Book Synopsis Technology for a Quieter America by : National Academy of Engineering
Download or read book Technology for a Quieter America written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposure to noise at home, at work, while traveling, and during leisure activities is a fact of life for all Americans. At times noise can be loud enough to damage hearing, and at lower levels it can disrupt normal living, affect sleep patterns, affect our ability to concentrate at work, interfere with outdoor recreational activities, and, in some cases, interfere with communications and even cause accidents. Clearly, exposure to excessive noise can affect our quality of life. As the population of the United States and, indeed, the world increases and developing countries become more industrialized, problems of noise are likely to become more pervasive and lower the quality of life for everyone. Efforts to manage noise exposures, to design quieter buildings, products, equipment, and transportation vehicles, and to provide a regulatory environment that facilitates adequate, cost-effective, sustainable noise controls require our immediate attention. Technology for a Quieter America looks at the most commonly identified sources of noise, how they are characterized, and efforts that have been made to reduce noise emissions and experiences. The book also reviews the standards and regulations that govern noise levels and the federal, state, and local agencies that regulate noise for the benefit, safety, and wellness of society at large. In addition, it presents the cost-benefit trade-offs between efforts to mitigate noise and the improvements they achieve, information sources available to the public on the dimensions of noise problems and their mitigation, and the need to educate professionals who can deal with these issues. Noise emissions are an issue in industry, in communities, in buildings, and during leisure activities. As such, Technology for a Quieter America will appeal to a wide range of stakeholders: the engineering community; the public; government at the federal, state, and local levels; private industry; labor unions; and nonprofit organizations. Implementation of the recommendations in Technology for a Quieter America will result in reduction of the noise levels to which Americans are exposed and will improve the ability of American industry to compete in world markets paying increasing attention to the noise emissions of products.

Book Synopsis Changing the Conversation by : National Academy of Engineering
Download or read book Changing the Conversation written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-06-10 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the United States continue to lead the world in innovation? The answer may hinge in part on how well the public understands engineering, a key component of the 'innovation engine'. A related concern is how to encourage young people-particularly girls and under-represented minorities-to consider engineering as a career option. Changing the Conversation provides actionable strategies and market-tested messages for presenting a richer, more positive image of engineering. This book presents and discusses in detail market research about what the public finds most appealing about engineering-as well as what turns the public off. Changing the Conversation is a vital tool for improving the public image of engineering and outreach efforts related to engineering. It will be used by engineers in professional and academic settings including informal learning environments (such as museums and science centers), engineering schools, national engineering societies, technology-based corporations that support education and other outreach to schools and communities, and federal and state agencies and labs that do or promote engineering, technology, and science.

Book Synopsis Uncertainty Quantification by : Ralph C. Smith
Download or read book Uncertainty Quantification written by Ralph C. Smith and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of uncertainty quantification is evolving rapidly because of increasing emphasis on models that require quantified uncertainties for large-scale applications, novel algorithm development, and new computational architectures that facilitate implementation of these algorithms. Uncertainty Quantification: Theory, Implementation, and Applications provides readers with the basic concepts, theory, and algorithms necessary to quantify input and response uncertainties for simulation models arising in a broad range of disciplines. The book begins with a detailed discussion of applications where uncertainty quantification is critical for both scientific understanding and policy. It then covers concepts from probability and statistics, parameter selection techniques, frequentist and Bayesian model calibration, propagation of uncertainties, quantification of model discrepancy, surrogate model construction, and local and global sensitivity analysis. The author maintains a complementary web page where readers can find data used in the exercises and other supplementary material.

Book Synopsis Smart Material Structures by : H. Thomas Banks
Download or read book Smart Material Structures written by H. Thomas Banks and published by Elsevier Masson. This book was released on 1996 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, mathematical and computational investigations pertinent to scientific and engineering issues in the emerging field of smart materials are presented. A brief survey of basic mechanisms and questions related to various components (piezoelectric and electrostrictive elements, magnetostrictive transducers, ER fluids, shape memory alloys, fiber optics) of smart material structures is given. Attention is then focused on piezoceramic actuators and sensors. Care is given to the precise modeling of piezoceramic patch contributions (passive and active) in structures such as thin shells, plates and beams. Mathematical foundations for well-posedness, approximation, inverse problem and parameter estimation, and feedback control methodologies are discussed. Applications, including experimental validation of the efficacy of the ideas, are presented in the context of damage detection and characterization in structures, and in active control of structural vibrations and structure-borne noise.

Book Synopsis Standalone Renewable Energy Systems by : Rodolfo Dufo-López
Download or read book Standalone Renewable Energy Systems written by Rodolfo Dufo-López and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standalone (off-grid) renewable energy systems supply electricity in places where there is no access to a standard electrical grid. These systems may include photovoltaic generators, wind turbines, hydro turbines or any other renewable electrical generator. Usually, this kind of system includes electricity storage (commonly lead-acid batteries, but also other types of storage can be used). In some cases, a backup generator (usually powered by fossil fuel, diesel or gasoline) is part of the hybrid system. The modelling of the components, the control of the system and the simulation of the performance of the whole system are necessary to evaluate the system technically and economically. The optimization of the sizing and/or the control is also an important task in this kind of system.
