Book excerpt: The C 1 Chemistry Project - officially called Research and Development Program for New Technologies to Produce Basic Industrial Chemicals from Carbon Monoxide and Other Chemicals'' - was conducted in Japan over a seven-year period, from 1980 to 1986, its purpose being to develop alternative ways of producing chemicals from carbon monoxide and/or methanol. The project was implemented with the close cooperation of the academic community, government laboratories and private industry and consisted of two parts: one to develop new technologies to synthesize chemicals from mono-carbon compounds; and the other to develop new technologies to separate carbon monoxide and hydrogen using membranes. This volume gives an overview of the project describing the background, organization, process, results of research, design of plant, and new findings in catalyst chemistry. Chapter 1 deals with the progress of basic research at academic institutions and the National Chemical Laboratory for Industry which supported the joint research of companies. Chapters 2 to 7 are detailed reports on catalyst surveys, bench tests and process development of six synthetic processes.

The homogeneous gas phase chemistry involved in methane oxidation is relevant not only to oxidative coupling but also to synthesis gas and methanol production via partial oxidation. This field is reviewed in a Plenary paper and contributed papers describe developments in catalysts and technology for partial oxidation to synthesis gas and to methanol. An alternative route to synthesis gas from methane currently receiving attention is carbon dioxide reforming. This technology is reviewed in a Plenary paper and recent advances are described in contributed papers. The first detailed account of the Shell SMDS Fischer-Tropsch process for production of transport fuels from natural gas recently commercialised in Malaysia is given in this book. Papers discuss structural aspects of Fischer-Tropsch catalysts, modifications of Fischer-Tropsch catalysts to produce light olefins, and the possibilities of operating a Fischer-Tropsch process off-shore. Methanol as an intermediate in natural gas conversion continues to attract attention, and methanol synthesis and conversion are discussed in contributed papers. To delimit and simplify the discussion of the chemical aspects and the nature of the catalysts involved, the present review is limited to reactions employing homogeneous metal complexes for the direct conversion of syngas to oxygenates and to the hydrocarbonylation of these last to homologous derivatives. Since the previous practically contemporary reviews by Dombek [in Adv. Organomet. Chern. (1983)] on CO hydrogenation and by the present authors [in Asp.Homog.Catal.(Reidel Pu.l984)] on alcohol homologation fully cover the literature up to 1982, here we mainly refer to work done after 1982, and consider the cited reviews as covering the historical development of research in the 1940- 1980 period.
