Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an introduction to the texture analysis of deformed materials and explores methods of determining and interpreting the preferred orientation of crystals in deformed polycrystalline aggregates.**The book reviews: 1) the techniques, procedures, and theoretical basis for the accumulation and analysis of orientation data; 2)the processes by which polycrystals deform and the microstructural mechanisms responsible for the development of the preferred orientation; 3) the textures in specific systems and application of principles to the solution of specific problems.**With a combination of metallurgic and geologic applications, Preferred Orientation in Deformed Metals and Rocks: An Introduction to Modern Texture Analysis will be an important source book for students and researchers in materials science, solid state physics, structural geology, and geophysics.**FROM THE PREFACE: Determination and interpretation of the preferred orientation of crystals in deformed polycrystalline aggregates (in this volume also referred to as texture) has been of longstanding concern to both materials scientists and geologists. A similar theoretical background--such as the dislocation theory of crystal plasticity--has been the basis of understanding flow in metals and rocks; and similar determinative techniques--including microscopy and x-ray diffraction--have been used to study textures and microstructures. Whereas many of the fundamental principles have been established early this century by scientists such as Jeffery, Sachs, Sander, Schmid, Schmidt, and Taylor, only in recent years has knowledge reached a level that provides a quantitative framework which has replaced a largely phenomenological approach. This is expressed in the sudden new emphasis on textural studies, as documented by the large number of recent publications.**This volume contains material to serve as an introduction for those who wish to enter this field as well as reviews for those who are already engaged in advanced research....**The book is divided into three parts. The first (Chapters 2*b17) deals with techniques, procedures, and theoretical bases for the accumulation and analysis of orientation data. The second (Chapters 8*b112) introduces processes by which polycrystals deform and the microstructural mechanisms responsible for the development of the preferred orientation. All those chapters emphasize basic principles and apply to metals as well as to minerals. The third part (Chapters 13*b126) illustrates textures in specific systems and the application of the principles set out in the earlier chapters to the solution of specific problems. Readers of these chapters will quickly become aware that metals have been more exhaustively studied than minerals; but they will also realize that, because of their structural symmetry, metals are in general much simpler than rocks and that the intepretation of metal textures is less involved. An extensive list of relevant references provides access to much of the original literature on textures....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motion and deformation of rocks are processes of fundamental importance in shaping the Earth, from outer crustal layers to the deep mantle. Reconstructions of the evolution of the Earth therefore require detailed knowledge of the geometry of deformation structures and their relative timing, of the motions leading to deformation structures and of the mechanisms governing these motions. This volume contains a collection of 22 papers on field, experimental and theoretical studies that add to our knowledge of these processes.

Book excerpt: Ten years have passed since the last symposium on "Rock Deformation" was held in Los Angeles. The intervening period has seen striking advances in X-ray and experimental structural petrology. The Symposium of the Working Group on X-Ray and Experimental Structural Petrology, held at the invitation of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft on 17 and 18 February, 1969, in the Mineralogy Institute of the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, was intended to display the progress made in this field. A meeting on the same had been held in 1968 at the Mineralogy Institute of the Technische Hochschule Aachen. The outcome of many years of effort has been the development of new, automated in struments for the X-ray processing of specimens. The X-ray and optical data so obtained are processed by computer to give complete texture diagrams; it is also possible to rotate the coordinates, and to make an indirect determination of data which have not been measured. In experimental structural petrology, the temperature and pressure dependence of the translational system has been studied in minerals from various types of rock formation which had not previously been investigated, and deductions were made concerning certain mineral parageneses. The original contributions on field findings were conceived and executed so as to point up the possible links with experimental work on structural petrology. They determine for a given mineral facies the pressure and temperature ranges to be applied in experimen tal studies of deformation in single crystals and in rocks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cornerstone in the study of both natural and technological materials is characterisation of microstructure. In the widest sense this topic encompasses, for all phases present: morphology, including size and shape distributions; chemical composition; crystallographic parameters, including orientation and orientation relationships. A landmark advance for the materials community occurred with the genesis of 'microtexture', which for the first time provided integration of crystallographic parameters and other aspects of the microstructure. A definition of microtexture is: 'a population of crystallographic orientations whose individual components are linked to their location within the microstructure.' The term microtexture also describes any experimental technique used to determine this information. Essentially, a stationary beam of electrons is diffracted by atomic planes in the sampled volume of specimen. Analysis of the resulting diffraction pattern provides crystallographic information which can be related back to its position of origin. An estimated 95 percent of microtexture determination is by 'electron backscatter diffraction' (EBSD) in a scanning electron microscope (SEM), with the remaining 5 percent contributed mainly by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) counterparts to EBSD. Evaluation (indexing) of EBSD diffraction patterns and output of data in a variety of formats is in most cases fully automated. The most exciting EBSD output is an 'orientation map', which is a quantitative depiction of the microstructure in terms of its orientation constituents. Microtexture determination is now firmly established as the most comprehensive experimental tool for quantitative characterisation and analysis of microstructure, and is used extensively in both research and industry. Much has changed since this book was first published and the second edition has been completely rewritten to reflect these changes.

Book excerpt: Although the Fourier transform is among engineering's most widely used mathematical tools, few engineers realize that the extension of harmonic analysis to functions on groups holds great potential for solving problems in robotics, image analysis, mechanics, and other areas. This self-contained approach, geared toward readers with a standard background in engineering mathematics, explores the widest possible range of applications to fields such as robotics, mechanics, tomography, sensor calibration, estimation and control, liquid crystal analysis, and conformational statistics of macromolecules. Harmonic analysis is explored in terms of particular Lie groups, and the text deals with only a limited number of proofs, focusing instead on specific applications and fundamental mathematical results. Forming a bridge between pure mathematics and the challenges of modern engineering, this updated and expanded volume offers a concrete, accessible treatment that places the general theory in the context of specific groups.

Book excerpt: This book furnishes detailed information about Turkey's existing mineral resources, besides providing concepts and ideas which may help the search for potential mineral resources in the future. It is a first book in the English-language international literature on mineral resources of Turkey and it is aimed at economic geologists, mining engineers, and mining investors, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. This work focuses mainly on a range of mineral systems and related geological features throughout Turkey. Taking into account the lack of international literature on these resources, a considerable portion of the book explains the geological context of the region and the settings in which the mineral resources occur. The genetic characteristics of these mineral resources are emphasized and important information is also presented on their economic aspects. All chapter contributions are prepared by researchers and professional geologists.
