Book excerpt: Platon (Atenas, 427 - 347 a. C.) fue un filósofo griego que, junto con su maestro Sócrates y su discípulo Aristóteles, es una figura central en la que se asienta toda la tradición filosófica europea. Alfred North Whitehead subrayó su importancia afirmando que el pensamiento occidental no es más que una serie de comentarios a pie de página de los diálogos de Platón. La República, es el texto platónico más sistemático, fruto de largos años de trabajo, que presenta tres líneas principales de argumentación (ético-política, metafísica y estético-mística) combinadas en un todo;

Book Synopsis Plato and His Contemporaries (RLE: Plato) by : G C Field
Download or read book Plato and His Contemporaries (RLE: Plato) written by G C Field and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book helps understand Plato’s writings by describing the circumstances in which they were produced. The author begins with an account of Plato’s life and development and a brief analysis of some of the more difficult points arising from the criticism of Plato’s writings. The remainder of the work considers the total setting – political, literary and philosophical – in which Plato’s writings were produced. There are extensive appendices on the Platonic Epistles, Aristotle and the Theory of Ideas, and on the post-Aristotelian tradition. The result is both a lucid account of Plato himself and a comprehensive view of culture in fifth century Greece.
Book Synopsis Apología de Sócrates. Critón. Fedón by : Platón
Download or read book Apología de Sócrates. Critón. Fedón written by Platón and published by Ediciones AKAL. This book was released on 2005-03-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Genres in Dialogue by : Andrea Wilson Nightingale
Download or read book Genres in Dialogue written by Andrea Wilson Nightingale and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1995 book takes as its starting point Plato's incorporation of specific genres of poetry and rhetoric into his dialogues. The author argues that Plato's 'dialogues' with traditional genres are part and parcel of his effort to define 'philosophy'. Before Plato, 'philosophy' designated 'intellectual cultivation' in the broadest sense. When Plato appropriated the term for his own intellectual project, he created a new and specialised discipline. In order to define and legitimise 'philosophy', Plato had to match it against genres of discourse that had authority and currency in democratic Athens. By incorporating the text or discourse of another genre, Plato 'defines' his new brand of wisdom in opposition to traditional modes of thinking and speaking. By targeting individual genres of discourse Plato marks the boundaries of 'philosophy' as a discursive and as a social practice.

Download or read book Plato’s Styles and Characters written by Gabriele Cornelli and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significance of Plato’s literary style to the content of his ideas is perhaps one of the central problems in the study of Plato and Ancient Philosophy as a whole. As Samuel Scolnicov points out in this collection, many other philosophers have employed literary techniques to express their ideas, just as many literary authors have exemplified philosophical ideas in their narratives, but for no other philosopher does the mode of expression play such a vital role in their thought as it does for Plato. And yet, even after two thousand years there is still no consensus about why Plato expresses his ideas in this distinctive style. Selected from the first Latin American Area meeting of the International Plato Society (www.platosociety.org) in Brazil in 2012, the following collection of essays presents some of the most recent scholarship from around the world on the wide range of issues related to Plato’s dialogue form. The essays can be divided into three categories. The first addresses general questions concerning Plato’s literary style. The second concerns the relation of his style to other genres and traditions in Ancient Greece. And the third examines Plato’s characters and his purpose in using them.

Book Synopsis Modernism, Rubén Darío, and the Poetics of Despair by : Alberto Acereda
Download or read book Modernism, Rubén Darío, and the Poetics of Despair written by Alberto Acereda and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2004 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernism, Ruben Darío, and the Poetics of Despair presents a detailed study of a neglected facet of Ruben Darío, and in general, of Hispanic Modernism: metaphysical and existential dimensions as preludes to Modernity. Alberto Acereda and J. Rigoberto Guevara approach the life and death issues in Darío works with special emphasis on his poetry. The authors demonstrate how the Nicaraguan poet takes the first steps towards poetic modernity. The tragic component of Darío works are examined in the light of Nineteenth Century philosophy, especially the work of Arthur Schopenhauer. Various thematic proposals are also formulated for the study of the works of Ruben Darío.
Book Synopsis The People of Plato by : Debra Nails
Download or read book The People of Plato written by Debra Nails and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2002-11-15 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The People of Plato is the first study since 1823 devoted exclusively to the identification of, and relationships among, the individuals represented in the complete Platonic corpus. It provides details of their lives, and it enables one to consider the persons of Plato's works, and those of other Socratics, within a nexus of important political, social, and familial relationships. Debra Nails makes a broad spectrum of scholarship accessible to the non-specialist. She distinguishes what can be stated confidently from what remains controversial and--with full references to ancient and contemporary sources--advances our knowledge of the men and women of the Socratic milieu. Bringing the results of modern epigraphical and papyrological research to bear on long-standing questions, The People of Plato is a fascinating resource and valuable research tool for the field of ancient Greek philosophy and for literary, political, and historical studies more generally. In discrete sections, Nails discusses systems of Athenian affiliation, significant historical episodes that link lives and careers of the late fifth century, and their implications for the dramatic dates of the dialogues. The volume includes a rich array of maps, stemmata, and diagrams, plus a glossary, chronology, plan of the agora in 399 B.C.E., bibliography, and indices.
