This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underactuated multibody systems are intriguing mechatronic systems, as they posses fewer control inputs than degrees of freedom. Some examples are modern light-weight flexible robots and articulated manipulators with passive joints. This book investigates such underactuated multibody systems from an integrated perspective. This includes all major steps from the modeling of rigid and flexible multibody systems, through nonlinear control theory, to optimal system design. The underlying theories and techniques from these different fields are presented using a self-contained and unified approach and notation system. Subsequently, the book focuses on applications to large multibody systems with multiple degrees of freedom, which require a combination of symbolical and numerical procedures. Finally, an integrated, optimization-based design procedure is proposed, whereby both structural and control design are considered concurrently. Each chapter is supplemented by illustrated examples.

Book excerpt: Explosion Blast Response of Composites contains key information on the effects of explosions, shock waves, and detonation products (e.g. fragments, shrapnel) on the deformation and damage to composites. The book considers the blast response of laminates and sandwich composites, along with blast mitigation of composites (including coating systems and energy absorbing materials). Broken down under the following key themes: Introduction to explosive blast response of composites, Air explosion blast response of composites, Underwater explosion blast response of composites, and High strain rate and dynamic properties of composites, the book deals with an important and contemporary topic due to the extensive use of composites in applications where explosive blasts are an ever-present threat, such as military aircraft, armoured vehicles, naval ships and submarines, body armour, and other defense applications. In addition, the growing use of IEDs and other types of bombs used by terrorists to attack civilian and military targets highlights the need for this book. Many terrorist attacks occur in subways, trains, buses, aircraft, buildings, and other civil infrastructure made of composite materials. Designers, engineers and terrorist experts need the essential information to protect civilians, military personnel, and assets from explosive blasts. Focuses on key aspects, including both modeling, analysis, and experimental work Written by leading international experts from academia, defense agencies, and other organizations Timely book due to the extensive use of composites in areas where explosive blasts are an ever-present threat in military applications

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers and microprocessors are indispensable in modern technical systems, their deployment spanning the domains automotive, railway, aerospace, and transportation, security, energy supply, telecommunication, critical infrastructures and process ind- tries. They perform tasks that a few decades ago were very difficult if not impossible. As they perform these tasks with increasing efficiency, more and more tasks are shifted from hardware to software, which means that the dependability of computer systems becomes crucial for the safety, security and reliability of technical systems. With the so-called “embedded systems” (becoming more and more intelligent, networked and co-operating with each other, with humans and the environment) computers have invaded all aspects of daily life. New paradigms have arisen, like ubiquitous computing, systems-of-systems, energy and resource awareness, enormous complexity issues and the like, requiring a more holistic systems view as well. th So, after 31 years of SAFECOMP, the emphasis of the 29 event is on critical - bedded systems, which are almost omnipresent. Their impact on our lives, risks and challenges are often not well understood (underestimated or exaggerated). The p- mary issue is to cope with complexity, new failure modes and resource management, due to shrinking feature size, multi-core systems and management of multiple variants, while maintaining dependability properties and robustness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As software systems become increasingly ubiquitous, issues of dependability become ever more crucial. Given that solutions to these issues must be considered from the very beginning of the design process, it is clear that dependability and security have to be addressed at the architectural level. This book, as well as its six predecessors, was born of an effort to bring together the research communities of software architectures, dependability, and security. This state-of-the-art survey contains expanded, peer-reviewed papers based on selected contributions from the Workshop on Architecting Dependable Systems (WADS 2009), held at the International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN 2009), as well as a number of invited papers written by renowned experts in the area. The 13 papers are organized in topical sections on: mobile and ubiquitous systems, architecting systems, fault management, and experience and vision.

Book excerpt: Semantic agent systems are about the integration of the semantic Web, software agents, and multi-agent systems technologies. Like in the past (e.g. biology and informatics yielding bioinformatics) a whole new perspective is emerging with semantic agent systems. In this context, the semantic Web is a Web of semantically linked data which aims to enable man and machine to execute tasks in tandem. Here, software agents in a multi-agent system as delegates of humans are endowed with power to use semantically linked data. This edited book “Semantic Agent Systems: Foundations and Applications” proposes contributions on a wide range of topics on foundations and applications written by a selection of international experts. It first introduces in an accessible style the nature of semantic agent systems. Then it explores with numerous illustrations new frontiers in software agent technology. “Semantic Agent Systems: Foundations and Applications” is recommended for scientists, experts, researchers, and learners in the field of artificial intelligence, the semantic Web, software agents, and multi-agent systems technologies.
