Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual perception is a complex process requiring interaction between the receptors in the eye that sense the stimulus and the neural system and the brain that are responsible for communicating and interpreting the sensed visual information. This process involves several physical, neural, and cognitive phenomena whose understanding is essential to design effective and computationally efficient imaging solutions. Building on advances in computer vision, image and video processing, neuroscience, and information engineering, perceptual digital imaging greatly enhances the capabilities of traditional imaging methods. Filling a gap in the literature, Perceptual Digital Imaging: Methods and Applications comprehensively covers the system design, implementation, and application aspects of this emerging specialized area. It gives readers a strong, fundamental understanding of theory and methods, providing a foundation on which solutions for many of the most interesting and challenging imaging problems can be built. The book features contributions by renowned experts who present the state of the art and recent trends in image acquisition, processing, storage, display, and visual quality evaluation. They detail advances in the field and explore human visual system-driven approaches across a broad spectrum of applications, including: Image quality and aesthetics assessment Digital camera imaging White balancing and color enhancement Thumbnail generation Image restoration Super-resolution imaging Digital halftoning and dithering Color feature extraction Semantic multimedia analysis and processing Video shot characterization Image and video encryption Display quality enhancement This is a valuable resource for readers who want to design and implement more effective solutions for cutting-edge digital imaging, computer vision, and multimedia applications. Suitable as a graduate-level textbook or stand-alone reference for researchers and practitioners, it provides a unique overview of an important and rapidly developing research field.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive examination of the use of MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-7, MPEG-21, and MPEG-A standards, providing a detailed reference to their application. In this book, the authors address five leading MPEG standards: MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-7, MPEG-21, and MPEG-A, focusing not only on the standards themselves, but specifically upon their application (e.g. for broadcasting media, personalised advertising and news, multimedia collaboration, digital rights management, resource adaptation, digital home systems, and so on); including MPEG cross-breed applications. In the evolving digital multimedia landscape, this book provides comprehensive coverage of the key MPEG standards used for generation and storage, distribution and dissemination, and delivery of multimedia data to various platforms within a wide variety of application domains. It considers how these MPEG standards may be used, the context of their use, and how supporting and complementary technologies and the standards interact and add value to each other. Key Features: Integrates the application of five popular MPEG standards (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-7, MPEG-21, and MPEG-A) into one single volume, including MPEG cross-breed applications Up-to-date coverage of the field based on the latest versions of the five MPEG standards Opening chapter provides overviews of each of the five MPEG standards Contributions from leading MPEG experts worldwide Includes an accompanying website with supporting material (www.wiley.com/go/angelides_mpeg) This book provides an invaluable reference for researchers, practitioners, CTOs, design engineers, and developers. Postgraduate students taking MSc, MRes, MPhil and PhD courses in computer science and engineering, IT consultants, and system developers in the telecoms, broadcasting and publishing sectors will also find this book of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of open workshops devoted to modem cryptology began in Santa Barbara, California in 1981 and was followed in 1982 by a European counterpart in Burg Feurstein, Germany. The series has been maintained with summer meetings in Santa Barbara and spring meetings somewhere in Europe. At the 1983 meeting in Santa Barbara the International Association for Cryptologic Research was launched and it now sponsors all the meetings of the series. Following the tradition of the series, papers were invited in the form of extended abstracts and were reviewed by the programme committee, which selected those to be presented. After the meeting, full papers were produced, in some cases with impro- ments and corrections. These papers form the main part of the present volume. They are placed in the same order that they took at the meeting and under the same headings, for ease of reference by those who attended. The classification under these headings was a little arbitary, needing to fit the timing of the day‘s activities, but it makes a workable method of arrangement. Also following tradition, a “rump session’’ was held during one evening, under the effective chairmanship of John Gordon. These were short presentations and those present found them to have some real interest, therefore we have taken the unusual step of including short papers contributed by the rump session speakers at the end of this volume, with a necessarily simplified review process.

Book excerpt: This book contains a set of revised refereed papers selected from the presentations at the Second International Workshop on Fast Software Encryption held in Leuven, Belgium, in December 1994. The 28 papers presented significantly advance the state of the art of software algorithms for two cryptographic primitives requiring very high speeds, namely encryption algorithms and hash functions: this volume contains six proposals for new ciphers as well as new results on the security of the new proposals. In addition, there is an introductory overview by the volume editor. The papers are organized in several sections on stream ciphers and block ciphers; other papers deal with new algorithms and protocols or other recent results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The communication chain is constituted by a source and a recipient, separated by a transmission channel which may represent a portion of cable, an optical fiber, a radio channel, or a satellite link. Whatever the channel, the processing blocks implemented in the communication chain have the same foundation. This book aims to itemize. In this first volume, after having presented the base of the information theory, we will study the source coding techniques with and without loss. Then we analyze the correcting codes for block errors, convutional and concatenated used in current systems.
