Book excerpt: Since its early success as an experimental test of the theory of general relativity in 1919, gravitational lensing has come a long way and is firmly established as an indispensable element for many astrophysical applications. In this thesis, we explore novel applications of gravitational lensing that further our understanding of the dark sectors of the cosmos and other astrophysical objects, namely dark matter nanostructure, black holes and the Galactic disk. We pay particular attention to developing concrete and optimal statistical methodologies and numerical implemen- tations for these novel probes. We start by developing a statistical framework to measure the dark matter power spectrum in the deep nonlinear regime, using transient weak lensing, and simultaneously measure the time delays for strongly lensed quasars. We then outline how observations of microlensing in optical and radio can unravel the structure, dynamics, and content of the Galactic disk, and in particular, be used to detect stellar mass black holes. Lastly, using the shadow images of the super-massive black holes caused by extreme lensing effect, we can learn about the structure of space-time, accretion flows and astrophysical jets. We present a Bayesian framework for analyzing the data from the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration.

Book excerpt: In this book the applicability and the utility of two statistical approaches for understanding dark energy and dark matter with gravitational lensing measurement are introduced. For cosmological constraints on the nature of dark energy, morphological statistics called Minkowski functionals (MFs) to extract the non-Gaussian information of gravitational lensing are studied. Measuring lensing MFs from the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Lensing survey (CFHTLenS), the author clearly shows that MFs can be powerful statistics beyond the conventional approach with the two-point correlation function. Combined with the two-point correlation function, MFs can constrain the equation of state of dark energy with a precision level of approximately 3–4 % in upcoming surveys with sky coverage of 20,000 square degrees. On the topic of dark matter, the author studied the cross-correlation of gravitational lensing and the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB). Dark matter annihilation is among the potential contributors to the EGB. The cross-correlation is a powerful probe of signatures of dark matter annihilation, because both cosmic shear and gamma-ray emission originate directly from the same dark matter distribution in the universe. The first measurement of the cross-correlation using a real data set obtained from CFHTLenS and the Fermi Large Area Telescope was performed. Comparing the result with theoretical predictions, an independent constraint was placed on dark matter annihilation. Future lensing surveys will be useful to constrain on the canonical value of annihilation cross section for a wide range of mass of dark matter annihilation. Book excerpt: The detection of gravitational waves by Advanced LIGO in 2015 marked the start of a new era in astrophysics. These small ripples in space-time - first predicted in the early 20th century by Albert Einstein - encode properties of the progenitor system and provide a powerful new way to probe distant and extreme astrophysical environments. My dissertation focuses on contributions I have made in facilitating the multi-messenger detection of electromagnetically bright sources and using LIGO's observations (or lack thereof) to constrain models of the dark matter. I describe the motivation for Advanced LIGO searches for sub-solar mass ultracompact binaries, as well as two recent searches I carried out with the LIGO-Virgo Scientific Collaboration. No confident detections were made in these searches, but the null result allowed us to place the tightest contraint to date on a particular model of the dark matter. I also discuss my contributions to efforts to detect binary neutron stars. Although the first BNS detection, GW170817, was a model multi-messenger discovery, there remains much to be learned about the extreme environment of the coalescence that can only be resolved by additional, prompt observations. I describe a subthreshold search for BNS that aims to increase our catalog of joint discoveries by facilitating searches for temporal or spatial coincidence, as well as recent attempts to detect BNS prior to merger to enable prompt electromagnetic followup.

Many of our dark matter theories impose scales at which the CDM paradigm breaks down, mainly by changing the distribution of collapsed structures (halos) at low masses. An investigative priority of modern astrophysics has been searching for these violations of CDM predictions. Probing dark matter at these scales is challenging; dark matter halos are traditionally traced by the galaxies they host, but at low masses, we do not fully understand the connection between halos and galaxies. However, strong gravitational lenses are sensitive to low-mass halos even if they host no galaxies. In this thesis, I develop the statistical tools that allow us to use strong lenses to measure the small-scale, dark matter structure underlying our Universe. I present work that leverages neural networks to produce posterior distributions for the parameters underlying strong gravitational lensing images. This work includes the development of a hierarchical inference framework that corrects for the implicit prior encoded into the network by the training distribution. After showing that we can use the technique to constrain the population statistics of lenses without low-mass halos, I present work that extends the methodology to measurements of the subhalo mass function (SHMF). With the aid of new simulation tools, the results demonstrate that we can reliably infer the SHMF across disparate configurations of hundreds of lenses. I then discuss the improvements that can be made as the methodology is extended to the data. I conclude by outlining the physics that can be measured with this new set of tools. I argue that the advances in this thesis serve as a foundation for turning strong gravitational lenses into a sensitive probe of dark matter physics.
