Book excerpt: This book presents and discusses theoretical and practical perspectives on English pronunciation theory, research and practice in order to establish evidence-based pronunciation teaching models, teaching and research priorities, and recommendations for best practices in teaching English pronunciation. The chapters provide a balanced view of theory and practice based on the authors’ empirical findings and their extensive professional experiences in English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL) and lingua franca contexts. The book identifies pronunciation teaching priorities that take into account individual learner variables, disseminates knowledge about theoretical frameworks, explores teachers’ and learners’ beliefs and practices regarding pronunciation instruction, and shares empirical findings regarding teacher education and teaching interventions in diverse contexts with English learners of different ages and language backgrounds. Overall, the chapters highlight the need to focus on intelligibility models that consider individual learner differences, and teacher and contextual variables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English enjoys a preeminent position today among world languages. However, even the large populations that are proficient in the vocabulary and grammar of English are not equally proficient in the pronunciation of the language. This adult population is the target audience of this book. Based on the RP (Received Pronunciation) model - the most widely understood English pronunciation across the world - this systematically organized and lucidly written text covers the entire range from sound to connected speech, i.e., dialogues, anecdotes, passages and short speeches. The book is in two parts: Part I deals with all important aspects of English pronunciation; Part II comprises a pronouncing dictionary. Intended for adult learners of English, the book chiefly aims at remediation, and most of the practice materials and exercises are given with this end in view. Besides, with the help of numerous listening exercises, the course sharpens the learners' ability to comprehend spoken English with ease, thereby training them to face real-life situations (for example, interviews) with confidence and competence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1962, Gimson’s Pronunciation of English has been the essential reference book for anyone studying or teaching the pronunciation of English. This eighth edition has been updated to describe General British (GB) as the principal accent, rather than RP, and the accompanying transcriptions have been brought into line with recent changes in pronunciation. This latest edition also includes completely rewritten chapters on the history of the language and the emergence of a standard, alongside a justification for the change from RP to GB. A further bonus to this important text is its extensive and attractive new Companion Website (www.routledge.com/cw/cruttenden), which now includes moment-by-moment commentaries on videos showing the articulation of all GB consonants and vowels in spoken phrases, as well as cross-referencing between the book and these videos. The Companion Website also includes new recordings of Old English, Middle English, and Early Modern English, and features links to recordings of recent and current GB with comments and transcriptions. Comprehensive yet accessible, Gimson’s Pronunciation of English remains the indispensable reference book for anyone for anyone with an interest in English phonetics.

This book was released on 2010-02-19 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a phonetic description of intonation in Cameroon English, a postcolonial variety of English. Its focus is on the usage of specific tones, paratone and the intonational marking of the information status in discourse. Two main descriptive frameworks are used, namely the Discourse Intonation and the Auto-Segmental Metrical frameworks. Findings of the study are based on the auditory and acoustic analyses of natural conversation as well as read speech and, with relation to the sociolinguistic variables of education and gender, the linguistic variable speaking style. These findings demonstrate for example that, unlike speakers of other postcolonial Englishes (cf. Nigerian English), Cameroon English speakers make new information more prominent (or louder) than given information in the discourse structure. Furthermore, it is shown that Cameroon English speakers make extensive use of the falling pitch movement in speech, which leads the author to conclude that the falling tone does a lot of work in Cameroon English. Lastly, the findings also reveal that sociolinguistic theories postulated in native English communities do not necessarily apply in postcolonial English settings given that native English and postcolonial Englishes have being developing along different lines.
