Book excerpt: The Handbook on ground wave propagation is of special interest for communication, particularly broadcasting, at the lower frequencies where the mode has been in use for more than 90 years. It deals with fundamentals and theory, wide-scale considerations and prediction methods used for compatibility assessments and planning procedures. Smaller scale variability, which may be of major importance in assessing the quality of services, is also treated. The topics of measurements and phase are also covered.

Book excerpt: Radio Wave Propagation: Consolidated Summary Technical Report of the Committee on Propagation of the National Defense Research Committee presents all the scientific information and report of experiments. This book discusses the problems encountered in the propagation of radio waves. Organized into three volumes, this book begins with an overview of the technical developments in the study of tropospheric propagation. This text then outlines the general theory of standard and nonstandard propagation together with descriptions and results of transmission experiments designed to test the theory. Other chapters consider the more unusual problems concerning the radar behavior of targets. This book discusses as well the problems of radio wave propagation in the standard atmosphere at frequencies above 30 megacycles. The final chapter deals with the selection and utilization of local terrain features that affect propagation and the performance of equipment. This book is a valuable resource for scientists and engineers in the field of radio wave propagation.

Book excerpt: Wave Propagation Analysis of Smart Nanostructures presents a mathematical framework for the wave propagation problem of small-scale nanobeams and nanoplates manufactured from various materials, including functionally graded composites, smart piezoelectric materials, smart magneto-electro-elastic materials, smart magnetostrictive materials, and porous materials. In this book, both classical and refined higher-order shear deformation beam and plate hypotheses are employed to formulate the wave propagation problem using the well-known Hamilton’s principle. Additionally, the influences of small-scale nanobeams on the mechanical behaviors of nanostructures are covered using both nonlocal elasticity and nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theories. Impacts of various terms, such as elastic springs of elastic foundation, damping coefficient of viscoelastic substrate, different types of temperature change, applied electric voltage and magnetic potential, and intensity of an external magnetic field on the dispersion curves of nanostructures, are included in the framework of numerous examples.

Book excerpt: Propagation Engineering in Wireless Communications covers the basic principles needed for understanding of radiowaves propagation for common frequency bands used in radio-communications. This book includes descriptions of new achievements and new developements in propagation models for wireless communication. The book is intended to bridge the gap between the theoretical calculations and approaches to the applied procedures needed for radio links design in a proper manner. The authors intention is to emphasize propagation engineering by giving sufficient fundamental information and then going on to explain the use of basic principles together with technical achievements in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transmission Lines and Wave Propagation, Fourth Edition helps readers develop a thorough understanding of transmission line behavior, as well as their advantages and limitations. Developments in research, programs, and concepts since the first edition presented a demand for a version that reflected these advances. Extensively revised, the fourth edition of this bestselling text does just that, offering additional formulas and expanded discussions and references, in addition to a chapter on coupled transmission lines. What Makes This Text So Popular? The first part of the book explores distributed-circuit theory and presents practical applications. Using observable behavior, such as travel time, attenuation, distortion, and reflection from terminations, it analyzes signals and energy traveling on transmission lines at finite velocities. The remainder of the book reviews the principles of electromagnetic field theory, then applies Maxwell's equations for time-varying electromagnetic fields to coaxial and parallel conductor lines, as well as rectangular, circular, and elliptical cylindrical hollow metallic waveguides, and fiber-optic cables. This progressive organization and expanded coverage make this an invaluable reference. With its analysis of coupled lines, it is perfect as a text for undergraduate courses, while graduate students will appreciate it as an excellent source of extensive reference material. This Edition Includes: An overview of fiber optic cables emphasizing the principle types, their propagating modes, and dispersion Discussion of the role of total internal reflection at the core/cladding interface, and the specific application of boundary conditions to a circularly symmetrical propagating mode A chapter on coupled transmission lines, including coupled-line network analysis and basic crosstalk study More information on pulse propagation on lines with skin-effect losses A freeware program available online Solutions manual available with qualifying course adoption

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second work of a set of two volumes on the phenomena of wave propagation in nonreacting and reacting media. The first, entitled Wave Propagation in Solids and Fluids (published by Springer-Verlag in 1988), deals with wave phenomena in nonreacting media (solids and fluids). This book is concerned with wave propagation in reacting media-specifically, in electro magnetic materials. Since these volumes were designed to be relatively self contained, we have taken the liberty of adapting some of the pertinent material, especially in the theory of hyperbolic partial differential equations (concerned with electromagnetic wave propagation), variational methods, and Hamilton-Jacobi theory, to the phenomena of electromagnetic waves. The purpose of this volume is similar to that of the first, except that here we are dealing with electromagnetic waves. We attempt to present a clear and systematic account of the mathematical methods of wave phenomena in electromagnetic materials that will be readily accessible to physicists and engineers. The emphasis is on developing the necessary mathematical tech niques, and on showing how these methods of mathematical physics can be effective in unifying the physics of wave propagation in electromagnetic media. Chapter 1 presents the theory of time-varying electromagnetic fields, which involves a discussion of Faraday's laws, Maxwell's equations, and their appli cations to electromagnetic wave propagation under a variety of conditions.
