Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the introduction of corrugated metal pipe in the late 1890s, there has been a continuing interest in proper pipe usage for maintenance purposes. Early methods of design were truly "rule of thumb" and were developed through "failure criteria." Refinements of these methods resulted in a set of systems that were very effective in dealing with pipe problems. However, the building of the Institute Highway System brought with it a need to develop new approaches that would incorporate the latest soil-structure interaction theories and be applicable to the larger structures, higher embankments, and new materials. Better inspection and construction control are considered requisite to the utilization of more refined theories. Practice in the design and construction of culverts continues to improve, but, because many organizations have not been able to keep up with or apply the latest theories, the Highway Research Board Committee on Subsurface Soil-Structure Interaction organized a symposium to assess the state of the art and to delineate problems needing further attention.

The recommended design methodology is illustrated for the horizontally oriented buried cylinder. A parallel approach is suggested for buried structures of other configurations. It is suggested that analysis of resulting designs be accomplished by the finite element method. Illustrations of two-dimensional and three-dimensional solutions by this method are given. (Author).

The materials studied included three low-density concretes, two foamed plastics, foamed glass, and foamed sulfur. Each material was investigated for its strength-deformation characteristics and limitations, the effects of attack by groundwaters of different compositions, the effects of freezing and thawing, constrained consolidation, permeability, cyclic loading, constrained modulus of elasticity, brittleness, compatibility, and resistance to attack by fungi and bacteria. Book excerpt: The report describes a definitive experimental study in which shock-induced square-wave pulses in soil were observed to give way to decaying pulse shapes, as in a gas shock tube, and rapid attenuation of peak stress occurred thereafter due to nonlinear propagation in the rarefaction. In the study three different duration pulses were applied to an 8-ft vertical column of granular material confined under boundary conditions leading to a stress-strain (Sigma - Epsilon) behavior described by d to the 2nd power Sigma/d Epsilon to the 2nd power> 0, i.e., a strain-hardening type of response. Applied stresses ranged from 50 to 500 psi. The report describes a simple modification to be applied to the prediction procedure described in the first report of this series in order to take into account, to a first approximation, the nonlinear propagation of unloading waves that occurs in real media because of nonlinear stress-strain behavior in the unloading branch. The procedure which predicts stress and motion histories based on the conservation laws, a measured constitutive relationship, and the applied pressure-time profile, is demonstrated by predicting the entire sequence of an experimentally observed square-wave pulse transformation into a decaying pulse.
