Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper adds to current understanding of the former & present status of old growth forest in Ontario. It first outlines the history of the province's forests since the last deglaciation, the settlement & land clearance patterns that occurred after arrival of Europeans, and the extent of original woodland still existing in southern Ontario. This is followed by two case studies illustrating typical settlement-area landscapes, based on analysis of historical land survey data, that question the popular view of pine as being the dominant species in old growth Ontario forests. Implications of the findings for forest restoration are discussed.
