefit from the new preacher in the area. He even looks forward to fighting the Jews although he does not approve of the theft his father is involved in. In their quest to escape their father and find peace, Stephen and Titus strike out, prompted by a terrible accident suffered by a neighbour's infant. They brush the Roman empire the wrong way, consider the cause of Barabbus, are imprisoned and consider carefully the idea of rebellion before finally coming as new and liberated people, together at the foot of the cross at history's most significant crucifixion. Florence Morse Kingsley was an accomplished writer of spiritual fiction who managed, despite creating fictional narratives and characters, to remain dogmatically faithful to the contents and spirit of the King James Bible and therefore most contemporary protestant doctrines. This book is suitable for all ages and particularly suitable for devotional reading with children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenot, Vol. 2 of 2: A Tale of the French Protestants The request for an udience was conveyed through the M uis of Seigne ai, with whom the count himself was we] acquainted; and he doubted not that it would be granted immediately, if he had preceded, -as he had every reason to believe he had, the ordinary courier from Poitou, bringing the news of the events which had taken place in that province. The letter of the young secretary, in retum to his application, arrived the next morning; but it was cold and formal, and evidently written under the immediate dictation of the king. Lt merely notified to the count that, for the next three days, the time appointed by his majesty for business would be fully occupied; that, in the mean time, if the business which brought the count to Paris were impor tant, he would communicate it to the minister under whose department it came. The note went on to add, that if the business were not one requiring immediate despatch, the young count would do well to come to Versailles, to signify the place of his abode at the palace, and to wait the monarch's leisure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from En Route In the many episcopal approvals bestowed on an admit able little French book setting forth devotions, a guild, and a cloistered community, in aid of the dying, much is said of the work of Freemasons. We are probably safe in saying that English Freemasons are Only members of a convivial society, who, knowing nothing of the splendour of Church vestments, banners and furniture, or of confraternities in which even the laity may share, have adopted their own ornate badges and ritual. Freemasons in England might well be let alone by the Church, and would do no harm, were it not that it is the boast of every Mason that his society is one all the world over; and in France, in Italy, and elsewhere, it has allied itself with much that is detestable and irreligious. We may take it, then, that when in France a man of position puts himself in distinct antagonism to the Church, and this is of course very different to ignoring it, or taking it for granted without writing about it, he is appealed to, not as in England by Protestants, but by Freemasons, Solidaires, even by Satanism, and the more he thinks of religion, the viler and more terrible is the temptation that assails him, is the home which offers itself to his spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rockite: An Irish Story Although the narrative here given is rather a combination Of incidents, occurring to different per sons, and in different places, than the strictly veracious history of an individual, nothing is over glrawn - nothing can be overdrawn in pourtraying the horrors of a system at this day in full and ri pened Operation: neither has the cheering augury of widely extending good, by spiritual means in the hands-of spiritual men, been in any wise falsified. Blessed be God! There are rnousau Ds, yea, tens Of thousands, who, having been wrapped in the deepest gloom of papery when this work was written, are now either swelling the ranks Of Christ's militant church on earth, or echoing the song of the re deemed in his triumphant church above.
