Book excerpt: Pure gold! Comprehensive, thought-provoking and paradigm shattering with the power to change lives for the better. Readers' sensitivity and compassion for all fellow animals will be dramatically elevated whilst they learn that all-inclusive compassion also elevates our compassion and treatment of the human animal with enduring, positive consequences as to how we treat each other. Those suffering with bereavement by the loss of an animal companion will be greatly comforted with the deeply moving evidence of their post-death survival clearly documented in these pages while all readers will have a deeper understanding of fellow animals and will never again view their animal companions in a limited way. As we are all animals, human and non-human animals, who are we to say one animal survives death and another does not? After all, humans had tails historically and today human foetuses still have tails in the womb and some human babies are born with tails readily evidenced with medical photographs on the internet. This first generously sized volume is the first instalment in a series which both shockingly evidences animal post-death survival and provides us with the spiritual teachings of non-violence, vegetarianism and all-inclusive compassion of the ancient writers of the Upanishads leading to Hinduism, the long line of ancient Greek vegetarian philosophers, Confucius, the Buddha and Jesus and his first followers. We also look at the vegetarianism since birth of Jesus' brother, James, who led the first followers of Jesus, the vegetarian Jewish-Christians, from Jerusalem, in accordance with Jesus' wishes for several decades before orthodoxy assigned James to the historical scrap heap. Two thousand years of Pauline theology alongside 500 years of Lutheran moulding of thought has shaped our misunderstanding of Jesus' vegetarian teachings. This fascinating and meticulous research has over 30 fantastic pre-publication reviews from professors, international animal charities and fellow authors.

Book excerpt: What was stated with regard to paranormal manifestations in which humans are "agents" or "percipients", namely that such manifestations were observed at all times and among all people, must also be stated for the complementary branch of the same manifestations, in which animals are "agents" or "percipients". Of course, the paranormal manifestations in which animals are the protagonists are confined within more modest limits of extrinsic manifestation compared to those in which human beings are the protagonists, limits that correspond to the intellectual capacity of the animal species in which they are extrinsic, but, in any case, are more remarkable than at first one would have assumed. In them, in fact, we contemplate telepathic episodes in which animals act not only as "percipients" but also as "agents"; as well as episodes of animals perceiving, collectively with man, ghosts or other supernormal manifestations occurring outside of any telepathic coincidence, and episodes in which animals perceive, collectively with man, the manifestations that take place in haunted localities.

Book excerpt: The merry massacres of sport and the horrors of vivisection are most objectionable to occult philosophy. Intelligence is not the prerogative of man; sophistry is. Karma, as the moral law, does not apply to animals, children and the insane, who bear no moral responsibility. But Karma, as the law of cause and effect, applies to all departments of nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal studies is a growing interdisciplinary field that incorporates scholarship from public policy, sociology, religion, philosophy, and many other areas. In essence, it seeks to understand how humans study and conceive of other-than-human animals, and how these conceptions have changed over time, across cultures, and across different ways of thinking. This interdisciplinary introduction to the field boldly and creatively foregrounds the realities of nonhuman animals, as well as the imaginative and ethical faculties that humans must engage to consider our intersection with living beings outside of our species. It also compellingly demonstrates that the breadth and depth of thinking and humility needed to grasp the human-nonhuman intersection has the potential to expand the dualism that currently divides the sciences and humanities. As the first holistic survey of the field, Animal Studies is essential reading for any student of human-animal relationships and for all people who care about the role nonhuman animals play in our society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new paradigm for reading and appreciating animals in literature and addresses how human culture views animals in poetry. Part one sets up a theoretical overview and posits some aesthetic and ethical ideals for transposing animals into art, while part two presents a more focused practical application of these ideals in one strain of animal poetry (as seen in the works of Marianne Moore, José Emilio Pacheco, Gary Snyder, Pattiann Rogers and others). The poetry analyzed in the book is respectfully and non-invasively insightful into animals; it is tinged with a distancing, and a kind of spiritual awe, regarding their existence.

Book excerpt: Do animals have souls? Some of our greatest thinkers—Aristotle, Plato, Thomas Aquinas—and countless animal lovers have been obsessed with this question for thousands of years. Now New York Times bestselling author Jon Katz looks for an answer. With his signature wisdom, humor, and clarity, Katz relates the stories of the animals he lives with on Bedlam Farm and finds remarkable kinships at every turn. Whether it is beloved sheepdog Rose’s brilliant and methodical herding ability, Mother the cat’s keen mousing instincts, or Izzy’s canine compassion toward hospice patients, Katz is mesmerized to see in them individual personas and sparks of self-awareness. Soul of a Dog will resonate with anyone who loves dogs, cats, or other animals—and who wonders about the spirits that animate them and the deepening hold they have on our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western culture has been moving away from its Christian roots for several centuries but the turn from Christianity accelerated in the 20th century. At the core of this decline is a loss of a sense of our own transcendence. Scientific materialism has so seriously impacted our belief in human transcendence that many people find it difficult to believe in God and the human soul. This anti-transcendent perspective has not only cast its spell on the natural sciences, psychology, philosophy, and literature, it has also negatively impacted popular culture through the writings of Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and many others. The warning signs of this loss of transcendence have been expressed by thinkers as diverse as Carl Jung (psychiatrist), Mircea Eliade (historian of religion), Gabriel Marcel (philosopher), C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. These warnings were validated by a 2004 study in the American Journal of Psychiatry which showed that the absence of religion alone was responsible for a marked increase in suicide rates, sense of meaningless, substance abuse, separation from family, and other psychiatric problems. Thus, the loss of transcendence is negatively affecting not only individuals’ sense of happiness, dignity, ideals, virtues, and destiny, but also the culture. Ironically, the evidence for transcendence is greater today than in any other period in history. The problem is – this evidence has not been compiled and propagated. Fr. Spitzer’s book provides a bright light in the midst of this cultural darkness by presenting both traditional and contemporary evidence for God and a transphysical soul from several major sources. He also shows how human consciousness and intelligence is completely special – and cannot be replicated by artificial intelligence or animal consciousness. We are transcendent beings with souls capable of surviving bodily death – self-reflective beings aware of perfect truth, love, goodness, and beauty. We are beings with an unrestricted capacity to know and create science, law, culture, art, music, literature, and so much more. The evidence reveals that we have the dignity of being created in the very image of God, and if we underestimate it, we will undervalue one another, underlive our lives, and underachieve our destiny. This work is the most comprehensive treatment of human transcendence available today.
