Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this volume was first published, plastic theory was the most modern method of structural analysis, and it made possible the direct design of steel frames in a way not available with only elastic methods. It is now recognized that this theory is also fundamental to structural design in materials such as reinforced concrete and aluminium. This is the first volume of a two-volume work by Professors Baker and Heyman that expounds and illustrates the methods of plastic design. Volume 1 gives the elements of the theory and covers the needs of most undergraduates and designers. A special feature of this work is the large number of exercises (140 in all) with answers. Volume 2 deals with advanced topics of theoretical analysis and practical design. The examples and the methods presented herein are extremely valuable to the engineer. The quality of the writing makes Professors Baker and Heyman's book a pleasure to read. Lord Baker (Sir John Fleetwood Baker, 1901-1985) was Professor of Mechanical Sciences and Head of the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge from 1943 to 1968. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society. Baker's pioneering research led to the development of the plastic theory of design, originally used for steel frames but now recognized as being valid for many structural materials, such as aluminium and reinforced concrete. Additionally, Baker was responsible for many curriculum innovations at the university and was the author of The Steel Skeleton, a two-volume work. Jacques Heyman is the former Head of the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge and the author of ten books, including The Stone Skeleton, Elements of the Theory of Structures, Structural Analysis: A Historical Approach, Elements of Stress Analysis, and the two-volume set Plastic Design of Frames: Volume 1. Fundamentals with Lord Baker and Volume 2. Applications. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the Royal Academy of Engineering. He acted as a consulting engineer for a number of English cathedrals and as a member of the Architectural Advisory Panel for Westminster Abbey and of the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England, and he has served on many British standards committees. The Stone Skeleton won the Choice Outstanding Academic Books Award in 1996.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plastic analysis method has been used extensively by engineers for designing steel structures. Simpler structures can be analyzed using the basic virtual work formulation, but more complex frames are evaluated with specialist computer software. This new book sets out a method for carrying out plastic analysis of complex structures without the need for specialist tools. The book provides an introduction to the use of linear programming techniques for plastic analysis. This powerful and advanced method for plastic analysis is important in an automated computational environment, in particular for non-linear structural analysis.A detailed comparison between the design codes for the United States and Australia and the emerging European Eurocodes enables practising engineers to understand the issues involved in plastic design procedures and the limitations imposed by this design method. Covers latest research in plastic analysis and analytical tools Introduces new successive approximation method for calculating collapse loads Programming guide for using spreadsheet tools for plastic analysis

"Structural Plasticity - Limit, Shakedown and Dynamic Plastic Analyses of Structure" provides more general solutions of limit and shakedown analysis for structures by using a unified strength theory. A series of solutions of plates from circular, annular plates to rhombus plates and square plates, rotating discs and cylinders, pressure vessels are presented. These results encompass the Tresca-Mohr-Coulomb solution of structure as special cases. The unified solution, which cannot be obtained by using a single criterion, is suitable to more materials and structures. Maohong Yu is professor of Department of Civil Engineering at Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. He has authored 12 books including "Unified Strength Theory and Its Applications" and "Generalized Plasticity".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matrix Methods of Structural Analysis, 2nd Edition deals with the use of matrix methods as standard tools for solving most non-trivial problems of structural analysis. Emphasis is on skeletal structures and the use of a more general finite element approach. The methods covered have natural links with techniques for automatic redundant selection in elastic analysis. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins with an introduction to the concepts and notation of matrix algebra, along with the value of a systematic approach; structure as an assembly of elements; boundaries and nodes; linearity and superposition; and how analytical methods are built up. The discussion then turns to the variables which form the basis of much of structural analysis, as well as the most important relationships between them. Subsequent chapters focus on the elastic properties of single elements; the equilibrium or displacement method; the equilibrium equations of a complete structure; plastic analysis and design; transfer matrices; and the analysis of non-linear structures. The compatibility or force method is also described. The final chapter considers the limits imposed by the size and accuracy of the computer used in structural analysis and how they can be extended. This monograph will be of interest to structural engineers and students of engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matrix Methods of Structural Analysis presents how concepts and notations of matrix algebra can be applied to arriving at general systematic approach to structure analysis. The book describes the use of matrix notation in structural analysis as being theoretically both compact and precise, but also, quite general. The text also presents, from the practical point of view, matrix notation as providing a systematic approach to the analysis of structures related to computer programming. Matrix algebraic methods are useful in repeated calculations where manual work becomes tedious. The Gaus-Seidel method and linear programming are two methods to use in solving simultaneous equations. The book then describes the notation for loads and displacements, on sign conventions, stiffness and flexibility matrices, and equilibrium and compatibility conditions. The text discusses the formulation of the equilibrium method using connection matrices and an alternative method. The book evaluates the compatibility method as programmed in a computer; and it discusses the analysis of a pin-jointed truss and of a rigid-jointed truss. The book presents some problems when using computers for analyzing structures, such as decision strategy, accuracy, and checks conducted on handling large matrices. The text also analyzes structures that behave in a non-linear manner. The book is suitable for structural engineers, physicist, civil engineers, and students of architectural design.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a concise, historical review of the methods of structural analysis and design - from Galileo in the seventeenth century, to the present day. Through it, students in structural engineering and professional engineers will gain a deeper understanding of the theory behind the modern software packages they use daily in structural design. This book also offers the reader a lucid examination of the process of structural analysis and how it relates to modern design. The first three chapters cover questions about the strength of materials, and how to calculate local effects. An account is then given of the development of the equations of elastic flexure and buckling, followed by a separate chapter on masonry arches. Three chapters on the overall behaviour of elastic structures lead to a discussion of plastic behaviour, and a final chapter indicates that there are still problems needing solution.
