Book excerpt: Organic light-emitting diode technology is evolving rapidly with commercial applications in recent years. OLED materials and design are moving into an advanced stage with optimising techniques becoming more important. This work presents the use of porphyrin materials for organic electronics, specifically for organic light-emitting diodes using phosphorescent emission. The porphyrins show interesting photophysical properties which allow for an exploitation of the normally forbidden triplet energy states to achieve a significant enhancement in the device efficiency. This research presents a simple host–guest system where this concept is demonstrated. Various porphyrin structures are synthesised and tuned for OLED performance; from this, we can learn how chemical structure relates to the exciton dynamics and their resulting light emission. It is hoped that this work outlines a possible route to phosphorescent OLED technologies.

Book excerpt: How do you describe an analytical method, measure the purity of the new chemical that you have just synthesized, or report the proper units of measurement? For analytical chemists, the principal tool of the trade, or source of terms, is this book - the so-called Orange Book. First published in 1978, this latest edition takes into account the explosion of new analytical procedures and, at the same time, the diversity of techniques and the quality and performance characteristics of the procedures that are the focus of interest. The scope of analytical chemistry has widened, new types of instrumental techniques have emerged and automation has taken over. Answers can now be shared, not only on the chemical composition and structure of the sample, but also changes in composition and structure in space and time. New chapters on chemometrics, bio-analytical methods of analysis, and sample treatment and preparation have been added. The terminology of metrology and quality assurance is now up to date with the latest ISO and JCGM standards. This new volume will be an indispensable reference resource for the coming decade, revising and updating accepted terminology, and providing the official language of analytical chemistry.

Book excerpt: Solution-Processed Organic Light-Emitting Devices provides a comprehensive reference on the principles and advances in materials design, device structures, and processing technologies of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Most importantly, the book analyses the dynamics of thin-film growth from solutions such as solvent orthogonalization, coffee-ring effects, and interfacial adhesion. Exciton generation and utilization, host–guest energy transfer, and interfacial interaction in the solution-processed films are considered with the material and device design to maximize the electroluminescent performance of OLEDs.The book reviews the materials, devices, and technologies dedicated to solution-processed thin-film devices, which are not only applicable to OLEDs but may be adapted to other emerging semiconducting devices due to the similarity in methods (for instance, quantum-dot LEDs and solar cells, and perovskite-based LEDs/photovoltaics/detectors).This book is suitable for researchers in academia and industry working in the materials science and engineering, chemistry, and physics disciplines. Discusses the most relevant and emerging solution-processable materials for OLED applications Reviews device engineering to address defects, charge transport, and exciton generation in fabricated solution-processable thin films Provides the methods to grow multilayered thin films from solutions with organic semiconductors, with particular attention to new technologies to overcome interfacial mixing effects

Volume 2 focuses on the electro assisted use of N4 complexes as biomimetic models for studying several biological redox processes. It focuses on molecular oxygen transport and catalytic activation to mimic monooxygenase enzymes of the cytochrome P450 in particular. It also examines N4 complexes’ use as catalysts for the oxidative degradation of various types of pollutants (organo-halides, for example) and residual wastes. The remarkable activity of these complexes towards a large number of significantly relevant biological compounds makes them excellent candidates as electrode modifiers for electrochemical sensing. This volume also discusses applications of N4 Macrocyclic Metal Complexes to photoelectrochemistry and photocatalysis, and concludes with an exciting section on Electrosynthesis of N4.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: My research presents the synthesis and photophysical characterization of [pi]- extended platinum porphyrins. These novel near-IR phosphors have emission ranging from 770 to 1000 nm with the highest photoluminescence efficiencies ever reported. Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) that feature electroluminescence solely in the near-IR have been fabricated from these materials by two methods: thermal vapor deposition of small molecules (OLEDs) and solution processing with polymers to form thin films (PLEDs). The synthesis of the platinum complexes for [pi]-extended porphyrins has been retarded due to the difficulty and low yield by current methods. Developed herein is a novel metallation procedure to obtain for the first time platinum complexes for [pi]-extended porphyrins in high yield.

It reports the fundamentals of glass, challenges in the development, traditional and new manufacturing processes, characterization techniques, structural, thermal, and optical properties. The book reviews redox reactions in glasses and the factors affecting them, in addition to the techniques for determining the redox states and speciation of polyvalent ions in glass. A special chapter is dedicate to phosphate glasses, their importance, preparation methods, structure and properties. The use of different types of phosphate glasses in biomedicine, optics, electrochemistry, and as hosts for nuclear wastes is thoroughly discussed. Moreover, the applications of phosphate glasses in electronics and laser technology are also discussed in this book. Recent experimental studies such as the development of a novel bioglass system and the influence of ZnO, TiO2, and Al2O3 incorporation on structural, mechanical strength, degradation, pH variation, and formation of hydroxyapatite (Hap) layer on the glass surface are reported. Promising aluminum-silicate glassy system and its glass-ceramic counterpart are also presented in this books. An overview of the calorimetry approaches related to rare earth improvements on the thermal stability of glass is provided. The book discusses the advances in the chalcogenide glasses (ChGs) and based devices. It also reports their applications in optical devices, semiconductor circuits, and other applications. In addition, lanthanide and/or QDs doped luminescent glasses and their use in solid-state lighting and displays, security (anti-counterfeiting), optical temperature sensors, and solar energy (solar spectrum conversion) are reviewed along with a comparison of their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the nature of phthalocyanines as materials for glass coatings and most widely used synthesis methods of porphyrins and phthalocyanines are discussed.
