Book excerpt: "This book addresses the many issues that arise when businesses locate in regions where local religions are different than the predominant religions of the organizations, a factor that potentially affects how the companies operate. It looks at contemporary business issues with a religious dimension that arise for today's managers; it considers larger implications for how to address the contradictory dimensions of religion and business; and it considers how corporations can themselves become institutions that are important to communities in creating a sustainable peace."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: This volume examines the ways in which divination, often through oracular utterances and other mechanisms, linked mortals with the gods, and places the practice within the ancient sociopolitical and religious environment. Whether humans sought knowledge by applying to an oracle through which the god was believed to speak or used soothsayers who interpreted specific signs such as the flight of birds, there was a fundamental desire to know the will of the gods. In many cases, pragmatic concerns – personal, economic or political – can be deduced from the context of the application. Divination and communication with the gods in a post-pagan world has also produced fascinating receptions. The presentation of these processes in monotheistic societies such as early Christian Late Antiquity (where the practice continued through the use of curse tablets) or medieval Europe, and beyond, where the role of religion had changed radically, provides a particular challenge and this topic has been little discussed by scholars. This volume aims to rectify this desideratum by providing the opportunity to address questions related to the reception of Greco-Roman divination, oracles and prophecy, in all media, including literature and film. Several contributions in this volume originated in the 2015 Classics Colloquium held at the University of South Africa and the volume has been augmented with additional contributions.

Book excerpt: An indictment of the apocalyptically limited capitalist imagination and a heartfelt plea for something better before it's too late, Patrick Blagrave's debut collection spans from the time of John the Baptist to any number of potential endings while remaining centered on the everyday realities of life, work, and payment under late-capitalism. In sonnet sequences and in sprawling visions, "Profit - Prophet" is a meditation on class and time and a rejection of the ways corporations, landlords, kings, and bosses of all kinds work to remove alternatives to the future they prescribe.

Book excerpt: "The Prophet of Profit can and will alter your perception and transform your attitude about money and more specifically about profit." Bob Proctor, Co-Founder, Proctor Gallagher Institute A Prophet is a person who is delivering good news and I want you to understand this... Profit is an honorable word. This word should be added to your vocabulary whether you are a business owner, an entrepreneur, a stay at home mom or someone working for a company; it doesn't matter to me, the word is "Profit". This word is so important and yet it is not talked about nearly enough and not given the attention it truly deserves. There are things you want to be doing whether it's expanding your business or maybe on a personal level go on more vacations and the number one reason that is getting in your way is because of this word. Profit. There simply isn't enough. What I am about to share with you, we were not taught in school. I certainly wasn't. I am of the opinion now, that profit is something that should become a top priority in everyones' personal and professional life. This is why 1% of the population earns most of the money in the world! And unfortunately the average individual does not understand how they are doing it. These people know something that the mass majority of the population doesn't. They know how to earn a profit. The principles that I am going to outline in this book has put me in the 1% of income earners in few short years! "Jacquelyn MacKenzie knows what she is talking about. I believe the answer to how to achieve your goals can be found on the pages of this book." Peggy McColl, New York Times Best Selling Author

Book excerpt: The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG), a church of Brazilian origin, has been enormously successful in establishing branches and attracting followers in post-apartheid South Africa. Unlike other Pentecostal Charismatic Churches (PCC), the UCKG insists that relationships with God be devoid of 'emotions', that socialisation between members be kept to a minimum and that charity and fellowship are 'useless' in materialising God's blessings. Instead, the UCKG urges members to sacrifice large sums of money to God for delivering wealth, health, social harmony and happiness. While outsiders condemn these rituals as empty or manipulative, this book shows that they are locally meaningful, demand sincerity to work, have limits and are informed by local ideas about human bodies, agency and ontological balance. As an ethnography of people rather than of institutions, this book offers fresh insights into the mass PCC movement that has swept across Africa since the early 1990s.

Book excerpt: A deft and caustic takedown of the new prophets of profit, from Bill Gates to Oprah As severe environmental degradation, breathtaking inequality, and increasing alienation push capitalism against its own contradictions, mythmaking has become as central to sustaining our economy as profitmaking. Enter the new prophets of capital: Sheryl Sandberg touting the capitalist work ethic as the antidote to gender inequality; John Mackey promising that free markets will heal the planet; Oprah Winfrey urging us to find solutions to poverty and alienation within ourselves; and Bill and Melinda Gates offering the generosity of the 1 percent as the answer to a persistent, systemic inequality. The new prophets of capital buttress an exploitative system, even as the cracks grow more visible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophets have not done well in history -- at least not by ordinary standards: Elijah seemed to be the only one in Israel resisting Baalism. Amos was told to keep silent and go back where he came from. Jeremiah was scorned and imprisoned. John, the Baptist was beheaded, and... Jesus, the greatest of them all, was crucified. By ordinary standards the prophets have not done well because, as Jesus said, we ignore or kill the messengers of God. And yet it is the extraordinary standards of the prophets that intrigue us, inspire us, and stimulate our minds and consciences to God's ways and thoughts. Because of their extraordinary standards the prophets continue to shape us and history. In this challenging Advent-Christmas book, Maurice A. Fetty reminds us again how it is important to "profit from prophets." Maurice A. Fetty is Senior Minister of the Congregational Church of Manhasset (United Church of Christ) in Manhasset, New York. He has also served churches in Grand Rapids, Michigan; Minneapolis; East Harlem; and Brooklyn. Fetty holds the Master of Sacred Theology Degree from Union Theological Seminary and the Master of Arts Degree from Christian Theological Seminary. In addition to numerous articles he has authored several books, including Putting Your Life On The Line; Sex, Love And Marriage; and The Divine Advocacy.

Book excerpt: The million-copy bestselling introduction to the healing ministry, re-issued with a beautiful new cover. Does healing happen today? Why is there prejudice against the healing ministry? Why are some people not healed? These topical and vital questions are just some of the issues addressed by Francis MacNutt in Healing. A wideranging and broad-based overview, it is essential reading for all involved in the healing ministry. 'Prayer for healing is so central to the gospel, ' writes MacNutt, 'that it should be an integral part of the life of every community of believers. My heart cries out to see it restored to the place it had in the early Christian church.
