Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems and Exercises in Accounting In a few cases, the instructor will notice, a question or prob lem given is slightly anticipative of material which has not been reached at the corresponding pomt in the Principles. Such exercises have been inserted deliberately. At times, it is believed, the student can be stimulated to further effort by being confronted with a query or a problem which, as far as the ground he has cov ered explicitly is concerned, is just a little out of his reach. In general, however, the sequence of material in the two books is identical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accounting Problems Intermediate This book of exercises in accounting is the result of work by the authors extending over several years in collecting and pre paring problems and exercises of an intermediate grade which would provide the instructor of accounting with a variety of laboratory material of a practical and teachable character. It should be understood that the book is essentially a compilation of problems and exercises illustrated by model statements of various types, rather than a presentation of accounting theory. It is, therefore, intended to be used in conjunction with a text on accounting theory or to supplement the instructor's own lectures on the subject. The work is adapted to second year students or to those even further advanced in their accounting course. It is divided into two parts. Part I consists of more than forty model forms of financial statements and reports with comments and interpretations. These serve the purpose of familiarizing the student with forms of statements and reports adaptable to representative busi nesses and institutions, and at the same time they aim to present within certain limits the standardized practice in form and arrangement of such statements. The published balance sheets of representative industrial concerns of this country and Great Britain which are reproduced should broaden the horizon of the student, add to his knowledge of accounts and accounting terms, and serve to develop his power to interpret statements from the point of view of the business executive, banker, and investor. Part II consists of some four hundred problems and questions in accounting theory classified and arranged to correspond to the topics in accounting which would as a general practice receive consideration in the intermediate state of the student's work. Much more care and thought have been given to the selection of these problems than is apparent on the surface. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Student's Handbook of Accounting: Solutions to Questions in Theory of Accounts, Practical Accounting, and Auditing Contained in Elements of Accounting Elements of Accounting was published in June, 1913. As stated at that time, it was written mainly to bridge the gap between bookkeeping and accounting. That it has filled a real need is evidenced by the friendly reviews and comments of accountants, teachers, and lay critics. The hearty reception which has been accorded to it has necessitated three editions within a period of about a year and a half. At the request of many students and teachers, the publishers arranged with the author to produce authoritative solutions to the practical exercises appended to the respective chapters in Elements of Accounting. To enhance the value of these solutions they have been cast into what may be termed C. P. A. Form. Moreover, there have been included references for those who wish to make a further study of the points treated in the different solutions. This supplementary research material has been included in the belief that it will be welcomed by the ambi tious student. This handbook should be used in connection with Elements of Accounting. Such correlation, however, is not absolutely essential because of the fact that the exercises of the accounting text have been incorporated in the present volume. For obvious pedagogic reasons, each question is immediately followed by its answer or solution. The solutions to Groups II will probably be employed by many as much for the forms displayed and illus tratad, as because they constitute solutions to specific practical accounting problems. The entire volume may be employed as a special or supplementary text in Accounting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Accounting Problems: With Explanatory Notes While the accounting problems peculiar to partnerships Offer no principles that are essentially new, yet in no branch of accounting does the application of those principles require any more complete knowledge of all details and more accurate and logical reasoning in order to arrive at equitable results. In fact, part hership adjustments and liquidations as a rule require more of the mathematical ability to do abstract reason ing than a technical training in accounting. In other words, most partnership problems would be easily possible of solution if one did not understand even the meaning Of debit and credit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics for the Accountant There is a great deal to be said in favor of the inclusion of actuarial problems and we believe that the need for knowledge of this kind will increase as time goes on. Heretofore there have been many accountants who have had practically no need to exercise any knowledge which they have possessed of actuarial matters, but with the growth of accounting work and the broadening of its scope, there must be many problems which can be solved at a great saving of time and effort if the accountant be able to deal with them with the advantage of actuarial knowledge. This requirement seems to imply a general study of com pound interest and its application to those problems which are commonly solved by simple interest. It is axiomatic that every dollar in the business world is at work; it is earning other dollars either for its owner or for someone else. At the end of every fiscal period all these earnings, after deduction of expenses, should become capital, and the same or a larger income rate should be earned on this increased capital. Such studies are compound interest and present worth, with the various aspects of interest rates; annuities, immediate, due or deferred; their amount and present worth; sinking funds and various related prob lems in valuation of assets; amortization; bond valuation in its many aspects. Three themes run throughout. First, the accounting system is profitably thought of as a library of financial statistics. Answers to a variety of questions are unlikely to be found in prefabricated fonnat, but valuable infonnation awaits those equipped to in the accounting library is most interrogate the library. Second, the infonnation unlikely to be the only infonnation at the manger's disposal. So knowing how to combine accounting and nonaccounting bits of infonnation is an important, indeed indispensable, managerial skill. Finally, the role of a professional manager is emphasized. This is an individual with skill, talent, and imagination, an individual who brings professional quality skills to the ta sk of managing. This book also makes demands on the reader. It assumes the reader has had prior exposure to financial accounting, economics, statistics, and the economics of uncertainty (in the fonn of risk aversion and decision trees). A modest acquaintance with strategic, or equilibrium, modeling is also presumed, as is patience with abstract notation. The hook does not make deep mathematical demands on the reader. An acquaintance with linearprogramming and the ability to take a simple derivative are presumed. The major prerequisite is a tolerance for (if not a predisposition toward) abstract notation. This st yle and list of prerequisites are not matters of taste or author imposition.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consolidated Statements for Holding Company and Subsidiaries The book contains a discussion of underlying principles, illustrations showing the procedure of preparing consolidated working papers and statements, and supplementary exercises and problems to be solved by the reader. On several phases of consolidated statements there is some conflict of opinion as to the proper procedure and considerable variation in practice. This 13 particularly true in the matters of minority interest in a subsidiary with a deficit, negative goodwill, and reserves for unrealized profit when there are minority interests. Where practice has not been standardized the fact 18 commented upon, the different methods of procedure are discussed, and the method which seems to the author to be correct in principle is indicated. It scarcely seems necessary to remind the reader that ac counting principles and income tax regulations do not always coincide. Taxable net income and invested capital do not always agree with the figures shown in the revenue statement and the balance sheet, yet these statements are the basis of a corporation's tax return, and the consolidated profit and loss statement and balance sheet are the basis of a consolidated return. This book 18 not an interpretation of the regulations pertaining to consolidated returns, but 13 an explanation of the accounting principles underlying the consolidated state ments which must be submitted in support of the return. The author wishes to acknowledge his obligation to his friend Roy Hall, who read the manuscript and offered helpful criticisms and suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Bookkeeping: Complete Course Illustrating the Journal Method of Closing the Ledger The modern business world demands of its employees economy and efficiency, and the commercial training in our schools, to be successful, must meet this demand of' the business world by texts whose value is educational as well as practical. Such a text the authors have tried to furnish in this volume. Their aim has been an elementary book which shall present a simple, practical study of the basic facts of book keeping in a manner that will command the interest of the pupil and that will impress upon his mind the methods and practices of the office as well as the duties and technical knowledge and vocabulary of the bookkeeper and the accountant. The grading and development of the work, its classification, the terms used, and the forms adopted all have the same aim, the making of an efficient, well-informed bookkeeper. To apply a principle is of far more practical value than the ability to define it, and in this text principles are described and applied by the pupils before they are formally defined for them. This inductive method, characteristic of the entire book, stimulates the pupil to think for himself and to cultivate the self-reliance and independence so univer sally demanded of him. The numerous exercises and illustrations used in the approach to a given subject, and the many and varied reviews and problems, are positive factors in appealing to and developing this independence. As a basis for the elementary work, the authors have adopted the pupil's own knowledge of simple business transactions, - the exchange of values with which he is already familiar in the buying of many of the articles used in the home. Thus the new subject is approached with confidence through well-known operations. A number of sets are arranged for business practice which may be carried out as fully as the instructor desires; for since all of this work is optional, it may be fitted to the needs of the individual class. The business practice may be omitted in any set at the discretion of the instructor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
