Book excerpt: Translated by Rasmus B. Anderson LLD. The Younger Edda, also known as Snorre's Edda, or the Prose Edda, is a collection of Old Norse poems preserved by Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241). The Prose Edda forms the basis of what the world knows as Norse mythology, and contains legends of the creation of the cosmos and the best-known stories of Odin, Thor, and the other gods. The Prose Edda was originally referred to as simply the Edda, but was later called the Prose Edda to distinguish it from the Poetic Edda, a collection of anonymous poetry from earlier traditional sources compiled around the same time. This version contains an English version of the Foreword; the Fooling of Gylfe, the Afterword; Brage's talk, the Afterword to Brage's Talk, and the Important Passages in the Poetical Diction (Skaldskaparmal). It also includes an introduction, a full set of explanatory notes, a vocabulary list, and an index. The Prologue is a euhemerized Christian account of the origins of Nordic mythology: the Nordic gods are described as human Trojan warriors who left Troy after the fall of that city and who settled in northern Europe, where they were accepted as divine kings because of their superior culture and technology. The Fooling of Gylfe tells of the creation and destruction of the Nordic gods' world, and deals with many other aspects of Norse mythology. The Skaldskaparmal consists of a dialogue between AEgir, a god associated with the sea, and Bragi, a skaldic god, in which both Nordic mythology and discourse on the nature of poetry are intertwined."

Download or read book The Heathen Golden Dawn written by Isaac Hill and published by Aeon Books. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and complete curriculum of Heathen ceremonial magic. This foundational textbook contains a complete curriculum of occult training, for the serious student of ceremonial magic. The Golden Dawn system has been the most influential of the modern magic schools, inspiring many thousands of spiritual seekers across the world, but its Judeo-Christian religious framework has made it more difficult for modern polytheists. Taking the cue from John Michael Greer's The Celtic Golden Dawn, and with his blessing, this book uses the Golden Dawn magical system in a Heathen context with three tracks for the Anglo-Saxon, Norse and modern Heathen, as well as the formula for additional tracks. The course of study goes through four grades, "Thrall", "Karl", "Jarl" and "Konr", leading the student systematically from the foundations to complex ritual magic, all the while integrating and internalizing traditional lore. By the end of the course, the magician will be competent in rune magic, Heathen herbalism and herbal magic, magical brewing, planetary magic, amulet consecration, the Heathen cabala, in addition to rituals of transformation, invisibility, conjuration and self-initiation.

Book excerpt: "King Gylfe was a wise man and skilled in the black art. He wondered much that the asa-folk was so mighty in knowledge, that all things went after their will. He thought to himself whether this could come from their own nature, or whether the cause must be sought for among the gods whom they worshiped. He therefore undertook a journey to Asgard. He went secretly, having assumed the likeness of an old man, and striving thus to disguise himself. But the asas were wiser, for they see into the future, and, foreseeing his journey before he came, they received him with an eye-deceit. So when he came into the burg he saw there a hall so high that he could hardly look over it. Its roof was thatched with golden shields as with shingles..."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although positivism dismissed myths as childish fancy, bound to be superseded by reason, there has been a continuous reappraisal of the power of myths since the 19th century. Once viewed as primitive and unreliable accounts and an inadequate and distorted form of knowledge, myths came to be perceived as exemplary narratives, consisting of rich and complex symbolic constructs that carry meaning and a connection to reality. Myths then came to be regarded as a privileged expression of the human soul and of its possibly submerged and unconscious abysses and dramas. Rather than inherently obscure and elusive to a rational grasp, mythical narratives would therefore be driven by logical reasoning, giving shape to a particular worldview of life and humankind. The enduring power of mythical narrative is attested to by its very plasticity, subject to multiple recreations informed by changing concerns and insights. Mythical narratives have thus attracted the interest of various disciplines, from ethnology and history to philosophy, literature, sociology, politics, the history of religions and art history. This interdisciplinary volume studies how myths are inscribed and recycled within both individual and collective heritage, and examines the personal and political implications of multifaceted engagement with myths as one of the forms through which societies try to make sense of their perplexities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Heimskringla' is a collection of sagas about Swedish and Norwegian kings, beginning with the saga of the legendary Swedish dynasty of the Ynglings, followed by accounts of historical Norwegian rulers from Harald Fairhair of the 9th century up to the death of the pretender Eystein Meyla in 1177. It was written by Snorri Sturluson. Heimskringla consists of several sagas, often thought of as falling into three groups, giving the overall work the character of a triptych. The saga narrates the contests of the kings, the establishment of the kingdom of Norway, Norse expeditions to various European countries, ranging as far afield as Palestine in the saga of Sigurd the Crusader, where the Norwegian fleet is attacked by Arab Muslim pirates, referred to as Vikings.

Book excerpt: This book is about a great and rousing story of the last of the Viking kings, with truly incredible adventures. The highlight is not the language with flowery flourishes, but with jolting, abrupt changes in plot. There is no inner-dialogue, and the dialogue between characters is direct but halting, with little fluidity. It is obvious that this is an ancient text and a translation.
