Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following proceedings contains most of the contributions given at Orbis Scientiae 1981. As has become customary during the past few years, the organizers and moderators have attempted to strike a balance between reviews of the status of experimental and theoretical developments during the preceding year. We are very pleased that experimentalists representing the critical developments in new accelerator plans, neutrino oscillations, proton decay, and decay schemes of the upsilon, have seen fit to enlighten at first hand their theoretical colleagues. We believe that this interaction can be of great benefit to both groups. The reports of theorists on many of the key theoretical advances by the practitioners themselves is a particularly satisfying feature of this series of conferences and is a tribute to the care and wisdom of the session moderators. Although it has not been a customary editorial practice, we feel that it is particularly appropriate to point out that the 1981 recipient of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Prize was Professor Frederick Reines, of University of California, Irvine, for his pioneering experiments which first experimentally estab lished the existence of the neutrino. The flurry of activit- experimental and theoretical - generated by recent evidence for massive neutrinos is amply reflected in the contents of this volume. The enthusiasm and skill of Mrs. Helga S. Billings and Mrs. Susan L. Maxon in the organization and the running of the con ference, as well as in the preparation of these proceedings, is gratefully acknowledged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reviews in this volume address advances in three important but diverse areas of nuc1ear physics. Within nuc1ear physics it would be hard to provide a wider range of subject matter, style, or treatment. The first artic1e, on quark bags, is a pedagogic artic1e intended to make accessible to the nuc1ear physics community important new ideas from partic1e physics. The second, on interacting boson models, reviews a very interesting and controversial new approach to some of the central problems of nuc1ear spectroscopy. The third, on relativistic heavy-ion physics, is a guide to the extensive literature on a new subject which has been fuH of great expectations, puz zling data, and speculative ideas. In the past decade, partic1e theorists' understanding of the structure of hadrons has undergone a revolution strikingly similar to that brought about in nuc1ear physics by the introduction of the Iluc1ear sheH model. Like the sheH model, the bag model of hadrons phenomenologically specifies an interior region in which constituents are confined and described by single-partic1e wave functions that are only weakly perturbed by residual interactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During August 1980 a group of 85 physicists from 57 laboratories in 21 countries met in Erice for the 18th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented were Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Czechoslovakia, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Yugoslavia. The School was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MFI) , the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRST) , the Regional Sicilian Government (ERS), and the Weizmann Institute of Science. The programme of the School was mainly devoted to a review of the very low energy corner where we are all working at present, and to a discussion of what the future could be for subnuclear physics before the end of this century. On the theoretical front, the highlight of this Course was the lectures by S. Adler on the non-local U(2) gauge theory. The non locality at the colour-level should disappear at the colour-singlet level -- where all particles we know of exist and should the- fore not scare those who do not like the idea of giving up this basic principle of quantum field theory: locality. On the other hand, the great dream of producing the world where we live, starting from the simplest symmetry group U(2), now seems to have a good chance of becoming a reality.
