Download or read book Correlation and Causation Between Tourism Development and Economic Growth in Lebanon written by Nisrine I. Samara and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to study the direction of the causality between tourism development and economic growth in Lebanon, and to investigate the existence of a long-run relationship between the two variables. In order to reach our objectives, we estimate a Vector Auto Regression model and apply the Granger causality test. Our findings suggest a unidirectional causality running from economic growth to tourism development thus support the Growth Led Tourism hypothesis. They also identify a positive relationship in the short-run between tourism development and economic growth, and the impulse response fonction reveal a positive relation between them, marked by the positive reaction of either variable in response to a positive shock in the other. Those findings support the necessity to formulate policies aiming to enhance the tourism sector in Lebanon, as well as programs of action towards economic development. Limitations to this research included the unavailability of data which ruled out the initial choice of variables. The value of this study lies in the originality of its application in Lebanon. Moreover, its results further assert the need to develop the tourism sector and promote the expansion of the economy in Lebanon.

Book Synopsis Exploring Lebanon's Growth Prospects by : Charbel Nahas
Download or read book Exploring Lebanon's Growth Prospects written by Charbel Nahas and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper attempts to identify Lebanon's greatest constraints to economic growth, following a growth diagnosis approach. It concludes that fiscal imbalances and barriers to entry are most binding on long-term growth. Macroeconomic imbalances and related perceived risks affect the nature of investment decisions in Lebanon, in favor of liquid instruments rather than longer-term productive investments. Further, many barriers to entry discourage agents from investing in a number of markets: legal impediments to competition, corruption, and a set of fiscal incentives favoring the allocation of resources to non-tradable sectors, where potential demand and investment opportunities are scarcer. In turn, using a steady-state computable general equilibrium model, the paper assesses the long-term growth impact of a selected set of policy reforms envisaged to lift such constraints. Results suggest that 1 to 2 percentage points of additional GDP growth per year could be gained through public expenditure reform, greater domestic competition, and tax harmonization.

Download or read book Middle East and North Africa Economic Developments and Prospects, January 2011 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The impact of the global financial and economic crisis on the Middle East and North Africa region was relatively mild. Lack of integration and a large public sector helped insulate the region to some extent, but now these and other factors are slowing down the speed of its economic recovery. The report examines the major factors threatening the recovery and those that obstruct long-term growth, especially non-oil export growth, which in net terms contributed little to regional growth during the past decade, with non-oil exports remaining below potential in many countries in the region. The report emphasizes several major areas in need of policy makers\2019 attention, including restrictive trade policies, particularly those affecting trade in services; governance issues linked to uneven application of rules and regulations; inefficient and inflexible labor markets and scarcity of skills, innovation and technological capabilities."--page xi.
