To most mem bers of the general public they are seen as terrors of the deep, perfect aquatic predators, and the stars (or more acurately, the villains) of major Hollywood movie films and innumerable television nature programmes. Such an image belies the fact that the vast majority of elasmobranch species feed on invertebrates and that, for man, the threat from shark attack is infinitesimal compared with even being struck by lightning! Similarly, there can be few biologists who have not carried out the classic vertebrate dissection of the dogfish at some stage early in the formative years of their scientific education. Yet elasmobranch species make up only a small proportion, perhaps little more than I %, of all vertebrates, and there are probably nearly 50 times as many teleost species as there are elasmobranchs. It is also curious that, as subjects for modern research, elasmobranchs seem to be chosen sometimes for their unique physiological characteristics and at other times because they represent excellent model systems for the study of some general process. Equally, it is for both these, seemingly contradictory, reasons that this book was proposed.

In total, the editors of the series have produced a total of 47 books (several volumes have two books) that contain almost 500 chapters since the inaugural volume published in 1969. The content of the "Fish Physiology" volumes has evolved over time. The initial volumes were devoted to understanding the basic mechanisms and principles of fish physiology, with a focus on a few model species and some application to natural environmental conditions. Then, as the field better understood mechanisms, the approach was broadened to not only delve deeper into system physiology (e.g., chapters in early volumes were expanded to become books), but interspecific differences in physiology were explored, permitting a more evolutionary framework. Finally, as interspecific physiological mechanisms were further resolved, it became possible to discuss physiology in light of a changing world. Thus, physiology can now inform on conservation, sustainability and management, as exemplified with the most recent volumes. This anniversary issue celebrates the series by highlighting some of the very important early work in the field that was published in the Series. In particular, we wished to (re)introduce new researchers to this research that has stood the test of time and that shaped the field. Each re-published chapter is preceded by a short review written by experts in the field to provide an overview/introduction of each selected chapter, discuss what is particularly noteworthy or important in the particular chapter, and discuss why in their opinion this chapter has become a classic in its own right and how it has inspired the field of fish physiology today? Captive environments can impact farmed animals at different levels, especially fishes, considering their highly complex sensory world. Understanding the ethology of a species is therefore essential to address fish welfare, and the interpretation of behavioral responses in specific rearing contexts (aquaculture or experimental contexts) demands knowledge of their underlying physiological, developmental, functional, and evolutionary mechanisms. In natural environments, the stress response has evolved to help animals survive challenging conditions. However, animals are adapted to deal with natural stressors, while anthropogenic stimuli may represent stressors that fishes are unable to cope with. Under such circumstances, stress responses may be maladaptive and cause severe damage to the animal. As welfare in captivity is affected in multiple dimensions, multiple possible indicators can be used to assess the welfare state of individuals. In the past, research on welfare has been largely focusing on health indicators and predominantly based on physiological stress. Ethological indicators, however, also integrate the mental perspective of the individual and have been gradually assuming an important role in welfare research: behavioral responses to stressors are an early response to adverse conditions, easily observable, and demonstrative of emotional states. Many behavioral indicators can be used as non-invasive measurements of welfare in practical contexts such as aquaculture and experimentation. Presently, research in fish welfare is growing in importance and interest because of the growing economic importance of fish farming, the comparative biology opportunities that experimental fishes provide, and the increasing public sensitivity to welfare issues.
