Book excerpt: The integrity evaluation of the corroded pipelines has long been, and continues to be, a concern for the industry. Besides with the advancing age of the pipeline infrastructure and the competitive marketplace, cost effective maintenance and rehabilitation is increasingly important. This paper considers essential theoretical or statistical concepts and data requirements for engineering structural assessment suitable for estimate the present and future integrity of corroded pipelines. For purpose of this study the DNV RP F101 code has been used to evaluate the pipeline condition by calculating the remaining allowable operating pressure. An important outcome is the good quality estimation of the longer-term probability of loss of pipeline integrity subjected to the longer-term corrosion behaviour.

Throughout their service lives, pipelines transporting hydrocarbons are exposed to demanding working conditions and aggressive media. In long-term service, material aging increases the risk of damage and failure, which can be accompanied by significant economic losses and severe environmental consequences. This book presents a selection of complementary contributions written by experts operating in the wider fields of pipeline integrity; taken together, they offer a comprehensive portrait of the latest developments in this technological area.

Book excerpt: This book on Pipeline Integrity Management Under Geohazard Conditions (PIMG), includes 42 peer-refereed papers prepared by key industry subject matter experts. The papers compile the results of extensive research as well as assemble pipeline operators' experiences in tackling geohazard challenges for both new and vintage pipelines. In addition to the experts' papers, the editors of the book prepared an introduction to each section that includes summary review of the different papers in the section. The papers are presented in 10 sections addressing all aspects of geohazard integrity management. The fi rst section highlights the geohazard impact on pipeline integrity. The next four sections focused on the geohazard demand and its management by addressing geohazard characterization, monitoring, management and mitigation. The following four sections focused on the strain capacity by addressing strain capacity predictions, management and monitoring. The last chapter tied both strain demand and capacity through structural reliability and risk assessment protocols. The information in this book is not only intended for use by pipeline designers and operators but it is expected to also be used by regulators and standards writing organizations. It is therefore, the intention of ASME to update this book on a regular basis as new data, case studies and advancement of the state of practice become available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The failure of pipelines, often caused by corrosion affects the environment and economy considerably. To prevent this, it is necessary to focus on the corrosion of the pipelines. Burst pressure is a key factor to assess the integrity of a pipeline. There are three ways to determine burst pressure, lab testing, evaluation criteria (based on deterministic approach), and the Finite Element Method (FEM). The results of burst pressure assessment using evaluation criteria are too conservative compared to the results of an actual pipe burst experiment and FEM (Alves J L, 2003). The objectives of this thesis are to analyze the changing trend of burst pressure of pipelines with different defect dimensions; to compare the FEM results with those of the evaluated criteria to indicate the conservative property; and to revise the DNV burst model and verify its validity with actual burst experiments. The revised DNV model predicts burst pressure more reliably that could result in better engineering design of pipelines.

This book brings a holistic view of ECA in a way that is accessible to both young engineers and experienced practitioners. The book presents a consolidated approach to ECA based on an understanding that has been developed in Subsea7 by internal R&D, adherence to codes and standards, and through advanced application of assessment strategies. Throughout the book, the authors bring their detailed practical experience and knowledge to all aspects of offshore pipeline ECA.

Book excerpt: This book provides the most up-to-date, advanced methods and tools for risk assessment of onshore pipelines. These methods and tools are based primarily on information collected from ILI measurements and additional information about the soil surrounding the pipeline. The book provides a better understanding how the defects grow and interact (repulsion or attraction) and their spatial variability. In addition, the authors contemplate new defects that evolve between inspections and how they could affect the pipeline's reliability. A real-world case is presented to reinforce the concepts presented in the book. The book is structured into three parts: i) an introduction to onshore pipelines and the problem of corrosion, ii) a framework that deals with uncertainty for integrity programs for corroded pipelines, and iii) the applications of the methods presented in the book. The book is ideal for researchers and field engineers in oil and gas transportation and graduate and undergraduate engineering students interested in pipeline reliability assessments, spatial variability, and risk-based inspections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water and wastewater infrastructure are a somewhat invisible, yet critical, part of modern life. Incredibly, many buried assets have been in service for 50-100 years and are still in good condition. Conversely, other systems fail well before their predicted design lives, causing property damage, injury, and even loss of life. In many cases, early detection could have prevented catastrophic failure, and understanding the state of underground infrastructure has become a key priority for many municipalities. Industry has responded with a number of new and innovative technologies for condition assessment, however, understanding these tools can be difficult, as many vendors treat their proprietary systems as trade secrets. Water and Wastewater Pipeline Assessment Technologies: Classification Systems, Sensors, and Results Interpretation provides a thorough guide to the technical workings of some of the most popular water and wastewater assessment technologies available, including CCTV crawlers, acoustic listening devices, laser sensors, 360 ̊ video cameras, pipe penetrating radar, and more. Features: Presents an overview of current technologies in CCTV inspection, including next generation video formats, high-definition resolution, and fisheye/sidescan technology. Provides helpful tips and tricks to cut through technical jargon and identify the technological specifications to compare between multiple vendors. Examines the pros and cons of competing technologies including laser and lidar, and provides an overview of unique approaches such as Pipe Penetrating Radar, Focused Electrode Leak Location, and more. Highlights the importance of coding standards, data management, and software tools that can be leveraged to create a successful asset management program. Water and Wastewater Pipeline Assessment Technologies: Classification Systems, Sensors, and Results Interpretation provides a mixture of theory and real-world, practical considerations ranging from deployment tips and data exchange formats to the technical limitations of different technologies. The book is a valuable resource for municipal employees, project engineers, and others involved in designing and implementing major inspection programs.
