Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bee-Keeping in North Carolina, Vol. 29: January, 1908 There is no State organization in which our bee-keepers meet to exchange views; there is no system of inspection by which the apiaries may be brought to a higher standard; the bee-keeping magazines have but a limited circulation with us, and there is nowhere in the State a practical bee-keeper whose special duty it is to encourage or protect this industry. In order to see if we could reach any of the fundamental facts underlying this industry in the State, the writer - though not an actual beekeeper - began an inquiry into the industry in the summer of 1905, which has been continued (with interruptions) to the pres ent time. A carefully prepared sheet of questions was sent out, and all data received in reply have been carefully recorded. We have left out of account any who have less than ten colonies of bees, so that the data which we have is from actual commercial bee-keepers. We have on record replies from about 360 persons, representing a total of colonies, located in seventy-eight counties - an average of 134 colonies for each county heard from, or an average of nearly 108 colonies for each and every county in the entire State. We feel that with such an amount of data we are warranted in deducting some conclusions regarding the industry in the State as a whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping: A Discussion of the Life of the Honeybee and of the Production of Honey The present book is the result of an effort to present a logical discussion of the various phases of the complex subject of beekeeping. It was not planned as a book of rules to which one may go for directions for each day's work, for beekeeping cannot be treated correctly in such a way. The activities of bees vary during the seasons and no two localities present to the bees and their owners exactly the same environmental conditions, so that the successful beekeeper is one who has a knowledge of the activities of bees, whereby he can interpret what he sees in the hives from day to day, and who can mold the instincts of the bees to his convenience and profit It has seemed desirable in the early chapters to discuss bees as they exist without man's interference, thus giving the foundation on which the practice of beekeeping rests. The beekeeper is not especially interested in the anatomy of the bee and, while it is necessary to use illustrations of various organs and to describe them briefly, an effort has been made to treat the bee as a living animal and to have the discussion deal with physiology and especially with activities, in so far as investigations have thrown light on these processes. In the preparation of the chapters devoted to the management of the apiary, an effort has been made to present the various systems of manipulations in such a way that the underlying principles shall be evident, rather than to attempt to describe each system as if it were separate. One of the proudest days of his whole life was the first time he was permitted to cut a limb from an apple tree on which a swarm had clustered. With a lifetime of intimate association with the bees and a wide acquaintance among the bee-keepers of the nation, it may not be regarded as surprising that he should undertake to set down in this book the information gleaned from so many sources. In no other pursuit, perhaps, do the originators' names cling to the articles of equipment or methods of manipulation, as in bee-keeping. Most of the articles of equipment, as well as methods in common use, bear the name of the man with whom they originated - the Langstroth hive, Porter bee escape, Alexander feeder, Root smoker, Miller queen cage, and so on throughout the entire field of apiculture. So firmly established has this custom become, that a writer is in danger of being accused of plagiarism if he describes a method without the originator's name in connection. While the author has followed the usual custom, in the main, some methods have become so generally adopted that it hardly seems necessary to continue the practice. It is not with any intention of claiming as original any of these plans that the originator's name has occasionally been omitted, but rather because it does not seem needful with matters so fully credited already. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of Pollen Traps and Pollen Supplements in Developing Honeybee Colonies The bees usually require several days to become accustomed to the trap. The pollen trapped during the first week will be below normal, thus making it desirable to leave the traps on the same hives rather than shifting them to different hives in the apiary. Colonies equipped with pollen traps will rear some brood but brood rearing will be curtailed. They may be given combs of pollen from other colonies to keep up their production, but good colonies at the beginning of the season will survive and may produce some honey. They can be united at the end of the season. Figure 6 shows a pollen tray, about two-thirds full of pollen, re moved from the trap. The pollen should be removed every 2 or 3 days under ordinary conditions and more often when the humidity is high or when the pollen is unusually moist. The pollen should be Spread out to a depth of to inch for air drying. To prevent molding, moist pollen can be dried rapidly in an improvised oven heated with electric light bulbs The oven may be constructed from a large fiber carton equipped with a rack to support five or six trays which consist of wooden rims covered with cheesecloth. The pollen should be Spread in a thin layer on the trays to allow the warm air which is generated at the bottom to pass through each tray and escape from an Opening in the top of the oven. For most managed and wild pollinator species, however, population trends have not been assessed because populations have not been monitored over time. In addition, for wild species with demonstrated declines, it is often difficult to determine the causes or consequences of their decline. This report outlines priorities for research and monitoring that are needed to improve information on the status of pollinators and establishes a framework for conservation and restoration of pollinator species and communities.
