Halpine (Miles O'reilly): Consisting of Odes, Poems, Sonnets, Epics, and Lyrical Effusions Which Have Not Heretofore Been Collected Together; With a Biographical Sketch and Explanatory Notes This is not intended to be a complete collection of the poetical works of Charles G. Halpine. Some of these are already before the public in "Miles O'Reilly His Book" and "Baked Meats of the Funeral," from which it is not desirable to copy them, as much of their significance, in many instances, depends upon their connection with the prose matter with which they are interwoven. It would be impossible, if it were desirable, to make any extended extracts from those two books without explanations that would render this compilation cumbersome. Some of his earlier productions have been taken from the volume entitled "Lyrics by the Letter H," which he published in the year 1854, and which is out of print, but the great body of the following effusions are now for the first time collected. They are followed by notes describing the circumstances under which some of them were written, and giving personal reminiscences of the author that will grow in interest daily. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will captivate readers interested in the legacy of the Civil War, the role of military veterans after they return to civilian life, and the fight against racism in America. Steven A. Goldman looks at the contentious post-Civil War era from the perspective of that special breed, Union soldiers who lived by the bayonet and survived to carry on the fight for equality in the decades to come. He explores the root causes of this historic contest, the changing attitudes of northern servicemen with respect to the Civil War’s purpose, and the psychological effect of involvement in what, from hindsight, was an unfinished work in the cause of freedom and equality for all Americans. Relying on unpublished letters and other primary sources, Goldman uses the veterans’ words and actions to depict their steadfast struggle to preserve the memory and understanding of why the war was fought, and to confront the implications of remembrance, commemoration and reconciliation for America's future.

Book Synopsis Knocking Round the Rockies by : Ernest Ingersoll

Book excerpt: Narratives of the author's experiences in the field work of the Geological and geographical survey of the territories, in Colorado 1874 and Wyoming 1877. Ernest Ingersoll first came to the West in 1874 as a member of Ferdinand V. Hayden's Geological Survey of the Territories. His lively recollections of the two summers he spent with survey teams in the Rocky Mountain West are narrated in Knocking Round the Rockies. It is at once a guidebook to the geography, nature, history, and culture of the Rocky Mountains and a practical primer of how-to-do-it information for "future wanderers". His party left Denver through the Berthoud Pass to Hot Sulphur Springs and Grand Lake, traveled south to Leadville, the San Juans, and the Los Pinos Agency of the Ute tribe, and ended with the climactic discovery of the ruins at Mesa Verde.
