They provide us an important knowledge for stability condition of the slope. The essential requirement of the soil parameters is determined in the laboratory for the analysis of the slope meeting the insitu conditions. For the location of the phreatic surface three different scenarios were considered for the profile of the water surface to carry out the analysis. Effective strength parameters were considered to assess the long-term stability condition. The spatial variability of the random variables was incorporated into this model and by considering the contributions of the end resistance of 3-D probability of failure. The 3-D aspects of failure were investigated using FLAC3D software incorporating all the parameters of the soil to visualize the failure probability for the scenarios. Both normal and lognormal distribution of FOS were considered in order to compare and contrast the reliability and probabilities of failure in a measurable ways using NORMDIST and NORMSDIST program which is integrated in MS-EXCEL and from the probability density function table. The analysis gave that Probability of failure for normal distribution is higher than that of probability of failure for lognormal distribution. It was also attempted to investigate the best combination of the slope parameters to have the desirable target probability of failure for the scenarios and recommendation were made to provide geosynthetic reinforcement for stabilization and construct appropriate retaining wall with proper drainage as well as provision of sheet pile to achieve the desirable postulated probabilities of failure.

In this chapter, a deterministic slope stability analysis based on strength reduction finite-element method is introduced first. After that, the slope is investigated using simple probabilistic concepts and classical slope stability techniques, and the shear strength is treated as a single random variable. Further, the random finite-element method (RFEM) is shown, in which spatial correlation and local averaging are illustrated in detail. Finally, the RFEM is applied to slope stability risk assessment, and the results can lead to higher probabilities of failure.

Once these moments are known, the probability of failure or reliability of the system can be calculated by assuming a distribution shape and using standard probability tables. This technique can be used on a variety of geotechnical problems to transform existing deterministic analyses into probabilistic design analyses. Examples of the application of the methodology developed herein are presented in the areas of shear strength, bearing capacity, and slope stability. The examples are used to illustrate how a reliability type of design analyses might be performed, the influence of the choice of distribution on calculated results, and the contrasts between conventional factor of safety analyses and probabilistic analyses. The point estimate method presented in this report is a simple and powerful tool that can be used in conjunction with any numerical analysis. By identifying the N random variables in a design analysis and assigning to them one sigma bounds to reflect subjective uncertainty or parameter variability, the mean and variances of the design parameters can be estimated from 2 to the nth point estimates. The primary obstacle to successful implementation of the techniques presented in this report is the lack of information on appropriate distribution shapes for various geotechnical design parameters.
