Download or read book Projecting the Adjective written by Christopher Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1999. The main argument presented in this volume is that gradable adjectives like bright, dense and short denote measure functions- functions from objects to abstract representations of measurement, or scales and degrees. This proposal is shown to provide a foundation for principled explanations of a wide range of syntactic and semantic properties of gradable adjectives and the constructions in which they appear, ranging from the syntactic distribution of gradable adjectives to the scopal characteristics of comparatives and the empirical effects of adjectival polarity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first typological study of adjective attribution marking. Its focus lies on Northern Eurasia, although it covers many more languages and presents an ontology of morphosyntactic categories relevant to noun phrase structure in general. Book Synopsis An Open Dimension of Meaning: A Semantic Study of Adjectives and Their Combinations by : Jesús Gerardo Martínez del Castillo
Download or read book An Open Dimension of Meaning: A Semantic Study of Adjectives and Their Combinations written by Jesús Gerardo Martínez del Castillo and published by Universidad Almería. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adjectives are lexematic words, functioning at the three levels of linguistic competence. They form a category; they belong to particular languages; and they are elements of free use by speakers. As virtual they belong to the system of the language; as instruments of expression they belong to the norm of the language; and as instruments of communication they belong to discourse. At the same time adjectives are predicates, the expression of a state of affairs provided with the instruments of relation and combination in a sentence or in a phrase. This study analyses the potentialities of expression and interpretation of adjectives.

Book Synopsis Themes in Greek Linguistics by : Irene Philippaki-Warburton
Download or read book Themes in Greek Linguistics written by Irene Philippaki-Warburton and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1994-11-17 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together 65 papers which were presented at this Conference, the aim of which was to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between scholars with expertise in various aspects of the Greek language. For this reason the volume contains the majority of the contributions. It should provide the linguistic community with a comprehensive work presenting the state-of-the-art in Greek Linguistics and covering a wide multidisciplinary spectrum of current research. The papers are organised into six sections. Section I contains the papers of the four invited speakers. George Babiniotis discusses the contribution of linguistic theory to the teaching of Greek, Dimitra Theophanopoulou-Kontou and Angeliki Malikouti-Drachman each present an overview of the relevance of, respectively, syntactic and phonological theories to Greek, and Brian D. Joseph explores a specific theoretical issue, the pro-drop parameter. Section II brings together papers on syntax, semantics and pragmatics which examine theoretical and descriptive issues within current models such as Principles & Parameters, HPSG, Relevance Theory and others. Section III covers phonology and phonetics and also presents research on theoretical issues such as government phonology, the phonology-morphology interface, as well as descriptive issues including the instrumental investigation of selected phonetic phenomena. Section IV covers discourse and style and deals with spoken and written discourse including miscommunication, metaphor and issues on politeness. Section V on variations and extensions consists of papers on Ancient and Modern Greek dialects such as Macedonian, Cypriot, and Pontic, as well as issues on social and geographical varieties, diglossia and language acquisition. Section VI presents papers relating to the use of computers for the analysis, translation and teaching of Greek. Finally, an index of authors, languages and main key words completes the volume.

Book Synopsis Particles and Projections in Irish Syntax by : N. Duffield
Download or read book Particles and Projections in Irish Syntax written by N. Duffield and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-08-31 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of Modern Irish syntax in which the particular of Irish grammar are shown to inform more general theoretical issues, revealing both the scope of Universal Grammar and the limits on syntactic variation. One by one considers all the major structures of Irish and compares them with structures in Germanic, Romance, Semitic, and other language families. Focusing on the concept of functional projection, shows that appealing to the theoretical notions of functional head and of Head Movement, allows for a highly restrictive account of Irish word order. Also analyzes consonant mutation as a form of syntactic representations. Based primarily on Chomsky's early theories, but also draws on his later work and more recent researchers. Of interest to specialists in theoretical syntax and comparative grammar, and perhaps to dedicated scholars of Celtic languages and linguistics. Unlike many civil servant posts, does not require a knowledge of Irish. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Download or read book Verbal Projections written by Hero Janßen and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles examines lexical and grammatical aspects of verbal elements and phrases in the context of recent generative research. General questions concern definitions of grammatical categories, classifications of auxiliaries and particles as functional categories, and problems of economy. Lexical matters range from affixation and category change (participles, gerunds) to semantic representations of specific verb classes (possessive, phrasal and intransitive verbs). The syntactic analyses focus on positional arrangements of aspectual and verbal units (V2, Verb Raising). The data are mainly drawn from English; perspectives on other Germanic languages are included.
