Book Synopsis The Prophet's Whistle by : George Archer
Download or read book The Prophet's Whistle written by George Archer and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prophet's Whistle is a study of the ancient, nonliterary features of the Quran. George Archer uses observations from the anthropologies of living oral cultures, the cognitive sciences of literacy, and the study of other dead oral cultures. When the Quran appeared in the seventh century, it was a vocal recital performed by an unlettered man named Muhammad. The Prophet's Whistle shows that the thought systems of the Quran are oral, through and through, but by the end of the life of its Prophet, the Quran likewise hints at a personal and cultural embrace of writing and the mindsets of literate people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the sources and evolution of personal authority in one Islamic society Sufi Heirs of the Prophet explores the multifaceted development of personal authority in Islamic societies by tracing the transformation of one mystical sufi lineage in colonial India, the Naqshbandiyya. Arthur F. Buehler isolates four sources of personal authority evident in the practices of the Naqshbandiyya—lineage, spiritual traveling, status as a Prophetic exemplar, and the transmission of religious knowledge—to demonstrate how Muslim religious leaders have exercised charismatic leadership through their association with the most compelling of personal Islamic symbols, the Prophet Muhammad. Buehler clarifies the institutional structure of sufism, analyzes overlapping configurations of personal sufi authority, and details how and why revivalist Indian Naqshbandis abandoned spiritual practices that had sustained their predecessors for more than five centuries. He looks specifically at the role of Jama'at 'Ali Shah (d. 1951) to explain current Naqshbandi practices.

Book Synopsis Henry Stubbe & The Prophet Muhammad: Challenging Misrepresentation by : Professor Nabil Matar
Download or read book Henry Stubbe & The Prophet Muhammad: Challenging Misrepresentation written by Professor Nabil Matar and published by AMSS UK. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of medieval and early modern European writings about the Prophet Muhammad oe shows a consistent pattern of misunderstanding. Until the nineteenth century, only one writer challenged that history: the English physician Henry Stubbe (1632–1676), author of “Originall & Progress of Mahometanism.” Neither an Orientalist nor a theologian, Henry Stubbe approached Islam as a historian of religion, perhaps the first in early modern Europe, arguing that the study of another religion should rely on historical evidence derived from indigenous documents, and not on foreign accounts. The result of his new historiographical approach was a “Copernican revolution” in the study of the figure of Muhammad, the Qur’an, and Islam. It shifted the focus from faith to scholarship. Had his treatise been published, the course of Western understanding of Islam might have been different.

This book was released on 2005-05-05 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author's Preface: [This work] is designed to give the reader a clear view of the reality of Ezekiel, and in this grand prophetical figure to bring before his mind at the same time the nature of prophecy in general.... Ezekiel prophesied in a time of great decision, in a time of the 'iniquity of the end,' in which sin was ripe, and with it punishment. He is exactly the prophet for our times. Whosoever penetrates into him will be deeply stirred by his earnestness, and will feel himself impelled to exert all his powers, that the crisis on which we have entered may be brought to a prosperous issue. At the same time, however, if it should please God to bring great sifting judgments upon us, to pull down what He has built up, and to root out what He has planted, we may gain from Him an immoveable confidence in the final victory of the kingdom of God, who kills and makes alive, wounds and heals, and who, after He has sent the darkest cloud, at length remembers His covenant, and displays His shining bow.
