Book excerpt: Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is becoming a major climate change mitigation strategy. Some key issues that have limited accelerated development are injectivity losses due to near-wellbore salt precipitation during geological sequestration and poor displacement efficiency during utilization for enhanced oil recovery. To understand and mitigate these challenges, a pore-scale approach that combines flow tests with digital rock physics is proposed. This was implemented to visualize, quantify, and assess CO2/oil/brine/rock interactions that culminate in salt precipitation. It was also used to evaluate the pore morphology changes and the oil recovery performance encountered during carbonated water injection (CWI). In the studies on salt precipitation, three evolution stages—advection-dominated, transition, and diffusion-dominated evaporative drying—were observed. A new mechanism that occurs during the transition from advection to diffusion-limited flow termed reverse solute diffusion was also delineated. This mechanism was typified by upward solute diffusion from regions of lower concentration within the aqueous phase to a highly concentrated evaporating front. The time required for precipitation initiation was shorter in an intermediate-wet carbonate than in a weakly oil-wet carbonate. Higher amounts of salt deposits were formed in the more hydrophilic (intermediate-wet) carbonate, leading to an intensification of porosity reduction in this rock. In addition, the presence of oil within the pore space did not hinder the precipitation process but suppressed the reverse flow of solutes toward the evaporation front, thereby creating localized precipitation at the front. Mineral dissolution via CWI-induced reactive transport is one way to increase near-wellbore injectivity. In experiments involving oil/carbonated water/carbonate rock systems, flow channeling resulted in significant mineral dissolution. This led to the formation of high-conductivity wormholes with two distinct patterns. The first was a conical wormhole formed at a low flow rate where diffusion was significant. Whereas, the second was a dominant wormhole developed at a higher injection rate where advection controlled the transport of reactive species to the flow boundaries. Experiments performed to determine the underlying oil recovery mechanisms during CWI in oil-wet carbonate rocks revealed that carbonated low salinity seawater containing definite amounts of potential determining ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, and SO42−) promotes superior oil recovery compared to other brine samples. This enhanced performance was evidenced by the dominance of wettability reversal to near-neutral states, which created a more favorable capillary pressure required for pore-level displacements. Wettability alteration originated from the reduction in electrostatic attraction between oil/brine and brine/rock interfaces through the surface adsorption of SO42− ions in low-pH environments.

Book excerpt: In this work, an integrated experimental and numerical investigation was implemented to evaluate carbon dioxide (CO2) enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and geological sequestration using core samples from the Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin, China, a sandstone formation representative of tight oil reservoirs. The first study phase, laboratory experiments, examined and quantified the fundamental mechanisms of CO2 displacement via interfacial tension tests, viscosity measurements, contact angle measurements, and constant composition expansion tests. For both unfractured and fractured core samples, three injection strategies of CO2 continuous flooding, water alternative gas injection (WAG: CO2), and cyclic CO2 injection were examined. For fractured core samples, CO2 foam/surfactant alternative gas injection (SAG) was also evaluated. WAG and CO2 foam/SAG injections were superior to continuous CO2 injection for oil recovery but inferior in CO2 storage due to pore-occupation by intermittent liquid-slug injections. Cyclic CO2 injection was the most effective dual-purpose injection strategy though its effectiveness was reduced by preferential breakthrough in fractures. Secondly, a multiphase compositional simulation study examined CO2 displacement in an unfractured tight core. This phase included digital core reconstruction, sensitivity analysis of saturation functions, history match of the three laboratory-tested injection strategies, and their optimization. Modeling verified the laboratory observations and led to additional findings: (1) extended soaking enhanced oil recovery but was limited by the low CO2 injection rate; (2) increasing the cycle size for favorable mobility control improved WAG injection performance; (3) total CO2 injection volume for the improved sweeping volume was the most important factor in cyclic CO2 injection.

Storing the carbon dioxide from NETs has the same impact on the atmosphere and climate as simultaneously preventing an equal amount of carbon dioxide from being emitted. Recent analyses found that deploying NETs may be less expensive and less disruptive than reducing some emissions, such as a substantial portion of agricultural and land-use emissions and some transportation emissions. In 2015, the National Academies published Climate Intervention: Carbon Dioxide Removal and Reliable Sequestration, which described and initially assessed NETs and sequestration technologies. This report acknowledged the relative paucity of research on NETs and recommended development of a research agenda that covers all aspects of NETs from fundamental science to full-scale deployment. To address this need, Negative Emissions Technologies and Reliable Sequestration: A Research Agenda assesses the benefits, risks, and "sustainable scale potential" for NETs and sequestration. This report also defines the essential components of a research and development program, including its estimated costs and potential impact.

Book excerpt: Capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from stationary sources and injecting it into deep underground geologic formations has been identified as a viable method for reducing carbon emissions to the atmosphere. Sedimentary rocks, such as sandstones overlain by shales or evaporites, are the preferred formations because their morphology and structure provide pore space, and containment for the long term storage of CO2. Sandstone formations have also served as repositories to migrating hydrocarbons, and are the sites of many oil recovery operations. For many depleted oil reservoirs, secondary waterflooding recovery methods are no longer efficient or economically viable, hence the application of tertiary CO2 enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) followed by CO2 storage is an attractive and cost effective business plan. Citronelle Oil Field, located in southwest Alabama, is the largest and longest producing sandstone oil reservoir in the state, having produced more than 170 million barrels of oil from its estimated 500 million barrels of original oil in place, since its discovery in 1955. The field is in the later stages of secondary recovery by waterflooding and daily oil production has declined considerably. The field is comprised of the Upper and Lower Donovan hydrocarbon bearing sandstones, which are separated by the saline-water-bearing sandstones of the Middle Donovan. The Ferry Lake Anhydrite, which overlies the three sections, serves as their caprock. The present work is focused on an investigation of the feasibility of a CO2-EOR project for the Citronelle Oil Field and the use of the Middle Donovan for long term CO2 storage. A set of static calculations, based on estimation methods which were retrieved from publications in the field, was followed by computer simulations using MASTER 3.0, TOUGH2-ECO2N, and TOUGHREACT. Results using MASTER 3.0, for simulation of CO2-EOR, indicated that nearly 50 million barrels of additional oil could be produced by tertiary recovery. Results using TOUGH2-ECO2N and TOUGHREACT, for the simulations of CO2 storage, indicated that 159 million metric tons (175 short tons) of CO2 could be stored in the Middle Donovan formation. An investigation into possible CO2 leakage from the reservoirs indicated that the Ferry Lake Anhydrite serves as a very reliable long term storage seal. The present work can serve as a template for preliminary assessment of tertiary oil recovery and CO2 storage of similar oil reservoirs and saline-water formations.

Book excerpt: The Southwest Regional Partnership (SWP) on Carbon Sequestration designed and deployed a medium-scale field pilot test of geologic carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in the Aneth oil field. Greater Aneth oil field, Utah's largest oil producer, was discovered in 1956 and has produced over 455 million barrels of oil (72 million m3). Located in the Paradox Basin of southeastern Utah, Greater Aneth is a stratigraphic trap producing from the Pennsylvanian Paradox Formation. Because it represents an archetype oil field of the western U.S., Greater Aneth was selected as one of three geologic pilots to demonstrate combined enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and CO2 sequestration under the auspices of the SWP on Carbon Sequestration, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The pilot demonstration focuced on the western portion of the Aneth Unit as this area of the field was converted from waterflood production to CO2 EOR starting in late 2007. The Aneth Unit is in the northwestern part of the field and has produced 149 million barrels (24 million m3) of the estimated 450 million barrels (71.5 million m3) of the original oil in place - a 33% recovery rate. The large amount of remaining oil makes the Aneth Unit ideal to demonstrate both CO2 storage capacity and EOR by CO2 flooding. This report summarizes the geologic characterization research, the various field monitoring tests, and the development of a geologic model and numerical simulations conducted for the Aneth demonstration project. The Utah Geological Survey (UGS), with contributions from other Partners, evaluated how the surface and subsurface geology of the Aneth Unit demonstration site will affect sequestration operations and engineering strategies. The UGS-research for the project are summarized in Chapters 1 through 7, and includes (1) mapping the surface geology including stratigraphy, faulting, fractures, and deformation bands, (2) describing the local Jurassic and Cretaceous stratigraphy, (3) mapping the Desert Creek zone reservoir, Gothic seal, and overlying aquifers, (4) characterizing the depositional environments and diagenetic events that produced significant reservoir heterogeneity, (5) describing the geochemical, petrographic, and geomechanical properties of the seal to determine the CO2 or hydrocarbon column it could support, and (6) evaluating the production history to compare primary production from vertical and horizontal wells, and the effects of waterflood and wateralternating- gas flood programs. The field monitoring demonstrations were conducted by various Partners including New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, University of Utah, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Cambridge Geosciences. The monitoring tests are summarized in Chapters 8 through 12, and includes (1) interwell tracer studies during water- and CO2-flood operations to characterize tracer behavoirs in anticipation of CO2-sequestration applications, (2) CO2 soil flux monitoring to measure background levels and variance and assess the sensitivity levels for CO2 surface monitoring, (3) testing the continuous monitoring of self potential as a means to detect pressure anomalies and electrochemical reaction due to CO2 injection, (4) conducting time-lapse vertical seismic profiling to image change near a CO2 injection well, and (5) monitoring microseismicity using a downhole string of seismic receivers to detect fracture slip and deformation associated with stress changes. Finally, the geologic modeling and numerical simulation study was conducted by researcher at the University of Utah. Chapter 13 summarizes their efforts which focused on developing a site-specific geologic model for Aneth to better understand and design CO2 storage specifically tailored to oil reservoirs.
