Book Synopsis Making Choices about Hydrogen by : Lynn Krieger Mytelka
Download or read book Making Choices about Hydrogen written by Lynn Krieger Mytelka and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2008 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, the emergence of a hydrogen economy and the speed with which it will arrive have been vigorously debated. As a disruptive technology, dominant designs for the production, storage and distribution of hydrogen have not yet been established. Neither have performance characteristics been achieved to compete with the existing combustion engine, though the efficiency and durability of hydrogen fuel cells are improving. This publication highlights the uncertainties involved in making choices about hydrogen and fuel cells in planning the development policies on national energy, environment and transport sector.--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Human Resources for the Non-HR Manager by : Carol T. Kulik
Download or read book Human Resources for the Non-HR Manager written by Carol T. Kulik and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2004-06-30 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Resources for the Non-HR Manager appeals to anyone interested in management issues. The book explains why human resource issues are increasing the responsibilities of front-line managers rather than the HR department. Chapters present the basics of HR including the fundamentals of hiring, performance appraisal, reward systems, and disciplinary systems, so that any manager--regardless of his or her background or functional area--can approach these parts of the job with confidence. The book also covers the latest developments in equal opportunity law and describes the manager's responsibilities in controlling sexual harassment and managing diverse employees, including older workers and employees with disabilities. Each chapter's material is firmly grounded in the current HR academic literature, but the book's friendly, conversational tone conveys basic principles of good practice without technical jargon. Designed to make the material more accessible and personally relevant, the book includes the following special features: *Manager's Checkpoints--a series of questions that help the reader apply the material to his or her own organizational context; *Boxes that describe real-life examples of how companies respond to HR challenges; *For Further Reading--references to articles published in outlets that bridge the academic-practitioner divide; *Manager's Knots--presented in a question-and-answer format, these describe typical managerial problems, take the reader into some of the gray, ambiguous areas of HR, and suggest ways to apply the chapter material to real-life managerial dilemmas.

Book Synopsis Energy Policies for Sustainable Development Strategies by : Nnaemeka Vincent Emodi
Download or read book Energy Policies for Sustainable Development Strategies written by Nnaemeka Vincent Emodi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a number of long-term energy scenarios are developed for Nigeria considering the impact of vital factors that may influence energy policies in the country’s future energy system. The energy scenarios were developed through the Long-Range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) model. The model identified the future energy demand and supply pattern using a least-cost combination of technology options while limiting the emission of greenhouse gases. The book presents four scenarios, and key parameters considered include GDP, households, population, urbanization and the growth rates of energy-intensive sectors. Further, it highlights the findings of the cost-benefit analysis, which reveal the costs of implementing selected policies and strategies in Nigeria, including those focusing on energy efficiency and fuel/technology switching. The book also discusses the application of the LEAP-OSeMOSYS Model in order to identify lowest-cost power plants for electricity generation. Some sustainable strategies that can ensure a low carbon development in Nigeria are also explored on the basis of successful country cases in relation to the Nigerian LEAP model. As such, the book will help policy makers devise energy and sustainable strategies to achieve low carbon development in Nigeria.

Book Synopsis Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons by : Saranya Kuppusamy
Download or read book Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons written by Saranya Kuppusamy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “total petroleum hydrocarbons” (TPHs) is used for any mixture of several hundred hydrocarbons found in crude oil, and they represent the sum of volatile petroleum hydrocarbons and extractable petroleum hydrocarbons. The petrol-range organics include hydrocarbons from C6 to C10, while diesel-range organics are C10-C28 hydrocarbons. Environmental pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons is one of the major global concerns, particularly in oil-yielding countries. In fact, there are more than five million potentially contaminated areas worldwide that represent, in general, a lost economic opportunity and a threat to the health and well-being of humans and the environment. Petroleum-contaminated sites constitute almost one-third of the total sites polluted with chemicals around the globe. The land contamination caused by industrialization was recognized as early as the 1960s, but less than a tenth of potentially contaminated lands have been remediated due to the nature of the contamination, cost, technical impracticability, and insufficient land legislation and enforcement. This book is the first single source that provides comprehensive information on the different aspects of TPHs, such as sources and range of products, methods of analysis, fate and bioavailability, ecological implications including impact on human health, potential approaches for bioremediation such as risk-based remediation, and regulatory assessment procedures for TPH-contaminated sites. As such, it is a valuable resource for researchers, graduate students, technicians in the oil industry and remediation practitioners, as well as policy makers.
