The approaches in this volume—collectively called SCOT (after the volume's title) have since broadened their scope, and twenty-five years after the publication of this book, it is difficult to think of a technology that has not been studied from a SCOT perspective and impossible to think of a technology that cannot be studied that way.

Discipline-Based Education Research is based on a 30-month study built on two workshops held in 2008 to explore evidence on promising practices in undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. This book asks questions that are essential to advancing DBER and broadening its impact on undergraduate science teaching and learning. The book provides empirical research on undergraduate teaching and learning in the sciences, explores the extent to which this research currently influences undergraduate instruction, and identifies the intellectual and material resources required to further develop DBER. Discipline-Based Education Research provides guidance for future DBER research. INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS. Submissions describing the practical application of fracture mechanics and damage tolerance analysis to the determination of useful operating lives. x ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS. Papers dealing with engineering materials and/or components exposed to aggressive environments, with and without temperature effects. The response was gratifying. Leading experts responded; the organizers of the conference are grateful for the large number of excellent contributions.
